Ah, Thorkell does regard Thors as a true warrior.

Not surprising that Thorfinn gets triggered after Thorkell told him that story. Interesting that Thorkell does go down though. I also kinda like how they adapted chapter 41's scene when Thors went all hell loose on him. Thorkell is so pissed this episode. I personally thought the VA did a solid job at protraying his personality (reminds me of Uvogin from HxH)

Angry Thorkell is honestly terrifying.

Great episode, so much stuff happened today, with the most insane one being Thorfinn cooperating with Askeladd in order to defeat Thorkell. Askeladd is indeed Thorfinn's father figure.

Canute really has changed. Convincing Thorkell to join him and his army against Sweyn isn't something any soldier or captain would be able to do. Let's see what this united front will do.

Like a person from reddit said, this show is pure testosterone.

Overall, 5/5

Considering how many people miss the point of the show I have a feeling this might be a controversial episode.

Personnaly, I loved every bit of it, even if the sakugatard in me expected something else. Between Thorkhell's flashback, Askeladd helping Thorfinn, Canute's speech to Thorkhell, the writing is simply spectacular.

Now at least people will stop complaining about Torfinn vs Thorkell. Another stellar episode, although I still prefer the last episode. It was still extremely good to see the Prince coming out of his shell once again when he admitted that his father did not love him. And also when he spared Askeladd for killing Ragnar.
My boi Canute has grown a dick and it is now bigger than all.

He was actually referring to Hnefatafl, an early Nordic board game. They just subbed it as Shogi for the japanese audience to understand what he meant.

Nice we got the flashback of Thors escaping the Jomvikings with his wife and baby Ylva and their encounter with Thorkell after faking his death. Always wondered how Thorkell would end if he followed them. Thorkell lost the duel against Thorfinn due to Askeladd's scheme as well as his left eye and decided to follow Canute to see his potential. Another very well-directed episode once again.

I don't understand what that trolls actually means with character development. I haven't look something more great that Vinland Saga besides Berserk and Vagabond. Did they expect the characters to become stronger all of a sudden, or maybe like power up or some shit?

Damn this episode was awsome.
Thorfinn could have finished uncle Thorkell while he was knocked down, but i guess he just went for his eye in the heat of the moment.

Now Askeladd,Thorfinn and Thorkell work together, that will be interesting

He does literally say the word shogi though. I get that it's probably just a language thing, an expression that will mean something to the japanese audience without the need to explain it and we can extrapolate that that's what he means but it's pretty funny still.

IIRC, the japanese always use the word "shogi" to refer to chess games. Now people probably noticed that because the subs usually use the word "chess" unless they are referring to the actual shogi game. Since this wasn't the case with Amazon subs, it was more difficult to overlook this I guess.

Boy, what a great episode.

It seems like Thorkell really respected Thors as a warrior but he also has been envying him for all these years.

It's good seeing Canute go from an introverted boy who can't even talk to anyone except Ragnar to convince Thorkell to follow him in just a few episodes. His character development has to be the most sudden one I've ever seen.

Also, damn. Thorfinn has royal blood and Thorkell was his great uncle? What a bloodline.

I'd forgotten that Thorkell was related to the head of the Jomsvikings (and as a result to Thorfinn as well).

You can always judge a good show by how well it handles the non action scenes. I often find myself enjoying the emotional scenes/speeches with the subtle piano playing in the background more than the actual fights( the fights are amazing btw) but yeah another 5/5 episode

I really didn't like this episode as much as I should've.

They rushed too much the source material now. A LOT of scenes were cut and some simply lost impact (like Thorfinn's counterattack).

Still a good episode, but one of my least favorites of this show so far. I can't help it, I've read the manga (until chapter 43).

I thoroughly enjoyed the episode despite I do agree the Thorfinn's win over Thorkell was underwhelming and slightly rushed or glossed over. I am sort of happy that it was done in a cheap/sneaky way to keep some sort of realism instead of what we might see in other series' where a guy's will can make him 'go past his limits'
Askeladd's masterplan came to fruition and the mad lad actually had the balls to admit to Neo Canute that he killed Ragnar in front of his new 500 soldiers. Hope he reaches his end goal which I believe is to destroy the Danes?
Neo Canute talks like he has found a purpose to his pointless life, but really he is about to use his name and newly found charisma to end his family's career through bloodshed most likely. How far has this Christian boy strayed smh.

Really hyped for the next arc and sad that this season is ending soon. We need season 2 asap.

This friggin episode. We didn't just get a little flashback regarding Thors and Thorkell's relationship, but also witnessed the birth of a new power. I was impressed by Canute who showed his determination again. Thorkell was crazy too, he didn't even bat an eye over his lost eye. What a guy. I guess he will be handicapped now, tho.

It's crazy that we're going to see Thorkell, Askellad and Thorfinn fighting together under the same man.

Feels like the next episode will mark the beginning of a newstart for this series or rather said, that things will get real from there on. Wonder if there will be another flashback or not. In any case, I'm damn hyped.

I agree with you, this episode has been rushed and I don't understand the staff why doing it now (they could put this Canute dialogue together with return on capital in episode 20)

I hope this don't ruin that ''Askeladd scene'', it would be disappointing

The thing that I find most interesting about these last couple episodes is how it made it seem like we were gonna see some grand battle between Thorfinn and Thorkell but in actuality, their fight wasn't even featured very prominently. The character development last episode was really good and I like how this episode showed more of Canute's growth when he formed that alliance (standing up to Thorkell takes massive balls). Thorfinn defeating Thorkell with Askeladd's help was also cool, but again it seemed to get overshadowed by the non-action events (which isn't a bad thing at all).

Also, it was nice to see Thors again and holy shit, think for a moment just how powerful Thors must have been to be able to stop/deflect full force ax swings from Thorkell with his bare hands. What a legend.

Another excellent episode off the back of last week. While last week was almost exclusively the Canute show, this brought everything else together in excellent fashion, even bringing Thors back into it for the first time in however many episodes. The soundtrack was also especially good this week, I felt.

My only complaint would be Thorkell's video game weakspot, which was pretty stupid but also didn't exactly make much sense; I'm guessing it had something to do with that flashback to the battle at Maldon, but it wasn't very clear to me what happened there.

So Canute doesn't show fear from a Thorkell punch, and now he's going to follow him, what a lame mediocre development. This development is the same as that fart development of Canute last week.

I swear this series needs to work on developments of its story, because fuck, it is skewing a lot for me. The fight was also terrible it made me to wash my screen with the holy water.

At this point they are trying so hard to extend this series from its original plot.

I was thinking about this too. In the last episode it seemed as if he had lost all tolerance for war, but the first thing he does this episode is announce his intention to fight his father for the throne. What did his epiphany from the last episode actually mean, then?

I'm also wondering why Askeladd would confess to killing Ragnar. How does that help him? Wouldn't it make Canute despise him?

I think specifically he hates violence for the sake of violence and dying for no good reason. It seems like building a paradise here on earth is something he sees as worth dying for. It looks like Thorkell sees Thors when he looks at Canute, but I feel like Thors & Canute differ in that Thors is 100% against violence.

But that's the thing right? These wars in England were never violence for the sake of violence. One could look at it from the perspective of Sweyn and his noble reason of uniting the kingdom under one son thereby bringing peace to the kingdom. War is always fought for peace by at least one side, if not both. And Canute's was for peace would be no different than any other war fought on Earth.

Thorkell has what in boxing is called a "glass jaw" (yes, it's a thing in real life): a fighting vulnerability where one is easily knocked out via a single hard blow to the chin or jaw (due to lack of conditioning, insufficient training or damage from past cerebral concussions).

Canute specifically voiced his dislike of meaningless battles that will lead nowhere (like the one being fought between Askeladd's and Thorkell's men). But to create his idea of paradise on earth, there are battles that cannot be avoided, and one of them is the one that his father started against him the moment he sent his son to die in the campaign against England.

As for Askeladd's confession, it is indeed a very intriguing moment for his character, a man usually so full of deceit. I see it as a sign that his pledge to Canute is different from his usual entirely self-serving schemes, and that he truly means to be loyal to Canute and not just manipulate him. Remember, it's always been a dream of his to serve a truly worthy king (and one that might help protect Wales), and he was hoping Canute would become that man, hence him gambling everything on him, and now that Canute has grown strong enough to win over even Thorkell, there must be no doubt in Askeladd's mind he's the one he should serve, and him coming clean with his killing of Ragnar may have been his way of showing the extent of his conviction and sincerity in that pledge.

The kid is piratically a midget fighting against a giant who can kill him in one shot, there is no such as fairness in battle. Notice how Thorkell had no problem with Thorfinn clawing his eye out. Everything he did was fair game.

Ah yes its all coming to a heed. The finale is soon upon us.
