I can almost guarantee you that it will get axed. No Shounen Jump manga that got 7.09 rating or below on MAL ever survived in Jump. You may really like U19 but the rating shows that the majority doesn't like it. In the end what counts is the popularity of the manga and if the fanbase of the manga is too small, it gets axed.
It's only reasonable to axe a series that is unpopular. Yes, it may get better in the future. But even if a series gets better, most people who already dropped the series won't ever find out that it improved. Then there are people who dropped it because they didn't like the premise at all and most of them wouldn't pick it up again even if it improved. That way, even if the series itself improves from now on, it won't get much more popular.
Tbh, I may sound biased because I don't really like the series. But that's not because I dislike the premise, I dislike the fact that the author introduces supernatural powers in the setting. It could've been a really good series if it wasn't about supernatural powers but rather trying to overthrow the adult party on another way. Idk, starting some kind of revolution or sth like that. Something with more mind games similar to Death Note and Yakusoku no Neverland. Supernatural powers just don't suit the premise of the manga.
I can tell when a manga has good writing and U19 definitely isn't well enough written to survive in Jump. Tbh, from the new series, it probably has the worst story writing. I only read the first chapter of Poro, so I can't really say that much about it. All I can say is that the others are overall better written.
I can even tell you why. U19 is lacking sth that all the other new manga have: Comedy.
Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai has well written characters and good comedy. I can definitely tell that this author has experience at making characters.
Poro is all about Comedy, the first chapter was ok, I guess. It may be funny for some people, for others it isn't. Tbh, I don't really see Poro surviving either.
Hungry Marie has great comedy as well, especially chapter 1 and chapter 5. The characters are really well written as well because the author is experienced at it. Chapter 2-4 were weak, but that's just because the pacing was too slow and the author didn't really introduce new characters at all. It still has great potential if a few new well written characters are introduced.
Dr. Stone has really good comedy and well written characters as well.
The same applies to Robot x Laserbeam as well.
U19 on the other hand lacks comedy completely. That doesn't mean a manga without comedy is bad. Yakusoku no Neverland is probably the best example of a great manga without comedy. But Neverland does all things right. It creates tension, makes us believe things only to turn everything around with a plot twist one chapter later. The characters may not appear to be well written at the start but the authors do things what I like to call the "Oda way". They make the readers like the characters through a well written story. And they not only make us like them, but also care for them. There's always tension, we don't know what happens next and the next chapter might turn everything around again.
What U19 does good is that it makes readers who experienced being seperated from someone they love see themselves in the MC and the girl he got seperated from. However, there's no tension (at least for me), no desire to know what will happen next and no good written plot twists so far.
The expulsion in chapter 7 seemed totally forced. I mean why should the other teachers rather believe the students than the teacher. That makes no sense at all. The author tells us that the adult party basically dictates the country and is totally strict to children to make them into good adults, yet the teachers rather believe their students than other adults. They rather believe students who could possibly be D rank and have reasons to go against the adult party than an adult who has no reason to go against the adult party. Plus they didn't even have any proof of the teacher sexually abusing the student. The other teachers didn't even consider that the students could've tied up the other student. The accused teacher didn't even tell them that MC punched him.
This is a prime example of a bad written and forced plot twist. Something like this only decreases the surviving chances even more. |
