I haven’t read the source material but this version has been doing a far more thorough job with backstory and development. So..I guess it’s following it well?

I think it's not about that. It's different in story and pacing. What they're trying to do that's unique to the original is exciting and interesting in its own way and I think different people will prefer one over the other for different reasons. if you're talking purely technical Stampede stands toe to toe with the original if not outpacing it, and if you're talking story I think that's pretty subjective cause they've both got their ups and down.

It’s an original story set in a reimagined version of the world with new versions of the characters. Isn’t trying to be a faithful adaptation of the manga.

It's a remaster. It has much of the originals ideas but written in a way that keeps the entire story in mind rather than just going along

I'm going to be the odd man out here and say it takes the series to a completely new level entirely. It's fantastic.

It is a reboot presenting an original story, albeit heavily inspired by the manga. If you've read Trigun and Trigun Maximum, then you will most likely notice how Trigun Stampede follows general main plot points from the manga, even if in terms of details (execution, character designs, etc.) it goes its own way.

I loved Trigun Maximum manga and I can say that Trigun Stampede anime is filled to the brim with the atmosphere known from the source material.

Both animes are worth of checking out. However, if you don't know which one to pick and you want to pick only one show, then you need to ask yourself a question: do ypu prefer more shounen-like anime (Trigun), or something more seinen-like (Trigun Maximum)?

It's not.
A Remaster is when we take a work and "polish" the audio-visual with technologies that didn't existed when the work was first released.
Here we are talking more about a Remake , basically a re-telling/imagining the story/universe.

It’s retelling. It’s not faithful to the manga whatsoever.

You've nailed how I feel about it. It feels tonally way more like the manga than the anime. The original anime was spun off very early in the manga, and they didn't have a ton to work with, which is why it's very light hearted and Vash is basically exclusively fixated on Rem. This Vash, like the manga Vash, feels much more grounded in the world.
