I felt sad for Thors' death, but I felt admiration much more than sadness. The way he stood up even though multiple arrows were shot at him at the same time, and the way he embraced his death withouth fear but with prowess. Really impressive. 9.5/10 for this eps.

Such an amazing episode...it was so intense. Can't wait to see the next episode. I love the art style of this anime. When Thors died I cried my eyes out but at the same time I felt proud. Thors had to do what he did to protect everyone. Poor Thorfinn saw his dad die right in front of him.

It is unheard of that there is an anime like this today, an anime so pure and beautiful where all effort and focus is put on the development of the story and characters instead of trying to attract morbid or fanservice, because even in other supposedly serious anime fail because of mindless dialogues and a stupid script.

Finally they fit the synopsis of the anime into one episode. Also I love how both groups have to saceifice something to gain balance, also Thors you are a true warrior and a great father. This is great nothing to say more.

intense. Not much else to say.

Rip Thorrs, can't wait for the next episode to see where Thorfin's development goes.

We don't know what kind of people we truly are until the moment before our deaths.
As death comes to embrace you, you will realise what you are.
That's what death is, don't you think?

Thors' death in the Anime was more emotional than in the manga. That's just my opinion. The music, his solemn voice, etc. added to that effect.

You can tell from Askeladd's expression and reaction that he disapproved Bjorn's actions. Fucking Bjorn.

Thors is able to intimidate anyone, even Bjorn, despite being at the brink of death. Contender for father of year.

I knew the old blond guy was a fan favourite character, so I had been wondering how on earth would people like someone who kills the protagonist's loved one. Now I get it. Kind of. He is already my favourite character so far.

The animation was quite breathtaking in some parts.

Till last episode, this anime was just good enough, but this episode, I really liked it. Finally, I found another enjoyable anime this season. Most—this season—were quite bad that I dropped a lot of them.

Cool fighting scenes! Thors died the way he wanted, he knew that eventually they would kill him, so at least he saved the village and his son.
I want to see what's going to happen with his son now, maybe some of the pirates will give him food, I mean how is he going to survive now on that boat alone?
Looking forward to see the actual story this was just the introduction to his character and how he became who he is.

Another great episode, very emotional! The fight scene was pretty cool, if a little slow.

I haven't read the manga, so I'm intrigued to see exactly how Thorfinn gets along with Askeladd and his pirates after they killed Thors.

Trolls aside, this was everything I thought it'd be and more. Ignore the lost causes and nonsensical arguments. This anime is not for them. Maybe they'd enjoy Dr. Plot Device or Shounen Firefighter. Anyways, I have a question and I'm not sure if this is meant to be a big reveal or not, but is Askeladd really a Roman? His armor which Thorfinn pointed out was different. And he swore on his ancestor Artorius, which meant more to him than his oath on his father, Olaf.

dude thorfinn is just a kid do you really think he'll be able to brush aside his FATHER'S DEATH just like that. I thought they did a excellent job portraying a child's mentality after the death of a relative. Distraught yet exasperated with murder plaguing his mind. Simply beautiful

Really nice sakuga but it's ridiculous to have no-kill policy as a medieval Viking. It doesn't even make up for an interestingly tragic character because we don't get to see how his philosophy made sense to him except for some generic "killing breeds more killings" argument. The thing is our moral sentiment evolves in history. We now think killing a person is such a big deal because we have established powerful institutions that help us going about our daily life without having to kill any one. We now have a higher moral bar than the medieval because it has become much easier for us to not to kill thanks to all the modernisation that took centuries to realise. To think a Viking would feel the same kind of horror and remorse over killing a person is simply a naive way to project our sense of morality to historical people who lived a very different life.

And you know why I love AoT now 'cuz its ethics is deeply rooted in its material life. They are not like modern people being transported into an isekai with titans.

Damn that was an epic fight. I knew it was going to happen but seeing Thors' death was really sad, what a man he was.

I think the part where everyone stopped laughing after seeing the hateful look in Thorfinn's eyes was a really nice touch. Thorfinn's VA did a fantastic job portraying the anguish, despair and hatred he feels after his father's unfair death.

Askeladd is an intriguing character, it is obvious that there's more to him than he lets on. I hope we manage to understand him better within the course of the story!

I can tell you that your intuitions are in the right direction but I don't want to spoil you since everything that regards Askalad is related to the final climax of the series.

You are right but Thors is dead, and he would have died even if he had not been a pacifist extremist ( and as a young man he was a piece of shit that did not make problems to kill ) , the manga is not yet finished but knowing the true story of the saga (historical) and based on certain comparisons between characters, I can tell you that from the war one cannot can escape, not even in the promised land Vinland .

I think I can finally understand the felling of hate towards Eren on SNK for being a "annoying edgy MC", because that's definitely what I am felling for Thorfinn (even though I still can't understand why people think Eren can be annoying, considering he pushes the plot foward). Anyway, this is actually a good thing since the main "marketing" of the show is his character development.

I honestly can't find any flaw in this start, and if it keep this up, adding tension on the next arc, I can give it a 9 easilly

Why is it ridiculous? "Killing is bad" is not something humans first thought of in last few centuries. It's true that killing was lot more accepted in their society, but Scandinavians weren't a hive mind. There's nothing stopping an individual Viking to develop his own moral compass and figure out that constantly robbing people their lives might be a bad thing.

It would be problem if their whole society had similar mindset to Thor's, but it doesn't. Story clearly portrays Thors as an anomaly, a man in who knows how many thousands. The show even tries to portray how big of a contrast there is between Thors and the rest.

I just feel really bad for all the edge-lords/complainers on here that have no idea what they're getting into by watching this show... your loss-

Whenever the ED starts playing I get goosebumps, just the thought of losing one of your parents and knowing that no matter who is to blame for it- and that no matter what you do, you can never bring them back.
The thought that I will at one point lose one or both of my parents just breaks me. Thanks for that ED...

Tremendous episode! It was full of emotion, action, and finally, of sadness. The animation and the soundtrack made this episode even better. Wit Studio did it again 👏.
Wow! Thors was a truly admirable and incredible man, faithful to his ideals until the end. He has all my respect. Without a doubt, this is one of the best season anime, and Thors one of the best characters I've seen. It is a pity that it will last so little, we took a great character, but, well, that's the way things are and everything is part of this great story.
R.I.P Thors, and a minute of silence for that great man, husband and father.
He died like a warrior, with honor until the end.

Now with the death of his father, the seed of revenge has been planted in Thorfin's heart. The story of Thors, the Troll of Jom, the great warrior, is over, and the story of Thorfin begins. From this point, he will stop being a simple child.

"A true warrior does not need a sword."

The 3 week wait is worth it all, this episode is just phenomenal.

Askeladd already knew that Thors the Troll of Jom will not be an easy opponent, even with the duel that Thors ultimately won the battle but lost the War. At least the Warrior's path was given respect to the very end. Thors allowed dignity, even though Askeladd had to resort to underhand tactics to take his head, back to both his own village people and Askeladd and his mercenary of pirates, to business as usual.

And the death of Thors, obvious red flag to boot.
RIP to the family man, now the son Thorfinn has a great deal of trouble to defeat Askeladd (which isn't the true enemy).

Volume 1 of the manga is done, and I can say that the anime is doing a wholesome amount of justice, going and beyond to the manga adaptation.

No, no, no. AOTY will go to My Hero Academia because Crunchylawl says so.

Till now my AOTY ranking:
1. SnK s03 part II (the clear favourite)
2. Mob Psycho 100 s02
3/4. 7DS part 3 (if adapted well because it contains maybe fight of the year)
4/3. Vinland Saga
5. Kimitsu no Yaiba
6. BnHA s04 (let's see what bones do)

bro, trust me if WIT Studios adapt Vinland saga properly and Accurately it will be remembered as one of the bests as the story is intricate with characters who heavily embody their ideologies, the main cast in Vinland saga have s a abundance of metaphorical meaning behind them possibly rivaling Hunter x hunter just give them Time

These first 4 episodes of Vinland Saga have been great. This is hardly surprising given Wit Studio's back catalog but I do have some minor gripes. Some of the action sequences, involving crazy leaps into the air, while fun to watch are too far fetched for what this shows setting is or at least what I thought it was. Thors is also far too overpowered a character but that is hardly an issue now.

Thors' philosophy while not developed deeply is basically parallel to Rurouni Kenshin's, which is interesting, I wish we had spent just a little more time with his backstory. Having a philosophy like that in a time period like that was always going to spell death.

Overall, I am excited for the rest of the series but I also think the show is a bit over-hyped.

- Astounding OST, animation, and cinematography. Props to the brilliant voice actors.
- Characters that feel human, they even nailed how a 6 year old should act.
- Askeladd vs Thors felt tense, it had consequences, great choreography, and principles put to the test.
- Faithful and and actually better than the source material (for this part).
I know what would happen as I've read the manga, yet it still made me sad.
Thors is a good man, his philosophy and thinking led him to the best possible outcome. Sacrificing himself by impressing Askeladd so the others are left unharmed. Well, except Ari, he got what he deserved. Fighting all out would most likely lead to death.
This anime is objectively at least an 8/10 in terms of quality, anything lower is very much subjective.
This is the point where the story changes drastically, looking forward to what they can do in the next episode as it is an anime original!

This show is what is what keeps me breathing by the air of anime industry and visually I can somewhat feel the 2019'ness or simply being up with the times. As I was absent I had no prejudices but even from the opening itself it was clear that Thors is dying, whole month to prepare if one is invested to the length of overthinking it before sleep etc., though I am glad that it was executed only 4 episodes in (blind how it is in manga case but content-wise it should be parallel) and Thors got his moral portrait drawn pretty clearly in present (because it could have been dragged out with help of dem repeating flashbacks) and I'm intrigued how Thorfinn will be swarming around it since at the moment they seem like complete opposites of each other and simple blood relation/father figure is his current life drive - his intent is revenge and what now at most feels like a revenge story should probably turn out to quenching of his thirst of revenge. Askeladd is not dying for sure and I hope Thorfinn learned with his eyes that personal 'ethics' are useless in battlefield.

Imagine thinking this is just a generic revenge story LUL.

People have already talked about the archers, but what about the village back home? Were there not orders to kill Thors by the Jomsvikings after he deserted 15 years ago? What's stopping them from destroying the entire village if Thors had survived here? He knew he was a dead man, but by sacrificing his life he gets the maximum value out of it. And sure, we all know Thors could've easily killed everyone there, if he wanted to sacrifice his philosophy and the beliefs he's been trying to instill into Thorfinn, but there's just no way they're surviving the archers. And jumping into the water certainly isn't going to do anything.

Damn... damn, it was sad. Just very sad. :( Thors died like a hero. He was not defeated. He traded his own life for lifes of those who were with him and his last order was secure the village's future by showing his corpse to Jomsvikings' warchief as a proof that he didn't flee from war.

The battle sequence was elite. No need to say more about it. Effects, tension, smooth animation, realism. I rarely see that kind of moments in the first episodes of an anime. Seeing so many sasuga moments up until now was delightful to watch.

Thorfinn didn't do anything that got his dad killed, he was just standing there with rest watching. Thors was dead as soon as he arrived at Faroe islands and nothing would have changed that.
Also, his pacifism is what actually saved everyone in his crew. Otherwise everyone would have been sold as slaves.
