| I feel like a lot of jokes getting lost in translation but so far it's been a great read. Plus mangaka makes a lot of good points about comedy. Can't predict if it's going to be cancelled early on (its not ecchi harem, battle shonen nor sports, so of course a lot of people already skipping it), but I definitely want to read more. |

This is why I think people are rating this manga low: the jokes are not supposed to be “funny” as much as the manga in Bakuman are supposed to be engaging. They are props to tell the story. The character drama is the point. I don’t even think it’s right to call this a “comedy” manga |

Yes jokes are just a plot device to show characters' growth and journey. It could literally be anything else. No jokes can still be funny. Ideas from Bakuman are really, REALLY good (especially if you compare them to Platinum End lmao), so jokes can serve their purpose AND be entertaining. I don't mind jokes being flat sometimes, but people are too harsh on this manga. A lot of jokes from Gintama and Bakemonogatari are not that funny neither (to people outside of Japan) and need a lot of explanation "why exactly" they are funny. |
