i guess the reason they did not made autonomous killer drones is because the killer robots might kill them too eh so they instead resort to using racism and make none whites become cannon fodders

lol this might become a controversial anime since White Guilt is strong

The first part looks like they were dealing with a shortage spare parts supplies from the repair section of 86, that needed to use a former machine as the substitute. I hope its not become the big problem later on. Okay, in short another mecha fight, another nice introduction to the characterization aspect. The Legion drone names also got introduced. Undertaker seems pretty skillful and its really dedicated to his own pride name, the Undertaker. Even he could shut down the Handler one advice almost in an instant. Good thing Lena still had the motivation to keep goin on as the Handler of them. The classroom scene as the dump info exposition alternative looked a bit out of place. But certainly give a useful slot to filled the gap. Also, the Lena uniform button part where Lena talked about their connection also interesting. Its may hint something until Lena come in to scold the Undertaker directly around the unit. Yes its sounds a pretty good connection, right? I wonder if the certain changes of her room also related to her mentality while handling them. Its pretty interesting too.

In the end, the balance between the mecha fight part and the story telling lines seems alright enough to keep me motivate continuing these series. Nice job!

Loved this episode the fight was really well done,Undertaker is a really unique soldier with outstanding capabilities.

I was kinda bummed when the teacher was talking about their history I wonder if those Legions have human pilots if not why the don't build new ones instead.

Wait let me see if I got this, and correct me if I'm wrong

There was a conflict between two races. One had powerful weapons that gave them an advantage before the other side obtained the same or weapons of equal power, then one of the factions were gathered into a single region and forced to remain there? A race was deemed as "not human", and are persecuted for that? AND the enemy government rewrote their history to make their persecution justified?

So like, is this one of those "change it slightly so it's not obvious you copied" type of anime?

Kinda hoping the unavoidable real life comparisons to historical events like WWII will be handled properly in this story. I hope the systemic racism and prejudice against the 86 will be thorougly explored. Lena is naive and can't put herself in the shoes of the 86, but she wants to get to know them and be friendly with them. It's very normal that the 86 is not interested in doing that and are distrustful, seeing how the whole republic treats them.

After 2 episodes the 86 show promises to be an interesting ride. Too bad about the few number of episodes though.

The setting of the world is still full of questions at this point, it's good when everything is told bit by bit, only the curiosity is a lot higher that way.

It is a bit odd to strip human rights from the people with a different haircolor
As frontline fighters 86 should have better equipment. Even when The Republic of San Magnolia can't make their own drones they should be able to improve their walking tanks and supply spare parts.

from what I understood 86 is the last line of defense? Not?
It should be in the republics interest to have them around in good shape

Yeah these are slave camps, no ifs ands or buts.

This team should just turn around and destroy San Magnolia.

I think Lena is due for a woefully rude awakening, her naivete is going to crush her I think.

There's no way the gov't just let's them become "human" again.

How come the war started just *9* years ago and after just 9 years they've started to believe everybody who doesn't have silver hair is "a humanoid pig that failed to evolve"???

I would understand if it was 90 years ago, but 9 years ago? I just don't get it. Didn't anybody have any contact with these "humanoid pigs" in the past 10 years? Before the war started? Didn't they see and communicate with them like with normal humans???

Very good point. Seems incredibly ridiculous to me currently. Perhaps later on in the story there will be something that explains the suddenness of treating non-silver haired people as dirt.

As explained during the lesson it's believed that Giad was destroyed by their defective creations. While those things are extremely advanced they seems to lack any form of large scope strategy and their attack pattern are limited to hit and run attacks. Since they know that Legion has a limited operational lifetime, the Republic is just using the 86 as human shields to inflict the modicum amount of damage that makes the enemy retreat.
There have fixed defensive lines, but since Legion has long range artillery, they are intended as last resort.

Anyway consider this: the Republic started putting Colorata (which are immigrants, the Republic is massively homogeneous ethnically) in interments camps for fear of sabotage and to blame the strings of defeats to sabotage. Why they fear sabotage and why people believe that? Have you guessed now from WHICH nation they mainly came from? Have you guessed why they may hate their kind so much to dehumanize them completely? Another hint should be the gigantic military cemetery seen in episode 4.

While I appreciate how the original anime-exclusive classroom scene is doing, I can't help but notice its sudden transitioning not being the same as the first episode. Also I find the BGM doesn't fit the mood of Lena's first half of her lecture. It's good to see some foreshadowing of wilted flowers & Lena's badge dropping all of a sudden being an ominous symbol, but I feel like I'm able to click with the Eighty-Sixers more than the main characters whom I only get monotonous feeling from watching their overall (maybe one-tone) personality; though that final scene indicates the male MC isn't smiling genuinely with the cat backing away suddenly. I mean I know Lena is the idealist commander , but after saying she was physically there in 86 area, I sometimes wonder whether she even tried to wonder why 86ers only be called with personal names. Her family & whichever adult military staff must have be meticulous in shielding Lena from learning the reason 86ers' real name goes unmentioned.

I assure you I appreciate this kind of storytelling where each side of the MCs POV is shifted; just don't expect me to love this series to a gung-ho/enthusiastic degree.

Nevertheless, there's no denying that this series is another ambitious project worthy to have season renewals given how most of the animation quality has so much great detailed quality.

During the lecture/classroom scene, regarding the sunlight entering the room through the window: I loved how the room got a little bit darker when Lena answered that she's entered the battlefield 'once' and shared the sensitive information, as the student gasped in disbelief. But then the room got lighter once Lena started to describe how the flag represents freedom, equality, brotherhood, justice and nobility, as well as the harsh conditions for the 86s.

I love small details like this in anime.

undertaker is a strategy and mecha wizard. and apparently an expert marksman with a handgun

undertaker's got a whole bin full of names of fallen comrades... sheesh. that's depressing. i feel like i might start forgetting who some of them are over time, which would also be sad

some of the questions i had during/after episode 1 were answered. they "know" there are only 2 more years left of the war because the "enemy's" "autonomous" military units will run out of power then. i'm not sure we can trust that the enemy units are autonomous. or that the enemy attacked the 85 first. i understand that the 85 enslaved the 86 because the 85 are racists. but how was the 85 able to enslave the 86 if most of the 85 military was wiped out? the 86 used to be citizens before being turned into slaves? much to learn, but based on this episode it seems like we'll learn things gradually as we go along

i wonder why that MP was in class? i guess her reputation definitely precedes her... she told the class she'd been on the battlefield only once but didn't fight. hmm, guess i'm gonna have to keep watching and see what she's referring to

spearhead doesn't seem to dislike their handler. and while they might not "like" her yet, they seem to respect her as a person and handler, given that she appears to respect and care about them

getting strong vibes that somebody's dying. maybe the undertaker? thinking about what he'll do with his freedom/citizenship. smiling. etc... (wouldn't make sense to kill him off now, but perhaps towards the end - an emotional shocker)

solid episode

From the LN:
The Republic’s eastern neighbor and superpower of the northern continent, the Empire of Giad, declared war on all its neighboring countries and began attacking with an army of the world’s first completely autonomous unmanned combat drone, Legion.

Calmer one after a very wild intro. Looks like Lena is adjusting well into being the Spearhead's Handler, as much as the squadron gives no fucks about her. And if I'm in them shoes, I would also be annoyed by how much Lena is actually talking with the 86ers. The mark of disgust from both sides are just too evident for me to brush off.

Well for months I've been familiar with the anime's OP & ED, and now that I've watched the anime, I now know the meaning of the things they show...and now I'm sad.

As we take a closer look at the combat the animation looks nice it isn't that hard to understand and the pacing is hefty

Lena is a bold one she isn't afraid of anyone even when it comes to talking back at her seniors she isn't afraid to let out the truth

She's really open for communications but the conversations are still kind of forced but they'll get there.

Shitty episode at best.

Mr. Undertaker tells to add the dead guy's armor to repair his own and the other guys act with surprise when he does this. Douchebag's been working 5 years, shouldn't u be used to this?

Also, when asked why he is ok with using the parts of a dead comrade, he just points to his undertaker sign like he is braggin. douchebag has no respect for dead and his rock collection is just 4 show.

not to mention the bitch general vladilena who acts like she is in a romcom.
She keeps spouting that the 86 are supposed to be treated as humans to a bunch of students without hoping for any change. To make matters worse, she keeps perpetuating the same system she is decrying by using the same 86 as her lapdogs to do her bidding.

Spouting such bs in the classroom will ensure that the generals at best will stop fighting and deprive her nation of fire power. Only reason this bitch keeps spouting such claims is because she is protected from up top by Jerome. Otherwise she is no different from the rest of em and would be shutting her fucking mouth like the rest of em. If she wants to enlighten the generals, she should do with a purpose in mind, not just naively do it because she thinks it is right.

Not to mention her sheer incompetance at being a general. She can't adjust her plans, aka her gathering point when updated with the new info that the troops are ready and recites the location like she has rote memorised this stuff.
She even keeps communicating with the troops without knowing she is compromising their location.

Not to mention she has the fucking hypocrisy to scold the troops(who are giving their lives day and night for protecting u and ur dumbass nation) for not writing good reports that she has not the fucking sense to read in the first place as she so admits before. And she brags to her friend that she is on a cordial relationship with her troops but doesn't know the basic fact that they aren't educated well.

I'd rather prefer General Esdeath from AgK over this dumbass.

And they explain the motivations in the second episode instead of the first episode smh. And even then the Empire's philosophy that the war will end in 2 years because of the warranty period of the automations expiring is sus af.

Akito the Exiled is leagues better than this.

Without change,we end up becoming the very person we hate.

I was dead until the moment I met you. I was a powerless corpse pretending to be alive. Living without power, without the ability to change my course, was bound to lead me to a slow death.

Lit Opening by Hitorie....

Yeahh!!! 1st battle for Lena as the handler-one and Spearhead Squadron lead by none other than the Undertaker himself, Shin
The battle was really lit, CGI was wonderful mixed with great BGM by Mighty Sawano and Kohta Yamamoto, loved every inch of their fighting scenes against legion.

Spearhead Squadron show their might in the battle and finally repelled the legion
On the other side Lena being a guest lecturer in some of military class, trying to explained the truth behind 86th people who actually operate the Juggernaut and zero casualties that they told were a lie. Still that explanation didn't really help too much as most of the alba's including the lecturer itself against it and she got accused of trying to spread false information.

After telling her complaints with her friend that working in lab, Annette finally Lena tried to speak the whole Spearhead Squadron through Para-raid. Squad reaction was really surprised against Lena, 1st alba that tried to get along and she ask lotsa things and what they wanna do in the future. Still it seems no exact trust that had been built yet.

And The ED was breathtaking, Mighty Sawano did it again with Mizuki beautiful vocal in "AVID".

This was a good episode. I'm still wondering whether or not the 86 group is bigger than we have seen so far. As much as I've seen, it looks like a group as big as a class in highschool.

Also, basically anyone who doesn't have silver hair, is a non-human in the eyes of the Republic of San Magnolia. How come there are many silver-haired people while we only see a small portion of different hair colors?
