I don't know how they managed to do it, I'm not a huge shonen fan but I have seen enough to notice a pattern. Character has fight, gets beaten, trains, gets stronger can do more things, rinse and repeat until end credits. Somehow this show managed to do the opposite and have characters regress or remain completely static. Shinra and arthur have zero progression until their training arc in the last episode. Shinra is even depowered but it makes sense since his ability he gained at the end of season one is story ending if he could actually use it whenever he wanted.

Tamaki was almost painful to watch, I waited 50 episodes for her to have some sort of progression and again it happens at the very last episode when it doesn't even matter. She went through more than most characters and it didn't change her any way. She remained weak and useless for two entire seasons. At least the first season had her lucky lecher skill be useful in semi creative ways. It basically disappeared in the second season and the few times it was used it wasn't even funny or inventive. Even ignoring power gains she remained the same, the big thing she went through in season 1 with shinra didn't change how she interacted with him at all. It was completely forgotten and reset by the next episode and carried on into the second season.

Finally and by far the worst was Hinawa. He had a lot going for him, an interesting background and a strong and flexible set of powers. They gave him an amazing showcase of his abilities in the first season multiple times culminating with his 1 on 1 with Arrow. We see him able to manipulate all kinds of weaponry in creative ways and showcase using everything from pistols to shotguns and rifles to a devastating degree. So where does he go in season 2? Absolutely nowhere, he barely exists and every time we are reminded that he does he is weaker than an unpowered human. He never uses any weapon aside from a pistol that feels weaker than a bb gun and a couple of weak infernal zombies is enough to threaten his life. It was embarrassing seeing him go from a cool and confident character who dominated the battlefield with tactics and strength going to toe to toe with other strong characters to being a forgotten punching bag who barely takes on a low level shmuck 2 vs 1.

I don't know what the author was thinking but the second season was a huge letdown for the most part and the biggest issue was forgotten characters or characters forgetting their own abilities and generally being completely useless. I really hope the third season can turn things around.

I ain't reading all that but shinra in the 1st season is very much slower and weaker than season 2. His strenght peaked in the fight vs sho because he had such a good connection to the evangelist. Season 2 he has to face stronger and smarter enemies like the dude with the doctor mask that i forgot his name and charon which is a fucking tank. Yet he still manages to kill a 2 horn demon in less than a second with a minimal connection. I don't see where he was weaker. Arthur also seemed a lot stronger when he had the donkey attached to him. It's been a while since i seen it so i don't remember everything but i def think you're opinion is wrong.

You know, this is all valid criticism. Zero progression power-wise for main characters, zero progression character-wise for (some) side characters, what you're saying isn't wrong. I've always regarded Fire Force as a shonen that has great animation, great sound, and cool fights, but lacks when it comes to character progression and finer details. If I had to compare it to something like FMAB, the gaps are noticeable.

I feel the story focuses on world-building more than it does the characters at times, but this could be an anime-exclusive problem due to the adaptation leaving out smaller details from the original. I haven't read the manga, so I could also be completely wrong on that.

Either way, while most people will probably say, "Nobody's gonna read that whole essay you wrote bro", I actually do appreciate the comment. Brought up some good points, and made me think a bit. Keep it up.

Realistically characters can’t stay overpowered it’s boring to see them not struggle you know. A good story will challenge you.

Just think about who they’re up against and just how the greatest chaos may be unleashed onto the world. This fight is far from easy.

Hinewa (sorry if misspelled) is definetly inderrated. I like him a lot except when they try to make him a ditz to give him more personality.

Shinra is going through a lot and has faced discrimination his entire life.

Idc about Arthur

I prefer season 1. Season 2 was annoying at times especially because of that pink haired chick.

And I believe maki is struggling with the system cause she’s strong no doubt but because she is a woman she is automagically suppressed by higher powers and it’s just like how woman struggle in the real world. She is fighting for more and the men just won’t let her.

I love fire force. I don't see how characters are downgraded at all... maybe the 2nd season wasn't as dynamic as the 1st, nevertheless it still rocks

Damn this was a boring show. Absolutely nothing happened. Everyone is weak AF and get beating up all the time. Also I hate how they are trying to make the bad guys look good after they straight up murder people.
