Can we really label this anime "Romance"? I get that in the VN (and OVA by extension), Nekopara is very much a romance between Kashou and the catgirls, but this doesn't seem to be the case at all for the TV anime.

Like, Kashou might as well as not exist given how little he actually contribute to this plot; even Shigure has more screentime than him. You can't even argue yuri either as it is only subtext at most.

IMO, we should replace "Romance" with "Slice of Life". You can probably add in "Ecchi" as well. (The ecchi kind of died off in the 2nd half of the season)

yeah slice of life ecchi definitely sounds more accurate than romance, unless tags indicate that you automatically fall in love with them *wink wink* see what you did there DB mods

I have never seen so many mislabeled shows on any other site than on MAL, and this here is a very good example. I honestly don't know why its the case, and genres tags very rarely get adjusted and changed after the series finished airing. In the past I took labels posted on here quite seriously and checked out quite a lot of shows mainly because of the genre presented, only to be disappointed and confused later on. Nowadays I don't care about the tags too much since they don't tell much about the shows anyway, but when I see some blatanlty wrong label it still irks me a bit.

Know how you feel, there is a wide difference between "romance" and "slice-of-life".

Honestly, the developers of this website should just allow anyone to change the information about the anime & characters without 'approval'. What's the point if nobody even does the freaking job? Geez.

I definitely agree that this anime should not be labeled as "romance". MAL staff should change it. It's a pretty big deal. Had to drop it because it wasn't what I was expecting.

This is kind of a big deal...

I tried finding a button to edit it myself (with MAL having to confirm the information I was trying to edit) but there was no button for it, sadly.

The main genre is Slice-of-Life Comedy, with a very light touch of Ecchi (in comparison to other Ecchi animes). Even though MC-kun is technically in this anime, he does nothing worthwhile and is barely a side-character. So no harem for you!

Though, in the 2nd half of the season, the yuri undertones between the catgirls get quite strong at times, but it doesn't really go beyond that (they are, for all intents and purposes, "sisters" under the same household).

All in all, this is a Cute (Cat) Girls Doing Cute Things anime at heart.

If you know the Visual Novels, it's probably more accurate to consider this anime a spin-off / "fandisc" rather than an adaptation.
