| *Sigh* Just last chapter, I was defining the 'small overview' at the end as an「あとがき」, but it seems rather infeasible to call it that now, what with it being half the length of the entire chapter. In this case, I suppose it's acceptable to define it as 'a crucial part of the overall narrative'. This is going to make reviewing the series somewhat difficult, but I guess I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. Very informational chapter this time! Interesting to read about the massive amount of failures, discrepancies and inconsistencies and minor successes in regard to law reform. I figured it was messy, but I didn't think it was going to be that bad. As proof, the 'Small Overview' extended to almost half the length of the entire chapter just to explain 90% of the things that went right and 10% of the things that went wrong! Law reform is, unfortunately, excruciatingly slow, and when it does finally get around to it, things are likely to either go even more awry or still be in need of further reform. It's probably going to be a long time before the laws mentioned in the manga are properly reformed, properly inclusionary, and, most importantly, properly just. Law reform certainly isn't easy. I don't get a lot of my stuff done very well the first time, either. But it's important to lay a good foundation and then work on fixing the nooks and crannies. From the sounds of it, these laws have a decent foundation, but it's gonna require more work. It becomes even more difficult to reform laws when so many people have conflicting perspectives -- it becomes difficult to tell what is 'just' and what is 'right' at some point. Reform, like most things, is annoyingly gradual. However, unlike most things, in the best case scenario, the change is significant. Most things change gradually, in small ways, but the aim of reform is for things to change gradually in significant ways. Whether this actually ends up happening in society is a different story -- you see all these ACTs and revisions made to some laws, but at the end of the day, hardly anything has changed. Here's hoping that laws relating to trans* (not a footnote) people don't suffer the same fate. |
