"Death and Rebirth Death and Rebirth Death and Rebirth Death and Rebirth" as Micky gets owned, then says he'll be back for more

I love the fight songs, and that little staircase video they always play.

I'm totally with you on that. It makes me very curious. I also really like the scene at the end with Miki's sister.

Utena already beaten a kendo captain and a national level fencer, but we still dont know why she is good with sword

Miki's sister's explanation is a good twist

btw do they have to walk all the way to the top before each duel...

Utena is slowly making a lot of enemies. Miki could prove to be a formidable opponent.

Woww, I hate Anthy even more now.

I liked that part at the end with Miki's sister. Gives it a bit of context, I guess. She still doesn't have to be so mean to Miki though D:
I was hoping Miki'd just give up, but I guess not.

I loved this episode! The fluff episodes were nice, but I found myself missing the duels. This was the first episode where the shadow weren't creepy - on the contrary, they made me laugh.

I still don't have it in me to hate Anthy. Yeah, she was cheering for Utena when Mickey was fighting for her, but I think it's because she's happy with Utena, and doesn't want to leave her. Still, I feel bad for him.

The end part with his sister was adorable. I'm glad they added some backstory for him.

The scene with Miki's sister at the end was quite nice and it definitely changes how you look at Miki and interpret his actions. He seems like a rather obsessive character - first being obsessed with his sister's piano playing and now Anthy's.

Also, I am liking the soundtrack for this series. The song that plays when Utena is walking up the stairs to the arena has grown on me and I also like that the background song for each duel is different.

Finally, the student council president is an ass - I guess it runs in the family because his sister certainly has some major personality issues as well.

Missed that stair climbing part. I could watch that a hundred times and it'll always be awesome. Also liked that song during the duel.

Well, I think I'm pretty much in love with Utena now! She's the coolest character ever...I love how she condemned the system that leaves Anthy with no free will!
And if it wasn't for that, it would have been quite hard to choose a side in this duel!

Hahaha wow, he slept with Miki's sister, what a dick. I wasn't sure whether I should like Touga or not, but after that act I definitely don't.

And why are some of you disappointed that Anthy was cheering on Utena?
1. She is "engaged" to her
2. Utena is treating Anthy perfectly fine, and Anthy seems perfectly happy

But, is she really happy? Is she siding with Utena because she genuinely likes her or because it's her role as the "bride"? Maybe I missed it my first time around, but it's interesting how easily distracted Anthy is. Throughout this episode, and the episode before it depicts her as, well, very simple minded. Almost like a very young child who is very curious and isn't capable of her own real thoughts. Lacking individuality, I guess.

I'm starting to consider the idea that the "Rose Bride" and how Anthy acts is kind of a commentary on the princess/bride that is traditionally portrayed in these types of stories. Only capable of doing as told by her groom/prince, but not being capable of really caring for themselves or maybe not even wanting too.

Edit: I actually watched this episode over again tonight and have some thoughts about Miki here. I think he just finds something to obsess over in Anthy here, something to replace his sister who it's clear he is no longer as close to after the fiasco as children. He also glorifies his past, which is shown by how his sister is nowhere near as good at piano as he thought at the end of the episode. He also sort of paints what he wants to believe Anthy wants on her, making the assumption that he knows what she really wants. Despite this, I feel that he's right about her wanting to be free.

Lastly, the sense of style in this episode is amazing. The use of the apple at the Student Council meeting and how it divided after Miki's confrontation with Touga and Juri and just how the characters stand and the close ups used in the scene where Miki tells Utena and a very inattentive Anthy, to how the the siblings were painted as black in the flashback, to yet another great scene with the shadow girls (loved the pirate and treasure talk, gives you a great look at Miki's issues) this was just well directed/story boarded all around.

This series is amazing, if I didn't realize what a great experience I was in for my first time around I definitely realize it now. And, I'm sure I didn't even catch everything here.

After re-watching it, it's obvious Anthy manipulated Miki into dueling then purposely messed him up. Not sure of her motive here however. Also unsure of why Touga needed to be shirtless and posed on a bed for those scenes.

This is a pretty awesome/intriguing show so far.

Loving the shadow puppets each time with their cryptic foreshadowing, and the pirate metaphor for mickey was great. He's a pretty tragic figure so far. Also Anthy is definitely not who she seems...

Loving Utena as a character as well, and Togua's dandy sensibilities make him seem like a JoJo villain. Classic.

I thought I'd be sick of the song + stock footage before the duels by now but I love the song now and haven't skipped even it once. The spiral staircase + "spira miribalis" lyric are quite interesting...

This episode sheds some light on some of the set pieces that are being used in the show. The first time I saw them, I knew they were trying to tell me something, but I just couldn't tell what it was they wanted to tell me. We got a girl who dresses like a boy because she wants to be a prince, the shadow puppet, the ominous-sounding rose bride, letters from "The End of The World", the shadow puppets and a whole lot of other stuff being used as set pieces here.

A bit late now, but there's the whole metaphorical duels they have, where they have to slash the rose placed near their hearts to pieces to win the duel (and the rose bride). I might be looking too much into things, but if you want to win the rose bride, you have to cut someone else's rose; their own ambitions and whatnot. If you want to keep the rose bride, you have to keep screwing over other people. Every rose is coloured differently; even when Utena wins against Saionji her rose doesn't change colour.

A simplistic metaphor if I've ever seen one, but you gotta train yourself for all the bigger metaphors this show's got in store, I figure.

I don't think Anthy was really being mean during the duel. Utena is the first person who treated her like an individual of course she want's her to win. In addition it serves to show how Micky hasn't really considered Anthy's feelings. This of course seems to be a big flaw Micky has because he did the same thing to his sister. Instead of just asking the other character how they feel he projects his own assumptions onto them and believes it to be true.

I don't get why people are hating Anthy for rooting for Utena. I know that Mickey was fighting for her but Utena is one of the few people that knows that she is not just the rose bride and the only one that helped her on the prom of episode 3. Of course she would root for her.

I feel like Miki's angst is clouding his ability to think properly. Sure, dissolving the Student Council wouldn't be the right solution, but he could work something out with Utena to where Anthy could still be his "shining thing" without being engaged to him, right? Utena isn't really taking the whole engagement thing seriously, would never threaten/try to control Anthy, and seems to actively be encouraging their relationship. She's also probably the safest person for Anthy to be engaged to in the whole messed up system.

"The music room isn't just for playing the piano, you know," Miki's sister says. And then Miki walks in and Touga's got his shirt open. Did what I think happened in there actually happen? Daaaaamn.

I'm glad they showed the story from Miki's sister's point of view as well. Poor girl simply couldn't play the piano, so she gets banged on top of it instead.

Can Kiryuu get any creepier lol

Utena is reluctant to be friendly to Anthy because she doesn't understand why she is okay with the role she has to play, and she's afraid of accidentally compelling Anthy to do something weird. In short, she wants to keep Anthy safe because it's in her nature, but she doesn't understand her so she's keeping a safe distance. This should have been obvious to me from the first episode. Of course, to us, it's implied that Anthy does have some freedom, even if she has to obey her master above all, but I'd also not take any chances if I were Utena.

I still don't understand what Anthy's deal is but she's pretty entertaining. What a weirdo.

I guess Mickey was really just doing everything out of selfish reasons.

But seriously though, screw Touga. I wasn't exactly a fan before, but having sex with Miki's sister on Miki's piano, right before he arrives, and then acting all smug about it instantly puts him on my hate list.

As far as Miki's sister, she clearly wants attention from someone, maybe Miki himself.

Kinda sad what happened to Mickey's sister. Then again, she already admitted that she's not really good at piano, but rather She only did good because of him.

Lol, Kiryuu has his own ways with Mickey's sister. Thought she was just one of those lackey girls at first.

Fight was kinda fast! For someone who fences at National Level, you would think this would last a bit longer no?

Also, the 2nd battle music is "Spira Mirabilis Gekijou".

"You are just as cute as your sister" Come again?

Proceeds to imagine him in all kind of different positions on a bed. Okay then. Dont make it weirder than it is Miki.

I just cant take some of this serious anymore. Everytime the Worlds Shell Egg when they gather the student council, everytime the song and stair climbing when they are about to duel.

Best thing is still some of the student council members watching from afar with opera glasses.

"She wants me to win" "Go Utena Sama!" RIP. I laughed so hard.

Good to see Mikis Sisters POV at the end, expected something like it. Maybe he just felt lonely growing up distancing from his sister and he doesnt want to play alone?

I actually liked this episode, since it developed the characters and sort of developed the plot. I wonder why Miki was imagining the red-haired guy like that (whether it's just that he's bothered by his sister's sexuality or whether he's having some gay thoughts). It seems pretty obvious that there's something involving the world they live in being a constructed Matrix-like world or sheltered dome. Curious to see how long it will take to get answers on that.

No slaps for Anthy this episodeヾ(⌐■_■)ノ♪

Concluding the episode with Miki's sister's POV for context purposes was a nice addition. Fucking Touga on top of the piano her brother uses daily is still quite messed up tho.

Also, it's curious to see people getting mad at Anthy for cheering for Utena when it was more than obvious that Miki was more focused on his own feelings rather than hers. He lives in the past; projects assumptions without proofs and is more than willing to hurt his kind senpai in order to have Anthy playing the piano with him endlessly. He doesn't love Anthy, he loves the idea of her finally filling the void his sister left.

The last part where we see Miki's sister viewpoint of their past, changed the whole episode, what a nice twist. Miki keeps on chasing after his sister's phenomenal playing, while for the sister playing the piano means nothing. Shows how the siblings live in completely different worlds. And how meaningless Miki's searching for the "shining thing" is. Kind of a sad story...
