I almost didn't watch it when I looked at the score on MAL. But I gave it a try, and the artstyle, the music and the first episode were quite refreshing.
The second episode was more classic, so I'm waiting to see what will happen, but I'm surprised that it's under 7 when cringey anime like Hige wo Soru have almost an 8 ....

My guess is that people who rate shows from the first episode tend to have harsher standards and if the very first episode doesn't meet those standards, they just give a low score right off the bat without giving the show time to expand and tell it's story

I found the first episode of this so boring I couldn't even complete it. Whilst Hige wo Soru was somewhat entertaining. Although I haven't rated it yet.
I gave up on character of the week since it takes too much thinking. I'll just change my forum pfp to whoever I want every week lol.

The score of this show isn't even bad and it's a pretty accurate or generous score as ep 1 and 2 are for some reason pretty dull to watch but it has okay moments but overall, it's not really a strong seasonal so far, hopefully that changes as the anime continues.

People (including myself) rate show off first impressions. Though we go back and change it (normally) once the show ends. I gave this show a 6 off of first impressions. I have watched both of the episodes that have released. I feel the story is basic, I don’t really like the character design and I, to be honest, don’t really understand what’s going on half the time. I gave it a six because I think the MC’s power is really cool. Though I could easily move my score down to a 5. It was meh. Also, don’t compare Hige wo Soru to Jouren. They are completely different. Obviously people like Hige wo Soru better in most people’s opinion if it has 3 times the viewers and a higher score. Both shows are new and we will see how they turn out. Just don’t say “a cringey show” when you just personally like it. Hige wo Soru is obviously being much better received than Jouren. I personally like Hige wo Soru a lot more that Jouren.

I don't get that either.
This one has a late 90s to early 00 vibe but with a beautiful art.
Probably another Shigurui, great in everything but not made for everyone.

The plot itself is cringey :(((((( and was it really necessary that the girl make like 5 advances to MC to make us understand what kind of life she had before ? One time was enough. And that's really personnal but I can't stand panties shot, even more when it's on a minor, but I can't blame it for this, since it happened in a lot of anime. But these things made this show for ME, "cringey".

English is not my mother language so maybe "cringey" is not the right term, but I use it to talk about the fact that the show made me rolled my eyes several times.

It felt like the plot is only based on the fantasm to have a schoolgirl living under the same roof.

I hope it will be more than that, but the first episode just left the impression that it will just be that they will fall in love and have a "healthy" relationship despite what the girl have been through (and I really hope they won't try to justify her behaviour by sexual abuses she could have experienced).

So yes of course it's a personnal opinion, and yes I found it cringey but I'm sure a lot of people will like it since it was watchable despites these things that bothered me lol

In my opinion, the first episode left a lot of questions and no answers. I’m still kind of confused on what the plot is.

Don’t take the scores seriously m8, MAL’s scores haven’t really meant anything for awhile now. I personally think it’s nice so far and am looking forward to how the story progresses onward.

What the heck is wrong with people.
This anime has me hooked and the really good shit is about to go down.
"Manga readers are annoying, all they do is complain or spoil the anime we discuss in an anime forum.
They should really do their whining at manga forums.

I think for me the story just hasn’t picked up enough for me to give it anything higher than a 7 but a 7 is a solid score. The art style and sound design is amazing and I have hope for the story but it’s hard to tell after only 2 episodes. I think because it’s an original it doesn’t have fans from the get go already like a lot of anime does so it will probably just take a little while to pick up just like Wonder Egg Priority last season, that took a few weeks to get noticed.

this genre/kind of story isn't really popular and not a lot of people enjoy it so im guessing some of those people stumbled upon this show, tried it, and didnt end up enjoying it a lot. or just anyone lmao, they tried it and didnt enjoy it. personally i wouldn't say its a really good show but its interesting enough that its good. and its still the 2nd ep so who knows maybe some opinions might change

This show needs more episode (which it will have) to fully flesh out the story and the background behind why everything is happening to make people rate it higher, as The story is in a little bit of a mess without background knowledge.

Has a 8.60 mean score

Gave it 5 first episode. Second episode made me drop it down to a 4, and I expect it to be around 3-5/10 once it ends.

Just popped in to say my two cents regarding the question, which I think is really understandable by the way, so thank you, OP :)

Let's see if I can answer it without any toxicity. In my opinion (as someone who watched 2 episodes, and then dropped the show) the score for this series is so low is because it partakes of several of the points people have mentioned above: the fact that it's an original show, the fact that just the art design is inadequate to keep viewers interested, and (most relevantly) the fact that the storyline has problems.

Now, speaking for myself, I was hyped when I read the initial synopsis, because I am a huge fan of alternate historical storylines in anime. I deeply enjoyed shows like Shounen Onmyouji, Youjo Senki, Pumpkin Scissors and Donten ni Warau , among others, for this exact reason. But I don't think I speak for just myself when I say that a lot of us anime fans, especially those who have reservations about going into the weeb spectrum, really pay attention to the storyline while trying out a new anime. More specifically, we tend to focus on the movement of the plot, the pace of the storytelling, the sense-making or world-building aspect of the story, among other things when we try out a new anime.

In the case of Jouran, while the art design is 'refreshing', as mentioned by an earlier poster, and the soundscape is cool, the plot unfortunately is not coherent. There are too many jump cuts in the story, and the plot is moving by fits and starts. Let's take the most recent episode, for example.
The narration accompanying it is solid too, and it creates an anticipation that we will at last find out the complete origin of Sawa/Yuki. However, at the most important moment, the scene shifts, the music changes, and it's like the thought that was forming remains unsaid. For me, at least, this was jarring to say the least.

Another example of the characters not behaving true to the storyline is the final moments of episode 2, when
. It's these things that turned me off the series entirely; not knowing what logic each character is following, nor having the characters follow their consistent internal logic once it's expressed, is a turn off for anyone who watches an anime expecting to be absorbed by it.

That said, just because people drop a series, or rate it low, doesn't mean that they will never return to it. As for myself, I have plans to rewatch some of the shows I put in the Dropped list in the past. Threads like OP's play a big part in changing minds, so I think we shouldn't close our minds to the possibility that a lot of people could return to watch the show once a certain amount of time has passed. I know I would definitely return to this show someday. Never say never :D

If Hige wo Soru is the show about that guy taking in a high school girl, then yes it definitely deserves a better score than Joran. That show shows its characters have standards/ morals and can grow and reflect through said standards/ morals. However Joran does not reflect this easily if at all. The side characters cooperate with the main, yet they all have the present mind in their dialogue to abandon them once something doesn’t go according to plan. The main character is so edgy it only really distinguishes itself from its own sidekicks by cutting themself with a bird that is given no explanation. The art style is absolutely a refresher, but the character interaction, plot, fight scenes, and are underwhelming given the full picture. I have rated this show as a 4 and it’s not going to change until I see the show improve.
