How in the hell did they manage to ruin the reunion scene?

Holy shit. Spoiling that it’s Eren who’s waiting for the two of them before actually showing Reiner’s shock?

The shock on Reiner’s face is meant to get us wondering: What is he looking at for him to be so shocked? Come on man, this is basic stuff. I applaud them for having the bravery to change Isayama’s god-tier storyboards in every single episode but many times, it isn’t for the best.

Other than that: Great pacing, horribly uninspired musical choices that don’t get the tragedy of the situation at all, beautiful cinematography (Hayashi’s usage of light sources is fantastic), absolutely decent character acting/design and a couple of cheap anime-only scenes, along with a couple of rushed scenes that had a lot of potential to reach certain poetic qualities.

Btw, wasn’t Reiner supposed to be in his most worn-down and melancholic state ever at the beginning of the episode? (See my profile pic for reference, but the spread itself is a masterpiece, making the Eren/Reiner/Falco parallels more bold than ever: https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ikpdzyfQiic/XdIh6cSK9VI/AAAAAAAANrU/br5WkTRe72w_AU8pHFU32lL8SiGEoZYMgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/030.jpg + https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ByyBTcJi2-Y/XdIh67R0x3I/AAAAAAAANrY/jGtndiE-6rkhcEbOyuOGjEzgGRQ0kjJbACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/031.jpg) The man had tried to kill himself less than an hour ago and was stopped by a struggling Falco because he was reminded of his younger self. They completely ignored everything that happened before their little meeting. I don’t know why Hayashi claimed that his goal was to reproduce the manga’s facial expressions as much as possible, the episodes so far are filled with little omissions like this one.

All in all, the most watchable and focused episode of The Final Season so far, 7/10.

I was kinda disappointed by that too but I assume its so you're able to get hyped and acknowledge Eren being there while the animes playing, whereas in manga you can go at your own pace. I assume the logic is it lets people get excited about the meeting and be focused for reiners reaction than throwing them both together at once, at the end of the day its literally only like 10 seconds before they show his face. But I agree that it was a missed opportunity.

Stuff dont like
-they fucked up eren design so much
-bad directing: when magath and willy talks at stage and magath sits backwards and I was like why is he sitting like that as like he wants no one to sees him talks with willy in the middle of an empty space. found this very stupid and check the manga and they talk normal in that and not just this characters replying others person either too slow or too fast you can clearly see director dont understand the manga

In what world is Eren’s design “fucked up”

Manga readers nitpick so much

Okay, by this point almost all anime onlies had a clear idea that this was Eren. So there was no point in keeping it a secret any longer. I mean you can't disguise Yuki Kaji's voice.

It's really depressing how i liked this episode better than the previous one, depressing because Reiner's flashback was my most anticipated piece before chapter 99.

Willy's VA is fine, the whole conversation with Magath was reproduced decently and almost nothing was cut, i'm glad they included that glance Magath gave Willy when he commented harshly on Marley's warmongering foreign politics. Their conversation in the internment zone was also executed fine, i loved their way of talking in metaphors.

But unfortunately they cut Zeke playing catch with Colt, now this is manga spoiler:

I wonder how many anime onlys paid attention to Udo's information about how bad Eldian rights are in foreign countries. According to what he said Marley is the best place in the world for Eldians, since the country itself draw its strength from the power of the titans, one only can imagine how horrible and barbaric their basic human rights must be outside. This has always been a weakness of the manga itself in my opinion, that this crucial information to understand the issue of Eldian discrimination and for each reader to form their own point of view, was stated only a couple of times in small quick panels. I feared the anime would cut it out entirely, glad to see that they didn't.

Well done on that grandpa Yeager scene. The way the soundtrack slowly built up gave a touch of eeriness as we realize how much the past tragedies took their tolls on the old man's mind.

Lastly, i have mixed feelings about that ending. First, i feel like Eren doesn't have the same knife-sharp eyes as in the manga when greeting Reiner. Second, manga spoiler again:

Once again, you explained my issues with the episode as well. That's why I didn't focus on those in my post unlike how some people assumed I had to change the subject because this episode was great and had no issues. These posts are deleted now, but they know themselves and this is my reply to them.

On top of the things you mentioned I want to talk more about this: I don't think MAPPA is any more manga accurate than Wit and that was supposed to be their saving grace and it was the reason why people were hyping them a few months ago. I really liked the Helos shots in this episode but their persistence in changing every little panel to make it theirs is definitely detrimental to the overall quality as they often change them for the worse in my opinion. It is especially true when it comes to directing and framing dialogues as they often lack the intensity and tension compared to previous seasons. For example, I really hate to see the backs of characters or only their eyes for too long when they are talking, angles are usually very weird too. I can confidently say I don't think their understanding of AoT and mine are similar.

Lastly, I think this episode is 7/10 as well and it is only second to ep 2 to me. Still, extremely disappointing for AoT standards. Btw, don't people acknowledging this episode as "great with no issues/best one yet" and then attacking me prove the point I have been making for months? Arguably the best episode yet is outsourced and the next one, which is one of the most hyped episodes, will be outsourced too. MAPPA literally can't handle the production or handle it properly at least. Why get mad when I say I expect a collapse because of these reasons?

Reiner being the kid's (+ his own friends?!) big brother paying for everything at the festival was just the cutest.

Also Falco and Gabi scenes were lol after the race.

Kind of sad that Falco has to be there as Eren & Reiner finally hash things out, hope it wont change his view of him, as he seemed like he really looked up to Eren.

The end gets me damn hyped... just like last episode. Only for this episode to be a bit of a letdown again. It feels like barely anything is happening in these episodes and we're already 25% through with this season ;_;

Don't you worry, once episode 5 hits, it will be a never ending hype of episodes to come after! Episode 5 is when the fun really begins!

I hope so, so far the hype wasn't justified. If this season does not get at least as epic as episode 6 of season 2 then I will be disappointed though. Now I have to wait two weeks for the next episode T_T

The issue is; it's not even nitpicking for me and I doubt it is for you as well. These are the things I naturally notice when I'm completely chill and just watching the show. They must be thinking I stop at every frame and inspect it or something. I just know how to look and where to look because I'm familiar with how cinema works. On the contrary, I wouldn't notice these if I was trying to nitpick and pause every other second.

Honestly, this should be encouraged and people should try to notice these things themselves and try to understand "the stage" instead of frowning upon being a careful watcher. Having more knowledge doesn't stop them from liking something as it essentially comes down to personal preference in the end.

This season is making Reiner look like the main character. In the manga Zeke had more appearances and dialogue. This is bad considering that the real main characters of this season are Eren and Zeke.

Because Reiner IS the main character, from Marley's perspective, just as Eren is the main character from Eldia/Paradis' perspective. I don't know where you got that Zeke is the main character along with Eren from when that's clearly not the case.

The Ackermann subplot may be covered when Eren talks about them to Mikasa and Armin in the table.

Eren using name Kruger as well meeting his grandfather was very much epic.
Pieck was also really cute though ngl.

Next episode should be something very epic, from the declaration to Eren meeting with Reiner after 4 years again, Can't wait.

Also a very interesting twist that Eldian Tybur family, is actually the real rulers of Marley government. I wonder what really makes them allow Marleyan to treat Eldians like subhumans.

I was obviously sarcastic when I mentioned the nitpicking. Lmao.

Yes. I agree with everything you said. Keeping an analytical approach to cinematic mediums even when in a chill state can boost one's viewing experience astronomically.

To everybody else replying to me: Aside from whether you agree with my critical views on The Final Season or not, I tend to share a lot of my personal understanding of the source material/visual storytelling in general as well. please don't let some fans (who think that you should say that everything is ideal even when it's not) stop you from voicing your opinions.
I personally am quite happy to read them. I'm a casual watcher and I don't usually consciously notice good/bad directorial or artistic choices unless they jump at me, but recently I have been taking more interest in how anime is made, so I really appreciate good analysis of what is going on with AOT. It's interesting to know why some of the best stuff of the previous seasons was so much more emotionally impactful than what we are seeing this season.

Btw someone mentioned earlier that season 2 was perfect in quality... I just happened to rewatch the first two episodes yesterday, geez, the CG horses were just horrible, but I admit I paid no attention to them at all at that time. "For with much wisdom comes much sorrow" I guess.

CygamesPictures was on the credits for this ep for production cooperation. There has been rumours around that NUT will be involved in a similar manner even way before the whole thing aired.

Re: @MironBiron and @SirTristram, those changes aren't something that were done in a whim as Isayama has been hands-on with this adaptation and highly likely to be calling the shots and approval on what and what's not to show in each episodes. However, I agree witg most of the critical points of this episode but I won't go as far as to say that MAPPA can't properly handle the whole thing when the creator himself is directly involved in the creative pipeline.

Objectively they're doing a good job in clutching the majority's interest and hype so far, and Hayashi's no slouch either when doing so. While this is almost as close (or for others, better) from what Araki/Koizuka had brought us, this is better than having none at all or have one with way more claimed issues than this one. Just my 2¢ and yes, I'm open for a good discussion.

we love a good calm before the storm (o}o) the easing into the ending credits (shogeki) with the warriors just chilling was really lovely

some of the animation looked janky in places, but apart from that it was an enjoyable episode that went super quickly for me :)

let's gooooo

how do u find out which studio outsourced

CygamesPictures was on the credits for this ep for production cooperation. There has been rumours around that NUT will be involved in a similar manner even way before the whole thing aired.

NUT helped with 2nd key animation in s4 ep 1

Don't you worry, once episode 5 hits, it will be a never ending hype of episodes to come after! Episode 5 is when the fun really begins!

I hope so, so far the hype wasn't justified. If this season does not get at least as epic as episode 6 of season 2 then I will be disappointed though. Now I have to wait two weeks for the next episode T_T

The hype wasn't related to the first 4 episodes, episode 5 and beyond is where the hype originates from.

I don't understand the people bitching about the pacing. I mean, yeah, it's definitely slower than what we were used to and there's barely any action in these 4 episodes we've got so far...but how is that a bad thing? I love how they portrayed the new characters and the Marley world so far. I'm an anime-only fan and I'm pretty sure it would've been even more confusing if they rushed a lot with this part.

That being said, it's gonna be a long wait until the next episode. The hype is real.

that I'm not sure but studio WANPACK also helped alot WIT with s1 and in s2, sadly they had to close down around early 2018 and that's why s3 had quite alot of issues compared to s2( that and because of the schedule of course)

it did? I personally didn't notice any issues, all seasons were animated flawlessly imo

Anyway to add my thoughts sigh...

In general the episode was well paced compared to EP3. I liked the music score some of the new tracks are good. I like the voice actor for Tybur. Agree on the fact the last scene shouldn't have been post credit too big a deal.

That's about it? Yeah happy they didn't rush through some of the more laid back stuff. I remember when I read the manga loling at Reiner footing the bill for everything. Still a great scene here.

Man, I hate to be the one doing a goatsie before MAL forum, but I have a take to give

I'm lowkey getting kinda bored with the most recent developments.
We're 1/4th done with the anime at this point and we're still doing the set-up for the plot to come

Usually I don't mind it since basically all of S2 and S3P1 were all season long set-ups but the plot delivery in those felt... more impactful I guess?

In the last 3 episodes of following young warriors and Reiner over the city most noteworthy things to happen are Reiner's flashback and Eren reveal (x2 if I may add)

I don't want to come off as the stereotypical 'actionfriend' since I did enjoy both S2 and S3P1 a lot, but the monotheistic scenery and quite mild plot and reveal delivery is starting to get to me in the negative way, where I'm starting to get a little bit bored. Which is not a sentence I ever expected to say towards Attack on Titan.

Because Reiner IS the main character, from Marley's perspective, just as Eren is the main character from Eldia/Paradis' perspective. I don't know where you got that Zeke is the main character along with Eren from when that's clearly not the case.

The Ackermann subplot may be covered when Eren talks about them to Mikasa and Armin in the table.

yes they might show the ackermann subplot later.

As for the rest I wont discuss it here since this is anime discussion
