And it's not like this becomes super dramatic - ever. Just the characters being themselves in a way that feels sensible for who they've been established. I DO have empathy with the characters, which is why I don't feel like laughing at their suffering the way the show wants me to. If I didn't give a shit about them, then this series would be fine. But the series treats the characters and their problems seriously, like I'm supposed to care about them, and when I do, it makes me despise the pain that they keep getting put in for the sake of "comedy".

There is no method of "making it work" that I will find believable. Or at least not believable in a way that I find acceptable. Browbeating someone into accepting a situation that they don't like, for example, is totally believable. I will just despise the series for doing it.
