Is Avatar an anime?

Reason I've been thinking about it is because I literally just started watching it today. Now i've heard a lot of people say that its not an anime but rather a cartoon, which i can understand because it was made by/or published by nickelodeon and also directed by Dave Filoni(or atleast one of the episodes) who did the Star Wars: The Clone wars and many other star wars shows. SO in that regard I can understand that it is called a cartoon and not anime, but there is a Japanese version(which obviously sounds good) but the dub sounds just as fantastic. It also has a very similar feel to anime, and probably closest to Naruto imo.

Love to hear your opinions on the matter

People can get a little iffy about anime and cartoons, both are pretty much interchangeable, just one is made in Japan and the other is made pretty much everywhere else, they're still related animations.
