Nanako should have at least told her to stop being so crazy before forgiving her.

It's hard to tell someone to stop being crazy. Because they might i don't know... flip a table... or bite your ear off?

So I take it her dad is a neglectful father and husband... who has various affairs. And her mother is a pushover who just lets it happen.

Like telling someone they are crazy and to stop it is going to fix things. I mean, come on.

It's not just that Nanako doesn't tell Mariko to stop being crazy, it's that she doesn't seem to care at all (and that this whole not-eating thing is also crazy). It's like the super-dramatic blow-up at the end of episode 8 didn't happen at all.

In fact, I'm starting to notice a pattern of things being taken as huge deal getting resolved and then never mattering again. Remember how it was a huge deal that Nanako got into the sorority? It hasn't done much with that. Remember how Nanako was horrified to learn how her father left a wife and child to be with her and her mother? She's apparently cool with it now, even though she doesn't know that "brother" was that child and he doesn't care anymore now that his mother is dead.

I love the style with which this show is made and think it helps carry the high school melodrama really well, but I'm wondering if beneath it all really is just a sensationalist soap opera.

I want to give Mariko a hug, but then again I can't help but feel terrified of her. It's easy to say Nanako should have been more sympathetic or more understanding but that's because we know Mariko's side. When I imagine being in 16-year old Nanako's shoes who has an obsessive, possessive mentally unstable girl following you around...that's really scary.

Um....It's not to do with this episode specifically, but in shows like this, they're called lockers because they have locks, right? How do characters always gain access to each others lockers to bully them?

Oh, and with regards to this episode, those was some serious feelings of being victimized. Self-isolation, a non-committal method of self-harm that doesn't leave immediate physical external marks, lashing out at everyone as a defiant way of attracting attention...wait, that can both describe Mariko and Rei. Uh.

You actually make some pretty good points. I read and loved the manga, and so far I am enjoying this anime, but she should at least have some conflicting feelings about how her father left his wife and child to be with her and her mom. Like, that's some heavy stuff that would incite some pretty complicated emotions (especially for a teenager), but it hasn't really been addressed. I remember the manga being pretty nonchalant about the matter too, so I don't expect the anime to do anything with it. Wowzers.

In this episode she says she doesn't really care how her parents got together, she is just happy that she has parents that love her. Her parents made those decision, so I don't think she should be troubled by it.

now i understand, now i know... why mariko didn't want nanako to leave. it's because of trauma from her father leaving. right? that has to be at least a factor... GOD, this anime is so beautiful. kaoru's inner conflict with his own morality and having to watch people around him treat their lives as disposable... nanako's "kanpai" after that scene of apology that didn't even have to be expressed verbally speaks volumes. we get to see mariko's dad. may very well be a scumbag.

For a second I thought Rei was gonna body slam Miya after almost jumping from the balcony. Feeling bad for Mariko and her mom with a piece of shit cheating dad like that, hope this will be Mariko's turning point into becoming a good friend.

I can sympathize with Mariko because i used to be kinda like her as a teenager, but still i think her behavior to force Nanako to forgive her was abusive.

I relate to Kaoru quite a bit, from her understanding of poor health & clear grasp of how stupid these teenagers are.. playing with fire as if their bodies will implode otherwise.

Mariko, as per usual, continues her hysteria of narrow-mindedness & inability to deal with her predicament in an astute manner (only natural that it's like this though). Ungrateful to the precious things she's had from the beginning; unable to assess their value, craving for something she's never had.. consequently maiming the precious. Her tactic can only be called tactless, but it's very befitting of a teenager swimming in a pool of hormones.

Rei, on the other hand, is as dramatic as ever! I can only imagine Kaoru facepalming inside; it's axiomatic that she's simultaneously worrying restlessly, since teenagers like her pose a definite threat of permanently impairing their situations despite those "situations" in actuality holding little relevance.

The hospital room was really inconsistent throughout the episode.

First top-view: bed stand next to the bed with flowers on it, lower end of the bed ~1 1/2 tiles from the wall, upper end around the middle of the window, >3 1/2 tiles from the other wall.

The mother enters: upper end is now 1 tile away from wall, completely next to the window, bed stand disappeared, now there is a couch.

Nanako enters: bed stand is back again, lower end of bed ~4ish tiles from wall, completely next to the window, but now the couch is gone and there is some room divider now.

Man, this anime is just so complicated and beautiful at the same time! All the characters seem so real unlike most these days. That preview music is so good too, Haneda Kentaro is such a great composer. Nanako is so kind tho, she still forgave Mariko despite what she's done. I hope that Mariko will learn from her mistakes now.

Oh, Mariko's dad pulled up.

Situation got resolved quickly again and I loved Kaoru spitting facts.

The parallel of Mariko's and Rei's versus Kaoru's internal conflict was amazing and I can understand Nanako don't wanting to carry this badge of unforgiveness and judgement against Mariko (even though she deserved) and her parents (maybe they deserved) when she just feel the weight and not so much of a relief but she should still watch her back because I don't trust Mariko to stop being so possessive.

Miya is undeniably scary.

@viol3nty0uth Yeah, Mariko is emotionally manipulative and abusive tbh... Also... Is therapy just not an option for these kids? Clearly Asaka and Mariko need it...

Now, will Mariko be okay? This could've been resolved before, but Nanako became fearful of her obsessiveness.

Hopefully, things will be normal between them, and Mariko won't try to come between Nanako and Tomoko. Why can't all three of them hang out together? Because that's what it's going to take to "normalize" things.

Nanako was within her right to avoid Mariko, and she doesn't even know about Mariko messing up with her and Tomoko's friendship, there were enough reasons as is. It might be easy to feel sorry for Mariko as of now, but let's not forget she is the only one to blame for her misfortune, even her collapse was caused by her own actions. That's some pretty big red flags right there, and I hope they all can just talk to each other normally without resolving to backhanded techniques.

issues sure do run deep in this family... so Mariko had a neglectful father who cheated (seems like many times) on her mother to begin with. and then she seemed to be, uh, not quite liked by her peers at least in her previous school (where she was with Miya) because of her father's profession. yeah it's hard to grow up normal in circumstances like this. i sympathise with Mariko even though she did do creepy stuff, hopefully she can change for the better in some way. she already got tame after that incident so it's a start i guess. also if Nanako wanted to ignore Mariko, she should've told Mariko that... it's way better than just silent treatment cause it minimizes uncertainity. it's understandable that she didn't do that though. i wounder how their relationship will develop in future.

Miya is terrifying (esp to Rei) as always. hopefully her perspective, too, will be shown. why is she like this? would be interesting to watch.

Misaki was really quiet recently, surely she's plotting something after that interaction with Miya... would be unfortunate if she decided to pull smth during this period when Nanako ignored Mariko cause it would complicate the situation even more. well, it didn't happen. but she sure will do smth soon.
