To be the first anime in history, has good details in the animation.

The way he kicks him, it was funny.

Pretty damn impressive to see they've already been experimenting with animation since 1917! Quite funny how everything evolved and pretty perfect to watch this on the first day of 2017!

Wow 100 years not bad for something made a full century ago.

Kind of interesting how the plot reflected the times it was made in, you see at the time Japan was trying to modernize and emulate the european empires and thus doing away with a lot of traditional feudal stuff like samurai, so this could be seen mocking the old outdated stuff like the samurai.

By the way if any of you are interested in other old anime like this there's a whole site dedicated to archiving them.

Back when anime was still good, that was quite charming.

That was good, I guess he and his sword were the dull ones especially him. Hell, even a blind man got some.

I bet he blamed it on the sword. Overall it had a good animation, the only things it didn't have was the sound and a perfect dialogue.

This was pretty funny - a farce of the samurai ruling class. The animation was pretty cool, sort of like stop-motion in the way everything moved.

If I were him I would demand my money back and what is wrong with his eyes?

Also is this film completely silent and not even music? Still nice to see old animation regardless of what country they are from!

I've seen this 4 times already, Not bad for a 1917 movie.

His eyes still trips me over, but overall was decent. Kudos to the true Waifu Kouchi Sama~

I'm pretty certain this doesn't have audio as the first movie that had audio was released 10 years later (1927) or some time around that.

Actually the animation is pretty good for 1917, at first I wasn't sure if I should watch it but it really was better then I thought it'll be!

Also it was kinda funny. Probably it would be better if there was sound and conversation.

But still they did a good job!

One of the most different shows that I have consumed, of course, is an archaeological content, everything contained in Namakura is based on an innovation of Japanese art as a whole. A symbolic anime, for sure.

This was a bit hard to watch due to the complete lack of sounds which is understandable.

Also I'm pretty sure the eye effects weren't intentional but were due to limitations. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes and no there's one before but it's a 3-second animation of a boy writing something then turning back and saluting by removing his hat, this is the first anime with a sort of story. Think it like the difference between "Arrival of the train" and "Trip to the moon"

Very interesting anyway, especially how they implemented an historical, gruesome and cruel norm of the "kiri-sute gomen" and of the "Tsujigiri", that gave samurai the right on life or death over peasants, and ridiculed it, making it the pun of the episode. It's what Tezuka will do after with manga, recovering important cultural aspect of historical Japan but at the same time problematizing them. It's inteersting to see especially considering after this and until 1945 it will all be "GLORY TO IMPERIAL JAPAN!!11!!1!"

P.S. You'll find it here: https://animation.filmarchives.jp/en/works/view/100183
P.P.S. I cannot comprehend how someone could have interest in watching an animated movie from 1917 and rate it so low. What the fuck were you even expecting? Why are you watching it in the first place?

Quite entertaining for a 100-year-old animation. This must have been amazing to watch at the time, though no doubt some people wanted more CGI (CalliGraphy Ink).

Charming (both in artstyle and plot) and entertaining, with a quality quite understandably being corresponding to the technology of the era.

It's also interesting to think that this samurai anime was made in a time where many former samurai were actually still alive, even if old men.

That was interesting. I think it was nicely animated for its time. If I was watching that back then as a kid I'd be amazed for sure!

Anyway, it seemed like they were mocking the Samurai in that story. I guess the person who made that anime didn't like the Bakufu era.

For being the earliest surviving anime with a fleshed out storyline it really holds its own against even Heisei and Reiwa era anime.

This has phenomenal historical value, it's the reason why we have anime today so for that value alone I will give this a 10/10.
Its an important cornerstone of japanese media and I think everyone should watch it just to imagine how even a 100 or so years ago, someone managed to make this even though back then there was no notion of animation.
Truly fantastic.

The joke was going to be very obvious from the start, but this really could've done with more dialogue anyway, especially when the samurai was conversing with the blacksmith. Aside from the samurai being a laughing stock, this didn't have much going for it.
