This was a good episode! Drama, a slight of mystery and a bunch of great characters... it had it all! I loved the technical part about tennis, it reminded me of my own tennis lessons when I was a kid. The animation was very well done!

So Maki is fully joining the boy's tennis team and they have a lot to improve. Running 20 laps around the school gave me Run With the Wind vibes :D Touma and Maki holding hands afterwards was cute. Well, I wonder what Maki's mom was trying to say to the dude (I guess it's her boyfriend?). That otaku girl is pretty troubled as well. Hmm and I really loved the scene with Maki and the guy who is probably gay and secretly in love with Touma. It was cute and I am glad the directors didn't rely on sterotypes for a change. Oh, and Maki wearing a girl's cap was precious! I hope there will be an OP too. Can't wait for next week!

Really liking the SoL in this. Especially the running 20 laps part. I like Maki's personality. He was thinking the same as I did in the first episode, upon seeing the boy's tennis team. There's really no way all of them could be that bad after playing a year. It didn't seem as if all of them took the tennis seriously, or perhaps they felt like they were being serious, but in reality, they didn't put in the effort. For example, as Touma explained the basics to Maki, the others were commenting, "Ohh~" "I forgot about that", etc. It's great that Maki's words fired the team up! With practice, especially having at least the basics down, there will be results, no matter how little.

So we find out that Maki's mother already filed for a restraining order, but it will take time for it to go through...unfortauntely the father already came by, slapped Maki, and took money :( I know he doesn't want to worry his mother since she's already so busy providing for the family, but he should've at least let his older brother know.

As for Mitsue, I'm interested in her. Why does she watch the boy's tennis club? Does she do it just so she can "look down" on them? Because people also look down on her? Or maybe it's some other reason. Whatever it is, I'm looking forward to finding out.

And of course, that beautiful ED. Praise Ebata!!!

I like that Maki provoke them so they make an effort to practice. He doesn't have enthusiasm in sports at first but he seems serious about it.

Hmmm.. there's BL?

I love the ED song especially the video!!! so hilarious <3

It's only been two episodes, how is this show so good?!

The characters all feel super genuine and fun to watch, especially in how they interact with each other. During the laps there was this one "oh damn" moment when they had the background move along with the characters, and the ED! Oh my god, not only is everyone animated, everyone is animated differently and it adds so much personality. That is, like, the coolest thing I've seen all month.

Ah disgusting bullies.
I like how Maki is openminded.
Yuta being gay for Shinjou and it being accepted naturally by Maki was cool.
Maki told the club members (minus Shingou) good, was thinking the same.
I don't really like the gloomy girl. And just to be clear it's not her gloominess, her attitude itself has issues. Hope she gets character development.
The ED song is very nice, like the dance moves esp. Shingou, Yuta and then student council president's.
And I see the hypocrisy in the scores of this episode, the homophobes ain't fooling no one. Hah.

Good episode and things r progressing well so far. The characters r all interesting thou that black hair girl is kinda annoying. Also the only thing I'm disliking about this series so far is the family drama.

Ik family drama is not many people's cup of tea but it is essential for the character building in this series so it has depth.

For example you can tell that all Maki's attitudes, the way he speaks with his teammates in order to achieve victory is all because of the family drama he suffered.

W/o that aspect, Maki would just be plain character that has insane talent and nothing more.

Well, I am not a fan of the BL, it is more, I have dropped many anime for that, but I must admit that the plot of the anime is good and entertaining, I also do not think that the anime focuses only on that. It is a story of effort, dedication and improvement focused on the members of the Soft Tennis club and that is what interests me, the rest is left aside. This sport will be like an exit to their problems, something that will unite them. I hope this anime does not disappoint, because for the moment it looks good.

Maki is a hairless character on the tongue, he says what he thinks without hesitation, and that seems great to me.

Ps: What's up with the ED? Hahaha.

This anime is too good to be true. A legit queer character in a sports anime?! Now I don't know who to ship Toma with!

Also I'm scared that something tragic is going to happen. A lot of dark undertones.

I'll be really excited if the writers handle this gay kid without giving him a tragic ending or a romance. Just have it be a sweet one-sided crush like you usually see between the athletes and the female manager in sports anime.

Uh, no. I'd rather see his feelings returned or at least acknowledged. There's always been that "one gay character with unrequited love" trope in a ton of anime. If you can show me an anime that's not BL where a gay character was successful in romance, I'd love to watch it.

I'm just worried they're not going to have space for a proper romance arc, and they're middle schoolers, so a first crush is sort of exciting enough without acting on it. You're right, though, about the gay side character with a crush on a main character being cliched.

I don't expect it to be an arc but I'm just relieved that so far 1 of the 2 main characters didn't react in disgust or make a joke out of it. Now here's hoping he doesn't die and finds happiness whether his feelings get returned or not. Whenever I've seen feelings actually returned, one of them always dies (Iron-Blooded Orphans, 07-Ghost, etc. so I don't spoil other series).

Yeah, the gay dude with the one side homo for the main character is such a trite thing by now, no idea why everyone is losing their mind.

I think what I was trying to say is that having him be accepted by the club as he is without doing a whole romance thing would be nice and age appropriate, but I'm never opposed to romance. I'm happy if he gets to be happy.

I mean, there's tons of series of straight middle schoolers and high schoolers dating and it's age appropriate?¿ Not asking for anything sexual. Just the typical dating, holding hands and sometimes kiss scenes. I know you're probably not thinking this way but a lot of uneducated people tend to assume that being gay is automatically something perverse/sexual when they're just like any other straight kid who has a crush.

Why a gay kid has to have a reason for being gay and being there? Nobody asks "what's the point of all these heterosexual characters". LGBT peope exist and are a part of society. There don't need to be a point.

Did you not read my other posts? I have no issue with the possibility that he's gay, the questions is that what purpose does it serve the overall story? The same goes for any romance.

B. The show obviously strives to be a human drama more than purely a sport anime. The point is, being different is struggle. Everyone who doesn't fit into specific norms established by society, faces prejudice, hate and rejection. He is one of the kids who are different, and is being bullied by other kids simply for who he is. The reason for that happens to be his sexual orientation. Much like for the otaku girl it happens to be her hobby and gloomy appearance. Much like Maki was ridiculed for merely wearing a visor.

Okay, so what's you point? Are you saying that I shouldn't be concerned with this at all and that I should just go with it? Sorry, but you're going to have to give me a better reason than that.

Romance, along with any other subplot, has a bad habit of overshadowing what the overall story was originally about. . There's nothing wrong with having a subplot or two, but as a writer you have to be careful not to focus too much on those subplots otherwise it ends up doing more harm than good to your overall story. It's for this reason why I don't the big love story in Titanic. It virtually served no purpose, made me dislike the two main characters even more, and it was only done to get the audience emotionally involved. The same could potentially happen here.

Right now I have no reason to care about the whole gay thing. I do, however, want to know why the otaku girl has such attitude problem and how it's going to effect the others in the future.

I forgot to mention that I loved the animation, soundtrack, voice acting, pacing, plot etc. of this series so far. I have a lot of series to watch this season so I had to binge watch all three episodes in the same day. I'm doing the same for Ahiru no Sora and Mugen no Juunin. I've just been so stressed with work and life in general, procrastinating and wasting my life that I forgot the feeling of watching a new series that brings me happiness, intrigue, tears, etc.

Mitsue seems like the type of person who thinks everyone is a loser but in reality, she's a loser too if we go by her standards. She looks down on others because others look down on her.

The manager was really gay after all, poor guy subjected to bullying but the target of his affections stood up for him. I wonder what kind of past Toma had since those bullies got scared of him.

Also Maki, damn, he's tough and doesn't hold back. He struck a nerve and pushed everyone to practice. He's a natural athlete.

I am really not liking this mopey emo black haired chick, but I am sure she has some sort of twisted past which makes the unreasonable way she views things understandable.

Love how there is a gay character!

I also wonder why Maki didn't report his father for stealing and hitting him to the police? There was evidence that he was at the apartment via the footprint, and possibly fingerprints... Also why not tell his mother? Now that he knows where they live, it could be dangerous for them... Ah well, it wouldn't be all dramatic if characters did reasonable, logical, common-sense things all the time I suppose.

I love the music, very relaxing and fits the animation very well.

Also, theres a bit of homophobia in this thread. I guess that's why we don't see LGBT themes very often in anime. Oh well, bigots are horrible scum, but at least their kind is rapidly dwindling and getting called out and shamed for the hateful human trash that they are.

Fantastic episode. Maki is an interesting guy. I'm pleasantly surprised at his personality. He's a good and responsible boy but he does have a sharp tongue and be very blunt. Needless to say, it was an effective method to fire up the team.

So the mother already filed a restraining order and the father already found them anyway. This is heartbreaking.

Animation is good. I don't think people appreciate enough the hard work put into that dance sequence with the two teachers not in sync with each other. That takes a lot of skill to do.

There's also a gay character. Mitsue is also an interesting girl. I wonder how she'll play into the story? I mean she can't possibly be just a random character who likes Maki right?

I love how realistic this anime is, and how it touches on domestic abuse and bullying. It’s not like they’re adding those plot points for dramatic effect. These are experiences that real people have, and it could happen to anyone, even some middle school boys.

And for the characters to accept Yuta so easily made me so happy 🥹 you don’t see that very often outside of BL. A lot of people in this thread seemed to wonder why they added a gay character. (Obviously, it’s been years now, so there’s no reason for me to reply to them.) If a character’s sexual/romantic orientation is disclosed, it could of course mean that something will happen in regards to this (romance or more bullying for example), but it can also be because they just wanted the realism. Fun fact: gay people exist. And they’ll all have different reactions and experiences in life. Like how Yuta was bullied by some and accepted by others. I really appreciate the writers for adding this to the story. (As for Maki and Togo holding hands, closeness in Japan is normal, so the other students probably didn’t think anything other than “they’re just good friends.” But if they did any more than that, well, they’d get mixed reactions.)

Aside from all that (sorry it was a lot), it was cool to see the boys practice soft tennis at the end. I’ve played regular tennis, but I didn’t know anything about soft tennis until now. Maki’s already so good, and when he said, “You can’t get results without effort,” he was speaking facts. I wonder how much they’ll be able to show us in one season. I wish it wasn’t an original :(

Also, the ED is amazing!
