| Unfortunately all of the characters are incredibly cliche, and the battles aren't so sophisticated, but the main plot of the story itself is pretty good. Unfortunately some of the interesting sub-plots from Ichika and Reiji's past were completely forgotten in the end. It would have been cool to somehow see how Ichika would get her mother out of that frozen statue, and how Reiji could somehow get into good terms with his big brother who out of petty revenge of feeling inferior killed their father. It's kinda simple in the end, but the action concept of monoke, how Jiro and Rago fuse, Rago himself being the coolest, along with the final villain... pretty cool. I liked it want to give it a 5/10, but because all of the characters are cliche, with a lot left unresolved, it's an acceptable solid 5/10. |

I loved this story!!! I am very upset that it ended!! I feel like it was just starting to get good! I wish he finished writing it! Does anyone know why it got cancelled?
| @Mackii666 Unfortunate timing when it was published. It was actually selling pretty decently (at least 20k+ per volume iirc), but it got cancelled anyway due to the unreasonable expectations of the idiots in charge of the editorial department at Jump SQ. Afterwards for a few years, new manga serializations that were published in the same magazine were actually selling less and doing more poorly than Black Torch but the editorial department must have realized that their sales expectations threshold was too high and they desperately wanted to have some newer works being published in the magazine that actually stuck around rather than being cancelled immediately. So then you had stuff like This Communication that ran for twice as many volumes despite not even selling half as much as Black Torch volumes. Kawaisugi Crisis always sold badly but it even got an anime. Dark Gathering was selling less than Black Torch did but it got an anime which did give it a bit of a sales boost in the end. I'm personally still seething with rage about Black Torch's undeserved demise. The story got rushed into a bloody mess and the author obviously didn't have any time to end the story in any kind of a decent way, which is why the manga got such an awful ending. Black Torch deserved better and if it would have been serialized today it would have survived and even had an anime. What's sad is that the mangaka of Black Torch made a new manga named Heart Gear afterwards, it sold significantly less than Black Torch ever did and that manga also got cancelled due to the many hiatuses caused by the mangaka's health issues. This author is extremely talented but was unfortunately screwed by the publisher despite having promising sales with BT and now his health is compromised, his other manga was also cancelled due to lack of interest and he may never get his chance at making a hit series due to his health issues which is criminal as his talent as a shonen mangaka is undeniable. |
