Who else watched the movie on launch day?
There was a large typhoon but I still did anyway.

What are your thoughts? I have so many questions but no one to discuss it with.

Just Saw it in the theatres, and it was a really good movie!
still not better than AnoHana, but it had a little bit different taste than AnoHana.
I would recommend this movie to EVERYONE WHO LIKES GOOD DRAMAS!
And yes, it was a bit unpredictable when you finish the movie...
9/10!

I watched it about a week after launch as all the ads made me curious. I hadn't seen a PV though so I was surprised to see the supernatural element used in this movie.

But if you can look past that part, the human interaction/drama depicted is very down to earth and relatable I feel.

The ending was predictable early on but I have to praise them for going through with it. It stayed realistic in the end despite the main feature of the plot being beyond reason.

I also liked the sisters as characters a lot!
If there is one part that personally didn't sit well with me it would be the backgrounds. They sometimes felt too much like photos and not like anime to me. That's being nitpicky though, haha.

Just got back home after catching this one in a local theatre. I think this one will stick in my memory better than "Tenki no Ko" which I couldn't remember seeing about a month and a half I saw it. (That was kind of funny. I went to see "Ad Astra" and remembered that I had seen two movies in the summer. I could recall seeing "Archimedes no Dai Sen"(sic), which was pretty bad, but couldn:t remember "Tenki no Ko" until when I got home and found my ticket stub).

Anyways, this one flows well. The resolution of the main relationship question is kind of a foregone conclusion but the path taken to get there is interesting. The out of the ordinary elements are fun and the movie doesn't focus too much on the mechanics of them. The ending is nice and not super over dramatic. The word I'd hang on it is "refreshing", more or less satisfying, with a light dash of cute. All in all the movie had a Japanese TV drama feel to it, which may or may not be a good thing depending on your experience with that sort of stuff.

Oh yeah, stick around for the end credits. I really kind of liked the song and additional drawings.

And yes, the backgrounds had to have been photos touched up with a filter to give them more of an anime film feel.

...And be ready for product placement.... ;)

I did not quite understand what the guitar strings represented, or what she meant at the end of the movie by repeating how blue the sky is. Please enlighten me.

A pretty movie nonetheless with good emotional moments. Climax fell flat, but maybe due to my lack of understanding. Will rewatch for sure

I really liked this one a lot, it really reminded me a lot of Anthem of the Heart and its ability to developing its characters without disrupting the original premise that a lot of other films fail to do. The exposition and some dialogue have been cheesy and too textbook but other than that, it managed to convey everything without a lot of unnecessary information. Everyone's role is defined and isn't just added just for the sake of interaction.

Honestly, the concept hits really close to home for me as well as the parallel perspectives of the shinno's and the MC

I just watched this last night with my friends (we were all alone on Valentine's Day rip), and I liked it. I especially liked the music parts, the one where Aoi sang Gandhara while playing the bass.

Also really liked the relationship between the siblings. How much they love each other, and how their regrets stemmed from their love for one another.

I also made my own review! Kinda said here what I said in my review lol. Shameless plug here hehe: https://myanimelist.net/reviews.php?id=329697

I watched this movie in VIP cinema, it's very comfortable to sit in the long couch lol about the story, I haven't started it though.. but I love the scene when they show flashback of how Akane take care of her sister.. a great love from a sister (it makes me cry a little) and also the ending is hanging, I'm shock and ask "that's it?!" I want to see more Akane x Shinno moments, it's too little.. I still wait even the credits are already showing, I'm waiting what happened to them after.. I'm glad that they put a picture of their wedding, at least they get together at the end.

The scene where Shinno and Aioi fly, it reminds me of Tenki no Ko but I still prefer Tenki no Ko.

When I watched this movie, a cute lady was sitting a seat away from me. She left the studio after around 40 minutes. I should've followed her & asked her out instead. Maybe we could have a nice discussion about this movie over coffee or tea.

But, nope. I was just being foolish. I forced myself to finish this movie. This was my first ever (3/10) rating for any movie.

The movie was so boring. I'm not simply slandering this movie here.. Seriously, it was a torture. Why though? The answer is the background music. There were so many silent moments. So many dialogues without music and when the music was there, it was not very memorable, let alone moving.

The story was just.. Ah, just see it yourself.

I really couldn't relate with the edgy main character or the supposedly "realistic" side characters... The only saving grace was Chika and she wasn't even that great either.

ngl seeing Mari Okada behind the scripts gave me some slight PTSD, because I didn't know if it was gonna be a pretty good one or a terrible one. Luckily it turned out to be the former

This was actually a pretty nice film through and through. Really dug the characters....except for Shinnouske but it was nice to see his development and that recognition of his dreams. I didn't really know how to feel about the romance though. One on hand, I wanted to ship Shinno x Aoi, but it would be weird given how in love Akane x Shino were (plus past Shino literally just got rejected). Shinnouske x Akane wasn't really feeling their ship apart from the stairs part.

but other than that I liked the themes/messages and the metaphors used, simple yet executed well. Also really liked the subtlety used as well (like when Akane was crying), made the situations all more impactful without being too in your face. OST was spot on too. The pictures during the credit scenes nice to see as well

overall 8/10

I see why people compare this to AnoHana a fair bit now. In terms of Quality alone however, I'd say it's more on the level of "Kokoro ga Sakibatterunda" from my point of view but a worthy addition to Okada Mari-sensei's works nonetheless.

Time-travel bit aside, the Characters, Setting and Theme that the movie covered were all interesting in various ways. Despite the movie being over 1 hr 40 mins., I didn't find myself bored at any time additionally and that's a big plus as far as I'm concerned. Plus, I got a little teary-eyed too unsurprisingly enough.

Main trio and their interactions were intriguing to keep up with but I feel like it could've done a lot better with the equally-interesting side characters. A short cour of episodes (say about 10 episodes perhaps) might've addressed some of the few issues I'd with the movie.

Some solid use of subtleness as well to give off more impact and, in the process, allowing us to have a deeper feel for the Characters and their thought processes. Soundtracks and the very real life-ish shots throughout the movie were a treat too.

Credit scene with the pictures following the end of the movie gave a really nice sense of closure too, and that's always fantastic.

All in all, it was a very nice experience. Going to settle with a little strict 7/10 here.

I'm highly looking forward to Nakineko and Kimi dake ni Motetainda. coming in the future. Here's to hoping those two will be just as good, if not better.

8/10. Honestly not as good as I expected or hoped. Overall message was solid but the execution was lackluster. The romance especially was not good - it felt rushed and out of place. I think it would''ve been a lot better as a TV series.

I'm glad the credits confirmed they got married, at least. I hate wondering lol.

Also the listed movie length on MAL is incorrect. Right now it says 1 Hour and 55 minutes. The movie is only 1 hour and 47 minutes.

Good movie indeed though far from perfect. I don't remember when it was the last time I enjoyed an anime so much like this perhaps because that jaded guy reminded me so much of myself. I loved every scene where Aoi played the bass and the visuals of the movie seemed better (or at least had much more wallpaper worthy shots) even than in Tenki no ko and that is not an easy feat to accompolish.

I would have preferred if the magical elements of the story had been more restrained, like if Aoi had met and talked with the teenager Shinno only in a dreamlike state when she dozed off in the shrine building, and likewise the conversations between Shinno and Shinosuke had been more on the side of imagination and the subconscious, showing by visual metaphors how that burned-out guy’s more energetic, optimist and dreaming side was breaking out of the suppression and the oblivion of the mind when he returned home after years. It would have been better if at least it seemed like Shinnoksuke had come out of his crusty shell more on his own after a struggle with his old imagined self without the help of actual magic; even though there is the breaking out of the shrine scene that could be interpreted like that. It can be said that on the metaphorical level the magical elements of the movie made some sense. For example I loved that flying scene that was similar to lot of others in anime like in Spirited away or Weathering with you, when after breaking their shackles two teenagers clinging to each other fly freely in the vastness of sky (the sky that the „froglike” adults like Shinosuke watch only at the bottom of their respective wells) that represents all dreamed up possibilities of the world which they can see as teens but are forgotten as they reach adulthood and have their wings cut. That is why I liked Akane’s verse about the frog very very much (so much actually that I put it on my profile and meditated a lot on it), because on a metaphorical level it said that the frog (the adult self) could find meaning and happiness in its well in which it captivated itself even if it had forgotten about the vastness of possibilities and dreams that as a teenager could see in its future and started living like a prisoner in its achieved present. Akane’s aim and happiness, the blueness of her slit of sky that she was looking at, was of course Aoi herself (aoi means blue among other things). Shinnosuke on the other hand went to Tokyo to realise his dreams, to find the "promised" "paradise" which "Gandhara" represents in his recurrent theme song but without his "Eve" he lost the sight of his aim in the process and burned out. The well can represent of course not just a metaphorical but an actual place too, like the little town in which they were living and about that at the begining of the story Aoi said it was like a crater surrounded by walls (like a well), and in that case the vastness of the sea is the vastness of the world itself beyond the boundary of the little town. Shinnosuke tried to prove his worth and realize himself in that outer world while Akane decided that the fulfillment of her life could be found only here and not out there because her responsibilies binded her down. The moment when she become an adult, a frog living in its well, was when she had given up her dreams and chosen to look after her dear liitle sister.

I know my interpretation of „the frog at the bottom of the well” is a bit different from the original meaning of the phrase that comes from a chinese tale and according to which it means a person of limited experience and outlook, to whom their whole world is their little "well" and who doesn’t know about the depths and happiness of the sea (the outside world). But japanese love ambiguity and there are a lot of ambiguity and space for interpretation in Akane’s verse. If I go by what that tale is about it was actually Shinnosuke who was trying to break out of his well to reach the metaphorical sea but in the end created an other dark place for himself in which he had become trapped; and what Akane's poem actually ment was that she had accepted the limited experience of the world that her future held in that town but that didn’t make her unhappy since there was still the „blueness of the sky” (Aoi and her dreams) for her. In the present time of the story Aoi put the same questions to herself as Shinno did to himself and at the beginning her choice (leaving behind her town) had been the same as that of Shinnosuke but by the end of the story I suppose it changed. Even if it didn’t her perspective definitely did as it is showed by her last words.

The Shinno who left for Tokyo was bitter because Akane refused to go but she could not go because truck-kun killed their parents and she had to take care of her sister her sister does not realize what Akane sacrificed until she read the notebook Akane wrote and she did not realize the love Akane gave up until she saw her cry. It was the guitar Shino left behind named Akane that was tying Shino to that place
Glad they got back together and married in the end They all put their regrets behind them

Jesus christ, this movie was an absolute trainwreck. It was so messy, it seemed like it wanted to be a TV series and not a movie. There was so many moments where nothing was going on or it just felt like it was padding the runtime with scenes that had nothing to do with the plot. Yet, they had to resolve the story with a fucking montage???

The absolute worst part is following a god damned brooding bitch as the protag. She is just so so dull compared to the rest of the cast and essentially a side character of the plot! Would've been MUCH MUCH more bearable and outright better if Akane was the protag instead.

That people even put this on the same peddle as Anthem of the Heart, much less Weathering With You is laughable. Those movies at least had a god damned entertaining plot points and main characters. This one just squanders them in favor for an emo highschool girl being emo.

Well, if anything, this was an entertaining movie relating to dreams and regrets. Children, teenagers, and early adults tend to make plans for the long run, wishing to become someone important, envisioning success and happiness as they chase after their dreams, only for all that to come crashing down and the harsh reality to slap you in the face, realizing that the world isn't so accomodating, after all. When that happens, they got a few options, two of which include either giving up, becoming a bitter dull person like Shinnosuke, or keep trying, attempting to do what they can, their absolute best, to reach their goal.

I have to say, the interaction between the soul bounded Shiino and the shell of his former self Shinnosuke was quite intense. A confrontation with your future self that embodies the "what if" had Shiino decided to leave everything and go forward. It certainly felt like an interesting prospect. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the movie. I give it an 8/10. I am sure a lot of people would relate to this film.

Well, I was expecting an anime focused in a band and music (with a touch of drama, of course), but it was more about relationships.

I am still not used to these "just accept all the supernatural stuff" like Kimi no Na Wa.

It was nothing out of ordinary movie when it comes to plot/story, but it was still enjoyable and the characters were nice; the animation and the art as well.

7/10.

This movie was beautiful. The soundtrack was amazing. The feeling was so attachable and touchable. The meaning had so much depth beyond its limiter. And Aoi, sorry, as MC, you kept in behind, okay? Atleast you had no worries and regretful about your beloved one. Finally she learnt much from her sister regretness in youth. You still had that Tsugu, boy. Don't be sad! I guessed, thats it. No need much explanations. A solid end. Great impact in its closurement. This masterpiece really suited my 10/10 lists. No other reason. Thats my personally judgement. So, yeah, its obvious!

Yessss!!! Shinnosuke x Akane ship ended up together. The ending already hinted that their ship sailed but thanks for marriage scenes in the credit scene. It was a nice bonus and I'm really glad to see them getting married.

So basically Shinno(Younger self) in present time was a spirit of sort manifested by the guitar he and Akane bought together during their high school days. His goal was to make Shinnosuke(present self) and Akane end up together and they ended up together so he vanished after that.

Too bad for Aoi lol but I don't feel bad for her tbh cause her ship was never gonna sail anyway.

Nothing much happened so overall pretty fine movie. Not that great but not bad either.

Got lots of Anohana vibes from it since it was made by the same creators. As for the story it felt like nothing new. Spirit appears , love probs and disappear. Felt like a crappy version of anohana. The soundtracks were amazing as they were by Aimyon. But anyway I'm glad they showed Shinnosuke and Akane ended up together. To sum it up, it was disappointing for me since I was looking forward to it and hoping it would be gifting something like Anohana again. It's 5/10 for me.

Not trying to compare but it doesnt offer anything. Didn't hit the emotions like Anohana or have the rewatch value of Kimi no Nawa. It was good but I don't think I'll remember any scenes except when Shinno played his solo song infront of Akane. This is probably the standard for supernatural drama movies nowadays. They keep making these. It was a decent 7 for me I've seen a worse movie from last year

A solid watch but not as good as Anohana.

There were a few few plot points left unresolved, the ending was rushed and too whimsically magical, and there was a major misstep in my opinion in a major scene.

When Aoi was trying to pull Shinno out of the house he was stuck in and Shinnosuke saw the guitar (or was it a base) strings wavering, instead of him just standing there and then Aoi succeeding in pulling Shinno out, it would have been the perfect moment for Shinnosuke to make up his mind, settle his feelings, and cut the strings himself, thus freeing Shinno and signifying that he chooses Akane over being a musician.

It would have been great character development and would have worked better in the narrative, but in the end it seems like the movie just wanted to focus on the lead, Aoi.

Still a good movie though, just a little unfocused.

wow the art was great, some of the backgrounds looked so realistic. also LOVED the ED!

the young shinno is such a likeable character to me, i really loved his voice acting, the range was amazing yoshizawa ryou did a great job i wish he had more roles!

akane is such a great sister :')

really enjoyed this film. 3 standout scenes for me:

when akane brought the onigiri over & almost bumped into the young shinno
when the 2 shinnos met
when young shinno talked to akane underground during that landslide

i felt like the narrative could have been pushed further, it was pretty light-hearted, but i guess it was pretty subtle. not every narrative has to be so melodramatic & over the top. i didn't dislike the flying scene, it was symbolic to me. let's not talk about realism the premise is literally involves a spirit.

but i’ll probably remember over and over again

A touching movie. Thought it did a good job portraying many of the relationships, dreams, emotions, and obstacles we have while growing up and throughout life in general.

For whatever reason I was ok with the "living spirit trapped in a room" aspect of it, but once Shinno broke free and started flying, that was too much for me. Just didn't align with the rest of the movie at all. Definitely decreased my rating because of that.

Kind of disappointed we didn't get any clarity on Ao's future (music, love, etc.), But I can live with the unknown.

7/10 overall. Probably an 8/10 without the crazy flying jumping scene.

It's weird for a movie to lack focus to the extent that this one does (it's forgivable/expected in a TV series since you generally have much more time available to narrow things down). Is it about Shinno growing up? Aoi? Akane? All of them? What exactly do the Chika and Masatsugu subplots or supernatural elements add to this?

It's very messy and difficult to get invested in.

Which doesn't mean it's bad... but, well... to go with a music metaphor: You have to go into it expecting something more like a jam session rather than a proper concert.
