The world is in another dimension. Any resemblance to the real world is just a coincidence. No need to think deeper.

Damn, shit went down. I really wonder if they all got turned into legion at the end there. That long range legion was scary, could it be that we might get a POV from that side on how the AIs overthrew them? Just thinking that because of the "I'll protect the princess!!!" bit. Seemed important.
You might want to read the 3 latest volume of the novel ;)

Concerning the whole princess ordeal and the voice of the ultra long range artillery legion unit, it’s just foreshadowing for the next cour. Just in case you’re confused. Sorry if this was a rhetorical question lol.
From what anime is your banner? That white haired girl hugging a doll

Pretty sure shin said books they can't read are deemed useless, and this is coming from the guy who was shown reading books multiple times. They probably couldn't understand it anyways.

So the first season of 86 is over... Not gonna lie, the premise was interesting but I just couldn't get with it mostly cause I didn't get invested in the characters. There were some times here and there that I enjoyed but it wasn't a show that I was particularly excited to watch every week.
I'm still not sure if I'll come back for the second season.

Big words = smarter person with the only true opinion that matters

Those are big words to you?

I just listed the common ground between 86, The Hunger Games, Divergent, The Maze Runner, you know, drawing a comparisons checklist between its peers in its genre/style.

I mean yeah you listed common themes and settings. Your critique is also surface level too dude lol. Let's not pretend you or anyone here is an actual literary critic nor that anime in general it's mostly content aimed at YA audience. I think it would be hard to be a fan of anime/manga and not enjoy YA media. Honestly it was a pretty good one at that though main reason I am watching something like this and not Hunger Games even if the base appeal is the same. Japan knows how to do this stuff well.

To get to my final thoughts overall it was a pretty good mecha war drama sad how rare those are today. I think what I do appreciate how even small scenes I think do a good job at getting you to care for some of the characters more so than the dramatic stuff. I really do like the directing and how it's cut together. I still don 't know about the world itself lots of mystery hopefully we see more world building next season. Still a few things I kinda want cleared up.

Story wasn't anything special IMO. A dystopian drama that's main cast is a bunch of kids. I've seen it all before. What was good though was the directing and the soundtrack, absolutely brilliant. 7/10 overall.

Overall, it's good. My only complaint is that character death and fight scenes were always done off-screen. But I still enjoyed it nonetheless.

Was being a rather standard season finale until that last sequence with Shinei and his brother. Not gonna lie, that addition was actually pretty damn good. "Emotional" even... if I cared enough about their family drama. That is.

Quite average first part overall. Gave this anime a chance only because of Sawano's OST and that's it. Premise was interesting but its approach from a political-social perspective was rather superficial and the more sci-fi the plot became, the less said perspective was explored. Direction during some episodes was quite stellar tho. Probably the only aspect I found remarkable enough alongside the OST.

And regarding cast, I honestly couldn't care less about this bunch of characters. Most of them were rather shallow and even unbearable in some cases. Lena and Shinei's characters could be counted as exceptions but if I'm being honest, if they were to die tomorrow, I wouldn't bat an eye.

5/10 - Anyways, hoping for things to get more engaging in the second cour/season.

They can't read the books because the books are in Japanese. My question is why not? They must be in Japan since there's an old Japanese school there, but every time there is text in this show it's in English-except for this school.

Very engaging opening sequence to wrap back to what we saw last episode.

I love seeing the 86 cast interact and just having the most fun they can on their path to death, its very heartwarming to watch them see the best in things (like the school grounds). I also love how Shin "nobely" leaves his friends behind and fights the Legion so they can live a bit longer and how they refuse this and help him.

I also love how they showed Lena's visit to the grounds and how the 86 knew that she would come. Let's go Lena!!

Can't wait for the second cour!!

The cat seems like a nice parallel to Lena, Lena despite being an alba, is sympathetic to the 86, so the cat being a mixture of white and black denotes this. The cat is left behind in the base just like Lena, it's not even given a name just like how the 86 don't address Lena with just her name but with her rank as well, like they don't consider anyone who doesn't fight beside them their comrades. Also the cat playing with the pig toy could parallel the relationship between Lena and 86 but that seems like a stretch as well.

Also I have to say, I had a similar expression as Lena while hearing the comments Shin and co left behind for Lena. All over it was a very fun and interesting series for me.

You kinda answered yourself indirectly, but they are in former giadian territory for this setting. For someone like shin he wouldn't understand what it meant, and the rest may not have even learned to read anything

Rewatch ep 10 again ,it was shown they have reached neighbour country "Empire of Giad"( where Legions came from) .Shin's parents are also natives of Giad so Shin may or may not know the language. Most of the 86's didn't have the basic education so its not surprising they don't know foreign language.

this was okay..not as good as i thought when i first heard about it ,so much of the political world structure i thought would be explored hardly happened like outside of Lena's uncle we never saw any officials talking about anything but that's more on the issue of this whole season just being one vol when normally these LNs are too fast paced this one seemed so much focused was on a story that you really didn't need to drag it out the whole first cour.

directing and music and overall production was a extreme hard carry for a not very well written story some of the best parts were anime originals that improved what i assume wasn't in the books lol

as for that ending it was well either they all die and keep the trend going or by some crazy asspull luck they make it out and uh if you somehow have kept your eyes shut while commenting you wouldn't had seen the LN covers that are either the biggest jaibaits are just spoilers

6/10 will see the 2nd part and see if it fixes some of the problems i had with all the worldbuilding and characters or it just gets worse

As opposed to a good war drama, I guess. Gods, yeah, good war dramas are pretty rare. I should have kept my HBO Go subscription. There was that Israeli war drama about the Yom Kippur war iirc.

This episode made me cry- I enjoyed season one a lot. I didn't read the novel but from what I've heard they did a pretty good job with the anime.
I'm happy that Lena finally made the step and had a look at where the others have lived and I mean she's a mother now! (Of a kitten but who cares at this point)

I am very looking forward to season two and the special!!

Finally it's over... and yeah it's alright I guess. Actually no if I'm being honest, I found it very boring throughout. It's not bad, like I can't really criticize it, but I just found it kind of lame. I just kept watching because I wanted to give it a chance to help make me like it eventually, maybe. But really I was wanting to drop it by the 3rd episode or so. Man on paper this should've been a home run of an anime. But it didn't end up being my cup of tea at all.... which is a shame.

If you are one of those who are intrigued by 86, as it seems that most of the viewers are, then that's great. You got to enjoy something that I couldn't. I wish I could have gotten as invested as the rest of you, but I just didn't care at all for the characters. Maybe the plot is a little interesting, but I really can't say much else.

I was slightly captivated by this last episode, however, and still intend to watch the second cour. But as for this one, I really didn't dig it that much. 3/10

There's a lot of reasons to bear deep hatred towards an anime, such as taste difference, failed expectation (this one most unlikely), their fav anime being overshadowed, mainstream hate, trolls etc. I was that disgusting kid once, so I know.

I prefer liking what I like and discuss it with people who also like it. Too bad LN section doesn't have much discussion on the forum.
Current favourite ships:
- Chika x Satowa (Kono Oto Tomare)
- Shin x Lena (86)
- Vanitas x Jeanne (Vanitas no Carte)

Fair enough- Although, I guess I don't understand the point of going into the forums to discuss something you didn't like either. A review is one thing, but, I guess making posts repeatedly throughout the length of the show bashing on it, doesn't make much sense to me if it wasn't enjoyable for you in the first place.

Maybe I'm just different, but, if I found something bad, I would leave it in the past, and not give it much of a second thought.

I guess at the end of the day- different strokes for different folks, but, I couldn't imagine sitting down and watching through an entire series of something I hated THAT MUCH.

To be honest, I wasn't a big fan and can't really get into it when the series started. Lots of positive reviews and hype back then but I was always not impress somehow. The feeling isn't just there but it started to grow more and more onto me. The last 2 episodes execution is off the chart by the way. SEASON 2 please!

I thought they were gonna leave us on that cliffhanger last ep and follow Lena around, but nah this one is way worse? Are the 4 of them really all dead and Shin is now the newest member of the legion? Idk team... the upcoming novel covers make me pretty fuckin skeptical of that. Maybe the 4 are dead which would be pretty sad, but if the ending really is as it implies then they gonna be sowing his head back on somehow.

The show is alright I guess. Definitely not a masterpiece.

The animation is competent, but the CGI could definitely use more work and is more egregious due to the fact all the CGI creatures have legs which should show weight while they move, which they don't.

The soundtrack was good though, can't fault the OST but the other sound design was pretty cookie-cutter and generic.

The story works on the most simplest level, and any themes it tries to convey are also surface level at best. I wish we got to learn more about the people of the Republic, or more info about the Legion or the cultures of the 86. Instead all we got was a group of teenagers who fought robots.

The characters were ok as well. Some of them had interesting conflicts but the rest didn't really seem to have too much of a purpose. I've already forgotten their names but the shorter blonde haired guy was the most interesting.

Overall, 7/10. Not bad, but there are certainly much better anime this season.

I am speechless, Eight Six was phenomenal from beginning to end. It was so good that I gave in and started reading the light novel albeit I am slow as fuck, only in the 2nd volume, no regrets though. And I can definitely say that this is one of the best if not the best light novel adaptation in existence. Can't fucking wait for the second cour.

Lena visiting the spearhead squadron's base was so nice and that ending scene was beautifully cruel. I wonder what they have in store for us for the special episode next week, I kind of want to see the volume 1 epilogue.

Never has a show made me so immersed in it and made me feel all kinds of emotions for every single episode, 10/10.

Unfortunately the western anime community is full of freshmen english literature degree students that practice their critical reviewing on anime adaptations that barely cover 10% of the entire story of all things. I don't see the same level of intellectual masturbation in the Japanese sphere seeing as people know what to expect from a medium for teens. Seen comments in japanese thats "don't get the appeal" and what not but nothing as flowery as i see here.

If you want to test whether a person has critical thinking and the ability to build simple chains of logic, then show him this anime.
If he says he liked it, congratulations, you already know the answer.

If my words seem rude or provocative to you, just try taking one sip of beer every time you see some plot inconsistency or hole in this show.
By the middle of the eighth mug, you'll probably know what I mean.

This anime has great graphics, music and everything else that isn't about the plot. But as soon as you start thinking about the plot, all that beautiful visuals fall apart.

The last episode should have brought a tear to my eye, but all it did was make me laugh. A silly reference to World War I in the form of a book that shouldn't be in this world. The frontier of the empire is three days' leisurely drive away. The inadequate behavior of the Legion, which can't destroy the squad of five-man infiltrators it has already discovered. Bringing super long-range artillery into close proximity.

If you think about it seriously, don't you think people could have lost to this Skynet on Chinese firmware only if they had fought him with water balloons and water cannons.

And my favorite. The rifles and pistols they were given, even though the only targets they can use them against are the Albas. The rifles and pistols they were given, even though the only targets they can use them against are the Albians. Those robots that were let in for one episode don't count, as this was obviously done to make the death of the rest of the squad look less weird and silly.

5/10 Out of sheer respect for the opening and animation of the juggernauts.

ah,you are that pudding guy ,right? nice to meet you again after weeks.glad that you sticked around till last episode.

Hello to you, too. Yes, I stayed to watch the show to be sure of my point of view. Without looking back at the various reservations in future episodes.

And I'm glad that all the explanations of the novella readers from the pudding discussion were not shown in any way in the first season of the anime, thus turning it into a complete farce.

This allows my point of view to remain as true even after seven new episodes.

As if there is anything much better or "deeper" this season, that would have effected his opinion. Asides from the fact its basically shoujo mecha later. Amazing one at that tbh, but not some pseudo intellectual mastubation "high" literature some people here apparently look for in weeb media of all fucking things.

i guess MAL is good for a laugh thanks to you guys that watch through poorly done subs but come out with these self wank "critical" reviews about cartoons for teens-young adults..

Based take ngl. Of course there are masterpieces in anime just like any other medium, but for every masterpiece is like a hundred isekai power fantasies. But here’s the thing: THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT. If a show is enjoyable, it doesn’t have to be deep. In fact, some masterpieces with deep themes are less enjoyable then the less deep anime (Punpun and Evangelion come to mind for me) because of the dark themes they tackle. This show is far from basic and the fact it covers some political and societal themes properly and is (personally) enjoyable sets it apart from not just a lot of anime, but TV in general.

I'm sure these people are just kids/ literature normies, I used to be like that in my earlier weeb years, being a shinsekai yori elitist for anime and a subahibi/scaji circlejerker with eroge but as a i grew older I came to realize that there is more to enjoyable media than deep meanings and focused exploration of themes.

Anime is mainly escapism, it will not always make sense or strive to give you life changing messages, sometimes a shallow exploration of themes is fine with a focus on nice character interactions, OP superhero fantasy stuff in shounen or idealistic cute diabetes inducing romance. Hell at least for me with work and shit taking all my time I find these more enjoyable now whilst avoiding darker stuff like a shinsekai yori.

86 is basically a shin x lena shoujo mecha mainly while the war stuff is merely a setting to add flavor to the romance, at least thats how I see it and what i look forward to through the 9 volumes I read of it. The writer doesn't even hide that this is a big part of the story she wrote. The other being about how the characters grow in the world and within their past and current circumstances. Even more of a reason why i laugh at hypercritical reviews by misguided amateur cartoon critics. P

People like goddee or whatever are fine though, since he has points about the setting and just wants to discuss them while actively actually articulating his points properly rather than vaguely throwing around buzzwords learned in HS literature class. I also like military shit so i get his criticism on the war fighting aspect even if i sperged out on him initially.

They're not issued guns. Those are scavenged from ruins. In fact they're not supposed to have them at all but their Alba handlers have a DGAF attitude to the whole war and don't care as long as the 86 are doing their "job" (dying to the Legion).

Granted it's not as explicitly spelled out in the anime but the LN makes it pretty clear that the guns are contraband.

If someone would give me five dollars every time I hear from defenders of this anime that it was different in the novella and everything was explained there. I'd be able to buy all the volumes that came out and not have to listen to this nonsense anymore.

The excuse that things were different in the novella's plot is one of the worst possible.

Then what do you think is a better anime this season? Please enlighten me.

Vivy, Odd Taxi and Nomad are much better than 86.

Vivy after the last few eps is definitely not better than 86 dude. Hell none of those are that much worse or better. At least not to a degree that can describe them as "much better", especially after taking into account subjective taste.

Great, they had to end this on an cliffhanger HUH. Gotta wait just to see that Shin really died or not in my opinion he is not dead. Really good 1st cour or 1st season idk. Best directed anime this season and a great adaptation overall. 8/10

I'm sure you'll overcome this.

It's something I've noticed with critics of this show. There are regular complaints saying something wasn't shown or depicted in the anime, yet if you actually pay attention it's in there.

EDIT: Also, the rifles and pistols aren't there just to be used against Alba. It's been depicted several times in the anime that they use them to either kill themselves or kill their comrades so that they can't be turned into Legion. There's also a shown but not told section early on in the anime where they hunted a boar, presumably with a rifle.

I have to agree with you about Vivy. I preferred Vivy up until episode six, but It never recaptured the same highs aas that episode. It's still a fantastic show though. 86 however kept on one-upping itself. It started off weaker but ended way stronger.

Yeah to be fair it's a bit exhausting to explain every little detail people miss in this anime. But it's kinda funny when they usually build a whole essay complaining about the anime not saying/portraying this, this and this. Then I just post a screenshot about it, that look, in ep X it was said/shown exactly what you meant. Then they start moving the goalpost, and after a few messages the goalpost is like already in the next town's stadium.

How many times is this now that a negative poster has just clearly demonstrated they weren't paying any attention to the show at all !?

What is even the point in debating with these people, it's like they got their comprehension tests back with an F grade and blamed the test.

To be fair more times than I can count.
Point is that maybe 3rd parties, future watchers, who read all this or might read it in the future can see that most of what they say is just factually not true or based on stuff that's not true.
