Please remove it. No matter what way you look at this show, it is absolutely not a shojo.

I too was shocked and suprised by seeing that the Banana Fish demographic was labeled as shojo. But, the matter of the fact is that, in the author's point of view, you and all have to respect, value, cherish and admit the ideological concepts as well as the origin and dynamics of the story. I recommend that it is better not to remove shojo if you truly understand the story's view point of Akimi Yoshida san ( Creator of Banana Fish Manga Series ). Cheers bro!!!:)

It was published in a shoujo magazine, so it's shoujo.

Banana fish was serialized in the monthly manga magazine Bessatsu Shōjo Comic

And

Betsucomi (ベツコミ), formerly known as Bessatsu Shōjo Comic (別冊少女コミック), is a monthly Japanese shōjo manga magazine

So there's no reason to remove the shojo tag.

It was published in a shoujo magazine so it has a shoujo tag. There nothing more to it. Why do you wanna remove the tag? Wdym it's not shoujo?

MAL does not chose tags and decide to not hold authority over them.
Banana Fish for some reason was published in Shoujo magazine and was advertised as shoujo, so tag stays.
Similarly, Date a Live somehow has completely undeserved mecha tag.

Banana Fish is a genre breaking show for girls, so shoujo seems fine. Your logic is the same as saying Kaguya Sama shouldn't be in Shonen :/

it was published in a shojo magazine MAL can’t remove the tag. It’s also to me it feels very shojo. If it was a shonen it would feel very different. ex more character fights, less romance undertones from the 2 mcs.

Maybe I'm taking this too seriously, but Kaguya is Seinen lol

This is totally a shoujo. Shoujo isn’t all romance and fluff. It is literally just a demographic and gets labeled depending on what magazine they are published in. Just like how Skip and Loafer is a Seinen since it’s published under a Seinen magazine and Dangers of the Heart is a Shounen. Just because it has romance doesn’t make it a shoujo.

I am sure it would surprise you that X and Tokyo Babylon are also both Shoujo. Top Secret is a shoujo with gore.

Actually for anyone curious there is a shoujo magazine that publishes darker shoujo that focuses on mystery, supernatural, action, etc that’s called Mystery Bonita. Some notable series they published are Children Of The Whales, Kieli, and Musashi.

Then we got Josei magazine Comic Tatan which seems to specialize in psychological/ drama/ gore: etc with series like Brutal, Witch of Thistle Castle, Murder Purgatorium, Suicide Line, and Shadows of Kyoto.

There is a huge variety and it’s a shame that shoujo gets simplified as being just romance.
