Everything about this was great, especially the visuals and that Godly soundtrack. Since I don't know much about Japanese history, the historical aspect can be kind of overwhelming for me, but it's still great, just need to put in more attention to it. Loved the characters and character interactions so far though. Can't wait to when it officially airs.

Very very interesting. The animation style reminds me of Kaguya-hime and Mononoke (two of my favorite animes). Loved the narrative style as well, and plot looks promising.

Biwa is a character created for this anime, not shown in original classic story.
So this anime is enjoyable for the people who knew the end of the story .

She is the representation of the biwa-playing bards who passed down the the story over many generations. Or she is like the heroine in Robert Graves's novel Homer's Daughter, according to which Odyssey was written by a woman - if this story too followed the same path, Heike Monogatari would be written in it by a fictional woman who she will grow into in the next 15 years.

Meanwhile, just gotta say this might be a rare 10/10 material

That is what sets her apart from the rest. There's nothing cliché or mundane in her works and I personally found it amusing.

Amazing anime, absolutely loved it!

But I lost it at the very end. Who did that boy ("Sukamoto" or something, the one who dresses yellow and went on a hunting with the bird) offended? Some emperor who was not shown yet?
He offended that so called emperor just by running alongside his carriage?
And the war scenne that plays after that... What about that?

The boy's name is Shinsammi no Chujo Sukemori, he is the second son of Komatsu (Taira no Shigemori). He offended Matsudono Motofusa who was sessho, that is imperial regent at the time. The emperor whose regent he was is Takakura, who was an eight years old child at the time of the incident. He offended the regent by not dismounting his horse when the sessho and his retinue passed by - the protocol of the imperial court was very strict, the boy was of good family but low rank, because of his young age so he should have alighted. There wasn't a war scene, though warriors of Sukemori's grandfather rided out and humiliated the sessho's retainers by cutting off their front hair and top knot.

An amazing debut. The innovative art style and well-crafted atmosphere can hold attencion as history (positive point to the mystery of the eyes) progresses. Naoko Yamada knows what she does, and does very well. Extremely hyped, this has enourmous potencial.

This first episode was amazing, great way to start off the Fall anime season. I have really high hopes for this show, when I saw it being animated by the same studio that did Eizouken I knew I'd end up loving it. Really excited for the rest, everything about this episode was flawless.

Okay, that certainly was an interesting first episode!

Science SARU’s animation style plus Naoka Yamada-kantoku’s direction and Kensuke Ushio’s tracks, I’ve been waiting for this for a while you see.

Biwa’s father getting killed like that surprised me a little, I was expecting an inexplicable power or something of the sort there.

Feels like the story is being told from a disjointed POV but I’m looking forward to more nonetheless.

Pretty nice Op and a unique ED, btw.

Damn look at the unique visual from Science SARU.
And we have Yuuki Aoi and Sakurai Takahiro, I'm already like the seiyuu list.

They opened it with Biwa Father got killed. Damn that was fcked up.

So she can see the future with her blue eye.

Solid First Episode, definitely intrigued.
I rarely watched Historical Anime, i feel like i can learned some History here.

Heike is the other name of the Taira clan whose head was Taira no Kiyomori, and his son is Taira no Shigemori, the man who has heterochromia in the anime. The emperor at this time is the child Takakura, though the anime showed in the last scene the retired emperor Go-Shirakawa as well - he will have an important role in the unfolding story. The singing parts are citations from the original Heike Monogatari.

At that time, blind people like Biwa's father often made a living by storytelling on streets with stringed instrument called biwa. It's like bard. Biwa is name of main character , and also name of stringed instrument she played.
Last part of epsode 1, Biwa actually played the HeikeMonogatari's script with biwa .

I am a fan of Kesuke work, he has his style which is very distinct and magical. His recent work in Cider no you ni made that movie infinity times better and he is also doing Chainsawman , absolute legend.
I have watched this episode 3 times, first i was confused about the ending part but people here in the discussion section has made it clear. Good stuff after long.
It really breaks my heart that this anime hasn't picked up the crowd yet, not even visible in winter playlist at homepage. Though can't argue much on that, had the PV shown some months prior it would have gain attention. Only hope some so called big anitubers to showcase this one on their channel instead of liking doujinshi and henti on twitter.

And thanks @Ishitateso for clarification.

This looks like a real serious piece of work. If they can keep up this quality it'll be an all-time classic.

The one thing I wasn't keen on, and I see I'm not the only one, was the modern pop cues in the music, but you can't have it all.

The animation is just breathtaking, just the way the wind blows thru the flowers and hair makes me feel like I can feel the wind. The opening seen was poignant and powerful, really sets the tone of the brutality of life during that time period. I'm really in love with the sound design so far and the OP/ED. Science Saru is easily becoming one of my favorite studios!

"In the past few months since we met, I've shared many memories with Nagato. Though I've also shared memories with Haruhi, Asahina-san and Koizumi, I found that I've experienced more events with Nagato in particular. In fact, every situation seems to involve her. I might as well mention this, she's probably the only person to cause the bell within me to shake the most vigorously..." ~ Kyon, TMOSH

This is beautiful.

The animation is similar to Sonny Boy (also Biwa has the same VA as Mizuho) so it makes me really happy that there's another anime that has the similar aesthetic feels so it'll help me to not miss Sonny Boy that much. And I really love traditional Japanese music, I'm definitely gonna enjoy this.

The OP is beautiful and they gave rap for the ED that's quite unexpected for an anime like this but it went so well with this anime.

The way it begun was so heartbreaking yet so beautiful.

This Heike leaders are so cruel. It's a good thing that Shigemori is of different views than his father. So, with the help of Biwa there's hope that Shigemori will be able to bring change in this Kingdom.
