| THIS IS A MANGA ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING BEYOND THIS CHAPTER. ---------------------------------------- It feels like this was the chapter that Masugtisune/Kawazu-ku (I guess its two people) have been wanted to write this entire manga. The beginning of the chapter is easily one of the top moments in all the manga that I have ever read. Riz recites the most famous part of Dante's Inferno, the inscription on the gates of hell that Dante reads at the beginning of Canto III. While Riz is doing this, we see all the various tragic experiences she has faced while searching for her light. When Riz is finished, she opens the gate to hell to suck both Lapin and herself through. This drastic action saves Tart from what is perhaps the one magic girl she can't defeat. This move explains all the weird aspects of Riz. Her power was extremely sinister and dark when compared to Tarts, and seemed weird for Tart's best companion to have. Her life showed that actually was an unintended force for darkness by causing various girls to accept the curse of being a magic girl. Her fate of going to hell is oddly appropriate, even though she has done some much to help Tart. Regardless, it was an extremely powerful moment and easily the best sacrifice in all the Puella Magi works. My biggest issue with this chapter was the handling of the quote from Dante's inferno. It was a crappy translation, and I'm confident the translator just translated the lines from Japanese as opposed to using the direct translations from Italian. The problem is that Dante's Inferno is poetry, so the lines need to be treated as such. This translation did not. To given an example, the first three lines should start with "Through me." The gate is the focus in those lines, so that's why it should be put first to signal its importance. This translation took a more grammatically correct stance, but poetry will abandon grammar in order to make a point. The only line that was right was "abandon all hope", just because that line is known so well by itself. Still, that line felt awkward considering the "ye" doesn't really mesh with the word choice of the previous lines. |
