So I rate this anime a 7/10

If the female MC had fallen in love with crow man. if crow man and the MC's mother had a romantic/sexual relationship. If Hana and Asahi had died, if any two or three of these had taken place in the anime. I could have given it as high as an 8, or even 9/10.

As it was airing, I thought it was intriguing yet boring at times. Well, not to much boring… more so CONFUSING. I had no idea what was going on. There came a point where I questioned what the plot was. I dropped it after episode 10. However, I have just now finished the series and I think it is so much better than I expected. It is so good! If you’re watching it and binge it then you’ll definitely love it. It has the badass fl who craves revenge that everyone wants in a show. It also has unexpected plot twists. Although some were predictable, there were two plot twists that stuck out to me while watching. Both I DEFINITELY DID NOT EXPECT. I absolutely loved the series because of those factors. Not to mention the ending was exactly how I wanted it to be. Idk.. although it was rough at first the conclusion really tied everything together and when you rewatch it, you understand things a bit better. So please gives this series a try. It’s worth it :)

I may be living in that same parallel universe as you because I absolutely loved this anime too. Most of the reasons people are saying they hate it I just can't agree with.

I gave it a 9/10 but very close to a 10.

Glad to see I'm not the only one ;) AS a matter of fact, I've just finished rewatching it and it was even better the second time around. So many details I had missed the first time...

Kudos to you for appreciating something different.

Well I am still baffled why so many people hate it. Maybe because it is more like traditional japanese drama/jidaigeki instead of anime-like but still it wasnt that complicated. The amount of people asking stupid questions in the last episode`s discussion(why didnt they show Sawa bleedng? or "Jin killed tokugawa but he was already dying lol, he achieved nothing) made me think that most of the viewers have attention span of a gnat. Like seriously, there were some problems with the plot and not everything was resolved in the end but come on, it is not rocket science.

I see many complaints about characters and I cannot comprehend what is wrong with them. "Sawa is directionless and she was sad whole episode" yeah, she should scream "nakama power senpai" and solo whole Japan... Calling characters from this show one-dimensional or flat is even more confusing. They are not at the level of Kurosawa`s, Kubrick`s or Tarkovsky`s but holly heck. Compared to most anime characters they are very well fleshed out and decent(ok Makoto was still the messy one). I mean we have infinite amount of cute anime girl being cute, isekai guy who wants to save the world, young and reckless hero-type and tsunderes. Those archetypes are so common and samey that it nauseating. On top of that there are animes like Goblin Slayer with such great characters as "goblin slayer" that loves to slays goblin and big titty girl that likes him. Nothing more to add. Compared to those animes, the characters form Joran are at least decent.

I had wonderful time with this anime maybe because I absolutely adore settings like this and I have an undying love for jidaigeki and traditional Japanese cinema. It was not as depressive and despair-ridden as most of Mizoguchi/Kobayashi Masaki movies but it certainly gave me a much expected cathartic feeling. And episode 10 broke me down. You have to be heartless not to feel anything after watching it. Such a well written flashback.

Well it seems that Joran flopped as anime because "giff me more isekai or shounen" or maybe not enough big titty woman showing skin/moe stuff but it seems Japanese folk has taken liking to it - it is going to get a scene play in the future so respect for them once more. Too bad the most of the greatest Japanese directors are dead, they could have made great movie out of it. But who knows, maybe there will be some mad lad to do it.

At the end of the day even if somebody did not like the story/characters there were beauftiful visuals, unique artstyle and mesmerizing audio to accompany it. Giving something unique a 1/10 sounds really retarded and is a sign of how lowest common denominator the anime has become in the last years.

So once again respect to you for your opinion. I gave it a 8, so it is pretty high on my list. There were some problems I had with the plot twists and Makoto wasnt written as good as (s)he could be") but at the end of the day it was one of the most memorable anime-related things I have watched lately.
