I see people faulting the anime because it features "mechas and magic" in medieval times ..

The story is still engaging with good action scenes and stellar animation

good mix of bloodiness, romance, and adventure

a good anime for mindless fun .. while it has some bushido codes of honor its not overly philosophical or slow paced

a decent 8/10 show .. I found it very enjoyable and a stylish anime to pass the time with

I thought it was decent also and agree with you totally about the undue hate part. I’d score it a little less but not much

No it deserves the hate, it was marketed as a historical samurai show and we got a mecha supernatural cluster fuck and yasuke wasn’t even the main character

While this anime don't really deserve that much of hate, it don't deserve much praise either in my opinion. Though there was some good moments in it, but everything was ruined because of that mecha and supernatural stuff in it which I think was not something what would be good in an actually decent historical samurai anime.

I view it as an anime of mindless fun , not sure what it was marketed as ,, but for what was given it still did a solid job in action and story

I mean sure the magic girl was overpowered .. but I didn't take the show that serious .. hence "mindless fun"

if you want a hardcore samurai show there aren't many out there , besides Shigurui .. if swords are clashing together at hyper-speed I'm not sure how or why you'd take the show more serious than its creators

I'm not sure whether you wrote this for me as reply or the other commenter or both, but I would like to clear that I wasn't looking for a hardcore samurai show in it. I watched it because I was interested in of how fun or cool will it be with this kind story. In the end I didn't liked it as much and I only wrote my opinion about it. Don't take it that seriously, please.

The plot wasn't engaging, the characters were forgettable and the integration of magical and sci fi elements is some of the worst I've ever seen. Shame really. Information on the real historical Yasuke is VERY sparse so it allows creative freedom but they dropped the ball hard.
At least the music was good. Very Vangelis-like which is good because Vangelis is awesome.

You've gotta be kidding me... You're saying you like the anime that ignores the badass protagonist in favor of an OP Mary Sue that miraculously defeats an ancient Legion of evil warriors in like the span of 6 episodes?
Listen if you wanna make the argument that it's mindless fun, I can get behind that. However, mindless fun shouldn't be any higher than a 7 that's my firm belief.
Long story short, it's a bad show that you happen to enjoy and that's fine. You won't be convincing anyone that it's good though.

It wasn’t so much that the Mechs themselves bothered me, it was that they were completely unnecessary, actively destroyed the world building, and were never really explained. Besides for that, the pacing was bad and they killed off the cool villain for a boring one. Music slaps though, and the animation is good.

The reason that the magic and mechas get so much hate is because they're so poorly integrated into the worldbuilding. The mechas do get an explanation as to why they're here, as Oda Nobunaga told us, they're there ever since the Mongolian invasions in 1274 and 1281. But if that's the case, where are they during Yasuke's backstory sequences? Also, the setting does not support the likelihood of having mechas around, as it's clearly sengoku era Japan (the Edo period began in 1603 and the story is set in 1602), making the inclusion of mechas feel forced and just there to make the action scenes fancier.

Don't get me wrong, you can have a samurai setting with mechas in it. Case in point: Samurai 7. but he reason it worked there is because it had a steampunk setting and the mechas also supported the themes in the show.

The main problem with the magic is that that magic system is very inconsistent. I don't think i need to say more if you compare Saki's powers to all other magic users' powers, it just serves to make Saki cooler to the cost of everyone else in the show, including Yasuke, who just becomes stupid in the final battle.

I know this was already said, but this also had to do with poor marketing. When marketing yourself and just Troyan horse in magic and mechas, you're upsetting your audience, especially when they're not integrated at all.

Also, I don't remember any romance to be in the show.

Nah this show was so ass. Unlikeable characters, stupid villains, and the history stuff you mentioned.

1/10, worst anime I’ve watched.

It was supposed to be a historical anime relating to the black samurai an actual person in history. They marketed it as that until we watched it and there were completely unnecessary Mechs and magic that ruined what could have been one of the best historical anime ever

I agree. It seems people really went into this hyped for an historical drama, which is understandable. But there are a lot of historical drama animes, and there is very little historically known about Yasuke anyway, so i really didn't mind them taking large liberties with the genre lol. I found this show fun to watch, loved the animation, and the music was really cool! Sometimes it's good to just have fun and enjoy the silly things. This was something unique that reminded me of the old cartoon network/ toonami days of anime. I'd probably rate it a 7/10. It's only 6 episodes and good to watch while working out! ๐Ÿ‘ Also I did watch the Japanese language version, I know its not the original but I really enjoyed Yaasan's VA.

Same.
I was a bit disappointed at first too that it's not a historical drama because it's based on a real black samurai at the core.

But tbh, I'm a simple person too.
Sometimes stuff is cool and I go "wooow, rule of cool." :o
