Well that was better than expected, and felt pretty uncommon in the anime landscape

“Read as little as possible of critical or aesthetic works. They are either products of a close-minded spirit, petrified and devoid of meaning in their lifeless hardening, or clever verbal games [...]. Works of art are of an infinite solitude; nothing is worse than criticism for approaching them. Only love can grasp them, keep them, be just toward them. Always give precedence to your own feeling against these analyses, these reviews, these introductions. [...] You must let every impression, every seed of feeling, ripen within you, in the dark, in the inexpressible, in the unconscious, those regions closed to understanding. Wait with humility and patience for the hour of the birth of a new clarity. Art demands of its faithful followers as much as of its creators.”
— RAINER-MARIA Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet (letter dated April 23, 1903).

A nice supernatural tale about immortality's curse. Interesting rendering of this manga's part with fitting music from the great Kawai Kenji.

Enjoyment: 4/5
Score: 7/10

Good ova it's basically the same as the anime version with some minor change and of course with the beautiful 90's art style

An OVA very devalued and belittled, because in 50 minutes you can find a great plot, intensity, horror, turns in the plots and a cool mystery, and everything treated with seriousness but with a bit comical points..... If I have to write a negative point, it could have developed more, even the characters!...

....and the best is that it could have a spin-off, prequel or sequel depending on the point of view!!!

8/10 for me!

This was a nice little OVA. I haven't read the manga yet though I'd love too, so there was plenty of story and details missing from it, but because it was a little side story of Mana and Yuta's adventure, it was short and concise. It was really creepy and eerie. I'm going to check out the 1993 OVA, Mermaid's Scar, and then move on to the newer series. This was a good start so far

Almost exactly 30 years ago, this OVA was released and it still is pretty interesting.

If I remember correctly, the story was also used in the later TV Series, so you could say this serves as a pilot movie.

According to my new scoring system starting at 6...
that's +1 for setting
and +1 for the well done and surprising end
+1 well its rumiko so I liked the storytelling and since its a pilot movie
Animationwise it was a bit grim so no bonus here, giving this 9/10 or a A (compared to movies from the same time)

Defenitely a must watch if you visit the year of 1991.
Trying to watch all available anime series so you won't have to anymore, the list of anime I can recommend is still in progress, tho

Damn, that was a pretty awesome OVA. I loved Laughing Target so I loved this too. I wish there were more of these horror anime originally written by Rumiko Takahashi.

The early 90's animation and music are just amazing and I doubt the 2003 TV series will be as good as this aesthetically.

My only real complaint about this was that Yuta and Mana were kind of shallow characters even though they were clearly meant to be the main characters.

This was a very self-contained story so I wonder what the sequel Mermaid's Scar is about? I guess I'll find out soon.

Great episode, it was really a fascinating story, the truly main character is Towa,
The ending was sad (I wonder if that mermaid who appeared in the sea is Towa ?), that scene when the mermaid suddenly attacked Towa caught me off guard, it's rare to see a good horror OVA,
I'll give it a 9, too bad the story wasn't developed enough, now to the Mermaid's Scar.

It’s time to ditch the text file.
