I was pretty happy on how the series ended
so I don't see the point of an extra episode, and I think the manga ended on the spoiler note as well.

Can someone drop an info as to why is this a thing? Thanks.

This episode was originally planned to air on TV but the earthquake messed up the schedule and the episode got moved to the BD release.

Ohhhh, so it really is just some extra episodes that didn't get aired, I so thought this was a continuation of the series.

The last episode (episode 12) does indeed adapt the ending of the manga.

It could be possible the OVA was the planned episode 11 and the current episode 12 was planned to be 13

I wonder what episode 13 will be about, hopefully confirm something about this "Sakamoto is actually dying" thing because it's depressing me a lot.

Episode 2 wasn't skipped though. The show was only delayed by a week because of the earthquake, it's not like they went from episode 1 to 3 because of it. This is the unaired 13th episode.

They couldn't air episode 2 when they wanted to but it was probably well into production, so they just probably decided to make it an OVA instead of spending a week doing nothing, or so I assume. I doubt it would be a follow up episode since episode 12 adapted the ending of the manga.

"Director Shinji Takamatsu mentioned on his Twitter account that the thirteenth and final episode of Sakamoto desu ga? will not be able to air on television. This is due to news coverage of the Kumamoto earthquakes in April which caused the episodes to be delayed by one week since the second episode.

Takamatsu describes the news as "truly disappointing" because the staff had crafted the final episode specifically for television broadcast."

So it looks like it will be an actual 13th episode anime-original epilogue of sorts.
