----------------------------------------
Quite the climactic chapter. Already, by having Kunio face Hidemine, a man should already have strong feelings for due to his abuse and confinement, has now killed his only friend. That showdown has weight to it. And our boy Kunio tanked many shots from an intoxicated Hidemine with his arms, Fukumoto naturally letting us know that it is biologically possible and implementing an element of luck with a smaller gun being the reason for his success! With one bullet left, Hidemine makes sure to keep it ready, and after Morita batman’s back onto the 23rd floor distracting Kunio, he uses it, in a flash, there is one more death.

That was extreme, the bloody arms were gross and metal, and we did take the next step to make this as dark and sad as possible. Fukumoto’s decision to make Morita work for, not the people who are in the most pain, but rather the man who has caused the pain and started the cycle of anger, abuse, and revenge is an interesting one. Honestly fascinating, probably the worst person a Fukumoto lead has sided with which I have experienced, you'd expect them to face a man like Hidemine. Morita kept the compassion and moral heart, but his job's priorities were with the demon.

Along with this, the constant downward spiral is interesting too. I'd argue, with exceptions like Aiga, one staple of Gin to Kin is Morita leaving an arc with a sense of success and growth; and one could even argue Aiga does that through Morita's spirits. Right now, it certainly doesn't feel like that. Before Katsuhiro arrived things looked good, Hidemine and the three eldest sons were safe, Morita saved the day as always, but with the surprise visitor we got; one of the sons had his face shot off, Katsuhiro was stabbed in the throat, and now Kunio has gone down too. Of the Kamui family, 3 sons are dead, 2 should remain; and the two most seemingly cutthroat have certainly lived. Katsuteru should be the next patriarch. After the first phase, it feels like Morita could help no one and could only ever divert who was going to die. Brutal... a true tragedy, huh?

By the way can we look back at Hidemine's dog, Junichiro? I find it interesting that we specifically noted that Junichiro was his 'supportive friend' in the lonely hospital room, was depicted playing with him, and holding him, and Junichiro even saved his life. This was chapter 66 if anyone is wondering. It goes to show that even this cuthroat man who looks down on others as weak trash to exploit and seems to have no love for his children does in fact understand the value of compassion, does it not? He too appeared to have a friend. He too needed somebody there to support him. I just think it's an interesting aspect of his character to front-load his characterization with. I mean, it was the narrator speaking! What we saw had to be true!
