That was one weird finale, especially the part with Kenta. It was still pretty alright. And I liked the bit at the end where they said what the characters are doing after the show, it was really cheesy like in American movies.

Overall the show was fun. It was pretty light, and despite having a few deaths of supporting character, it still felt pretty light. Heck, there was a huge crowd watching the final battle as if it was a show haha. The character interaction was pretty fun, and I really liked Remy as a character. The movie sequel should be mostly about her, so I'm looking forward to it.

So Kenta is a god now? or Jodie Foster from Contact lol.

Overall GoShogun is fine. It's certainly uninspired feeling like a show that was made in the 70's despite coming out in 1981. Nothing about the show is amazing but nothing about it was bad. The Main Opening is a total classic and I like the design of GoShogun. There is also some sumptuous art in this series, the Good Thunder looks incredible and the Father computer also looked amazing.

Only thing that got on my nerves alittle was the early Kenta and 'Machines are my friends' stuff. Which in fairness the show has a payoff for so I can't critique it too much but for a Giant Robot show this seemed pretty counter productive. I mean what Machines fight and go all out is kinda the point of these shows. But again the show does give us a decent pay off for Kenta and that stance but in the moment when he's crying or having nightmares about destroying machines it was pretty annoying and silly.

I'm hopeful the movie I enjoy more, from what I've seen of it it should be alittle more ambitious and less paint by numbers like the show was.

So, fighting against the money loving, environment destroying world-order, Kenta becomes basically a Newtype and befriends not only machines but even mystical beings that commune with nature, sparking revolution. And of course there is religious imagery, with GoShogun being referred to and apparently worshiped as a god, one with a long tradition in art supposedly, and the 'crucifixion' of the journalist Isabel. That Beamler's destructive potential diminishes overtime and is set to improve at fixed points in time along with Kenta's growth like some sort of coming of age ceremony, and GoShogun's ability to make machines aware of their suffering, as it were, all makes for a strong theme of gradual emancipation in order for some sort of human 'compatibility' with some greater, natural force.

This is some subversive shit, with a pretty strong, as far as I can tell, anti-capitalist/globalist bent. The bad guys are often associated with big money international enterprises like Disney parks and Hollywood film productions and its headquarters is the fucking World Bank for crying out loud. Remy's lover Francis is engulfed in flames along with his paintings as punishment for basing his value as an artist in terms of money. The irony isn't lost on me that it is Docooga itself, its resident 'aesthete' in particular, that kills him. It's also interesting that Docooga uses robotic skeletons as its soldiers.

Overall a pretty boring watch and sometimes hard to tell where the self-awareness ended and the cliches began. It's almost deliberate 'sexism' is one example of that. I don't even think I need to comment on the final episode, lol, it speaks for itself.

Were Japanese kids at the time enjoying this somewhat subtle, dry humor? I imagine it was cut short given the 26 episode length and the 'countdown' to the end that the characters were referring to. Time itself seems to play a disproportionate role in the story It doesn't 'feel' like any super robot show I've ever seen that's for sure.
