The official website of Studio Ghibli announced on Friday that director Isao Takahata died on Thursday, April 5 at 1:19 a.m. in a Tokyo hospital due to lung cancer. He was 82 years old.

The funeral will be held among family and friends. Toshio Suzuki, after discussing with Hayao Miyazaki, decided to hold a grand memorial meeting for him on May 15, to honor him as an influential member of Studio Ghibli.

Takahata entered Toei Douga, later known as Toei Animation since 1998, in 1959 after graduating from The University of Tokyo in French literature. His directorial debut was Taiyou no Ouji: Horus no Daibouken, which premiered in 1968. Before leaving Toei Douga, he also directed Alps no Shoujo Heidi, Akage no Anne TV anime and movie, Haha wo Tazunete Sanzenri, and more. He co-founded Studio Ghibli with Miyazaki in 1985 and produced many anime movies such as Hotaru no Haka, Omoide Poroporo, and Kaguya-hime no Monogatari. He was awarded Medal with Yellow Ribbon in 1998, Honorary Lifetime Achievement Award at Annecy International Animated Film Festival in 2014, and Order of Arts and Letters in 2015 in France.

The world has lost one of the most brilliant minds of the animation industry. Isao Takahata showed the world that animations doesn't need fantasy to work, that they can portray real life just as live-action films do and even better. That's what he beautifully brings in his works: life, with all its happiness and unhappiness.

Many of his works, such as Heidi, Anne of Green Gables, Grave of the Fireflies, Only Yesterday and The Tale of Princess Kaguya, not only influenced the anime industry but also influenced the lives of many people who were blessed by the mastery of this incredible director. And if it wasn't for him, Studio Ghibli wouldn't exist. The world would be a much sadder place.

Rest in peace, Takahata-san. Your legacy will never be forgotten.

Akage no Anne and Only Yesterday both had a profound and simply inexpressible influence on me, I highly recommend watching them and his other works like Kaguya-hime as well. The legacy he has left behind is beyond remarkable.

A true master of the medium and one of the industry’s greatest. Rest in peace, and thank you for your masterful work.

THe first news I read this morning. At first, I didn't believe it.

PS: <I had some ugly thought right after learning about it. "How much louder will be Miyazaki's death news be?" (yes, I dislike how more famous one s compared to the other)

Worst news since Kouji Wada's death, probably worse. Japan has lost one of its greatest treasure. The thing that truly amazes me most is that he was always trying to keep improving, even until his latest masterpiece Kaguya-hime. He was a model professional and a great person. Deep condolences for the family. Rest in peace legend. And please stay healthy Miyazaki.
