Oh, my poor Christian heart.

This chapter truly shows us that Miyazawa respected and was even influenced by the Western culture and Christianity.

His appreciation of Dvorak's From the New World Symphony. His understanding of the core value of Christianity too. He did not write this story to turn people into Christians. In fact, he wanted to show his own belief/faith. Therefore I truly appreciate his portrayal of the Christian faith and ethics through the Titanic passengers and the Titanic scene.

I don't know what makes us truly happy. Even when something really tragic happens, if that happens in order to lead us toward the right things then every step, whether uphill or downhill, brings us one step closer to true happiness.

Such beautiful words from such a beautiful scene. I truly believe that in that scene lies the "answer" to true happiness.

I can't say that I'm a Christian, let alone a devout Christian. Most Christians most likely would categorize me as a non-believer. But, there's still something Christian in me.

There's something that keeps driving me towards that Christian standard of goodness, kindness, gentleness, compassion and sacrifice (Miyazawa certainly was touched by the concept of sacrifice in the Christian faith).

Nearer My God to Thee reminds me of my grandfather's funeral. Ah, I really was raised as a Christian. There's something about hymns that just kept me away from bad thoughts.

All this reminds me of these words from Robert Bresson's Diary of a Country Priest:

Sigh.. The train towards Salvation..

"What is your God like?"

"I'm not quite sure, but.. He is the only one, the true God."

"Of course, there is only one true God."

"No, you didn't get it. He is the only true, real.."

"Of course, that's what I meant... I pray that you two shall find your way to God"

Then we got to witness the bright Christian heaven with the shining Christian cross.

Miyazawa certainly didn't sugarcoat the Buddhist's heaven (Nirvana). He pictured it as an Abyss, complete darkness.

I truly appreciate his honesty with his own rejection of the Christian heaven and Nirvana.

Again, sigh...

You may doubt me but there was a time when I was always praying before and after I sleep. I, too, prayed for everyone's happiness. Bless everybody wherever they are..

I still pray sometimes.. Mostly during my morning and afternoon/evening commute, i.e. when I'm driving to the office and when I'm driving back home from the office.. I don't know why but during those commuting moments, I sometimes think about everything.
