Well, this was easily the strangest episode of the season so far. So many layers to delve into, and I look forward to seeing the dub of this episode when it comes out. A lot of the episode is exposition, and there is very little besides that. There is a nice exploration about conspiracy theories regarding archeology, which I don't want to get too much into, but it was interesting to see. The weird part though was the ending and what that meant for the entire episode. Jigen was right to leave it alone, and Fujiko eventually saw reason and did the same at the end, but there is still a lot to unpack. Like how much of the religious aspect of the end reveal was literal and how much was figurative. All I can say is that I will need to watch it again to come to better conclusions and that I could easily have seen this episode being adapted into one of the yearly specials for a longer runtime. It was quite a trip.

Next week we are back in London/Sherlock plotline for what will probably be a two episode finale of that arc.

The track list for the soundtrack of the second arc of this season has been revealed, and it seems that aside from the new ED, Bitter Rain by Sakura Fujiwara, there doesn't appear to be any other vocal songs, which is a shame.

this episode went from "well, that's the most low budget thing I've seen in lupin"
to
"WAIT WHAT"
the execution was amazing. who was the director this time?
somehow I feel fujiko only refused because she couldn't fit it through the door.

Yet another piece of art from the signature style of Mamoru Oshii (also known for directing Ghost in the Shell (1995). Together with episode 4 of this season (Hemingway references), Oshii had brought in a unique touch to the Lupin III merchandise.

Side note: Oshii had been invited to direct the 3rd movie eventually became "The Castle of Cagliostro", the debuting movie directed by Miyazaki. How would Oshii handle Lupin II merchandiseI? The answer eventually came more than 40 years later.

had a feeling it was him, because it was pointed out to me previously that the assassin bar episode was his work. my fav work by him was the 2nd patlabor movie btw.

This was a real wild episode. I thought it was much better done than the assassin convention in the other episode. I think the allegories went over my head. I would think Michael's boss would have no trouble retrieving a statue. But what do I know?

Wow, what an EXCELLENT episode!!!

BTW, I love when they show that Lupin and Fujiko aren't just single-minded thieves but cultured people too.

So the central storyline feels like Lupin III: Part 5, the rest of the episodes like Lupin III: Part II but this one here reminded me more of Lupin the Third: Mine Fujiko to Iu Onna.

This might be my favorite episode yet. Loved the overall tone of this episode throughout, and when we got to the reveal, it was just so well done. Oshii and the rest of the staff hit it out of the park with the storytelling.

Though I hope they tone down on the exposition in the future.

If this was directed by Mamoru Oshii, then it looks like he loosely adapted the angel fossil plot point from his canceled Lupin movie.

I'm very glad Mamoru Oshii finally got the chance to do his Lupin meets angel fossil conspiracy storyline. Unfortunately, it was in a shorter format and it turned out less weird than I expected given what he had planned for the cancelled movie and what he ended up with in Angel's Egg.

I swear this should've been a movie. Maybe they can do what they did with Cagliostro and Elusiveness of the Fog an rework an episode into a movie. The sequence where Fujiko hacks the surveillance and we get the crazy glitch sequence would look amazing with a cinematic budget, and I think Oshii is having issues with how his style doesn't really lend well to TV durations. Both this and episode 4 was exposition heavy which works great in film but really stifles the pacing of the episode.

Both his episodes would be crazy Lupin movies, but with digital compositing and coloring I feel like something would get lost in translation making it today vs when the original idea got pitched when anime used cel based. But who knows. One can only hope. I feel like Oshii still gots it but not within TV.

It was a strange episode filled with a lot of exposition that I was not prepared for and it almost put me to sleep. No doubt that this was a Lupin and Fujiko episode that could have been its own separate movie.

The fact that the events of this episode will probably never be mentioned again is really messing with me. They really just went there... and left it at that.
Next time: Were back to the Sherlock Holmes stuff, please try not to think about the deep existential terror of the previous episode...

I both love it, and hate it.

Well, I was thinking about this manga when watching this episode:
https://myanimelist.net/manga/22441/Seraphim__2-oku_6661-man_3336_no_Tsubasa

I'm not suprised to see that the director was Mamoru Oshii ^^

Mamoru Oshii actually did it, this is basically his Angel Fossil Lupin movie that got killed in the preproduction, though a tone downed version. Lmao, that mad man.

BTW, the info in this episode consider Archaeopteryx is actually wrong, there are over all 12 specimens discovered, the latest one was found in 2014.

Also, this felt like the first episode of the season that actually utilized the Britain setting.

Interesting take having read the other comments about how this could/should have been one of the feature length specials, was quite intriguing overall and did feel too condensed.

The only other thing that annoyed me quite a bit was the fact the English bits of the announcements made in the British Museum were in an American English accent rather than a British one! :D

Hope they turn this episode into a movie honestly. Hell they took a random pink jacket episode and made a movie out of it (Alcatraz Connection).

Was waiting for this fabled ep and it did not disappoint. I agree with many others here that it's too bad Oshii did not get to make this in to a full length feature, but you never know I guess.

Man, what a slow burn leading to an incredible payoff. Really good atmosphere and tone throughout the episode. The scene inside the mansion only had 3 or 4 shots, but still felt so unique. One of the best-looking episodes too.

This would be amazing in a full-feature length.

What a great, uncanny feeling, weird episode! Absolutely love it (except for the wrong fossil info :P ) and the sound design, especially during the reveal at the end, is so well done.

I actually went and paused the episode for a bit after Fujiko's conversation with "Mihael" because I started fantasizing about how a Lupin episode with angels would work because I got some archangel vibes during that scene. Never actually considered them actually rolling with that though, so the payoff was two times as good for me in the end. ^^

Not gonna lie that I had the dub of this in the background as I was doing other stuff, but Mikhail (or Micheal) gave me this weird vibe.

And then boom!

That ending hit me like a ton of bricks. I could have known better and prepared myself Lupin seemed more serious than normal for a one-off episode.

I didn't like the episode as it depended too much on the surprise ending. In fact, this episode was a perfect example of what is wrong with this season: too much exposition. Almost half of the episode was spent on one character explaining past events. It could have been straight out of a book, no need for any animation, and thus the potential of the medium was wasted. Just watching someone tell a story instead of seeing things actually happening.

It's a bit strange that the exposition overdose or infodumps are so common this season with different directors and scriptwriters.

I was pretty bored during the first half, but I loved the second half. The editing of everything going on repeat after Fujiko hacked the cameras was wonderfully unsettling and something felt off about Lupin when he showed up. That frame of Lupin over Fujiko's shoulder was a little chilling. The ending went over my head, but I liked the attempt to create something psychological out of this episode. Lupin does not do that too often.

This episode's premise is a literal interpretation of a Kate Bush song.
"If I only could, I'd make a deal with God and get him to swap our places. I'd be running up that road, be running up that hill, be running up that building."

One of the weirdest Lupin episodes I've seen, but also one of the most memorable (in a good way). This one and the Hemmingway episode have been my highlights of the part so far.
