Pick your top 5 favorite anime series (not stand alone films)
Intrigued to see what is the most popular amongst UK fans.

Here's mine so far

1. Cowboy Bebop - Still my fave, i love the characters and the story which compliment each other so well, it's brilliantly written and directed throughout and then theres the awesome soundtrack. I like the fact that most episodes don't follow on from each other and that they are stand alone episodes which i feel works throughout the duration of the series. It may look a little dated now but i find it to be the best directed series i've seen and certainly the most cinematic. Anime in general doesn't seem to get much credit in directing, my course at uni hasn't even mentioned animation directing once despite the creative superiority it holds over live action. Theres always rumours of another series but i pray they don't bother, if they have to please make it a prequel to Spike and Vicious' days working together. I wouldn't mind a non canon movie again but i'd prefer to leave this amazing series alone.

2. Neon Genesis Evangelion - I love this series, so clever and well thought out to the point it can make you slightly crazy. I especially like the way it's written, most people moan about Shinji when infact it's the most realistic portrayal of a character in his situation. I like the fact it takes a psychological route towards the characters, theres no way a teenager can go through what Shinji does and not be fucked up unlike most series' in which kids take up enourmous tasks and are fine about it. You have to love Gendo too, because he's a proper bastard lol. I love the series end, but hate the movie, i won't go in to why but it just didn't follow the mood and feel of the series in my opinion and i still don't believe it really how Anno wanted it to end.

3. Full Metal Alchemist - I truly loved Full Metal Alchemist the entire way through, especially for a clever story in which its twists keep on coming to the very end. I also loved its neccasary brutality especially through the character Scar. I wasn't too happy with the movie ending but the series as a whole is quite brilliant, capturing the bond between brothers superbly. Currently reading the manga, which is very different.

4. Wolf'sRain - Only finished this a few months back and loved it. It's a fresh new idea and something i've never seen before. It's moving, well directed and beautifully animated. Another Yoko Kanno soundtrack that is so powerful and integral to why this anime works so well, the ending is truly epic and has so many different meanings.

5. Samurai Champloo - Another Watanabe series which isn't as consistant as Bebop but is still a remarkable achievment. Great blend of hip hop with samurai era Japan with some amazing stand alone episodes in a well animated and written series.

I'm currently 20 episodes in to Death Note and it didn't m ake the list because i havn't finished it yet but it is easily in the top 5 already. Depending on the outcome this is likely to make number 3, pushing Samurai Champloo out of the top 5.

I'll edit this later and add reasons. XD

1. Black Lagoon/Black Lagoon: Second Barrage - It's the same, so I classed it as one. Just awesome.

2. Fate/Stay Night - Love it.

3. Berserk - With a main character named Guts, who COULDN'T love this? XD

4. Star Ocean EX - Might be something to do with me being a fan of Star Ocean. Though I didn't find the anime as good as the game it was based on, I still think it's great.

5. Scrapped Princess - Similar to Star Ocean EX slightly.

These are likely to change once I've seen more. I'm probably forgetting some anime that should be on my list. XD

1. Gurren Lagann -- Just fantastic, a great show that doesn't take itself too seriously. Didn't even have me suspending my disbelief, I knew everything that happened was ridiculous, I just didn't care. Likeable characters, great story, and a lot of meaning behind it. If all children were made to watch this, we'd have one bright future ahead of us. <3

2. Ouran High School Host Club -- Another fun show and an interesting twist on the usual harem formula. One of those few anime that actually improve on the manga. Hilarious and even heart warming near the end.

3. Card Captor Sakura -- Epiiiiiiic. Watched this just last year and loved it. Also better than the original manga.

4. Lovely Complex -- Another funny one, with some of the most realistic relationships I've ever seen in anime. I think I'm just a sucker for anything happy and funny. o_o

5. Clannad -- It's not even finished airing yet, but it's already surpassed Air and Kanon in my eyes. Has had me laughing along with it some episodes, and literally crying my eyes out to others. (Episode 9 - Girly tears were shed)

I can't see many Brits having the same taste as me though, most I've met seem to prefer dead seriousness to that sense of fun that I like. xD

One VERY questionable one is her very "best" one. Just wrong. XD

But yes, she is a very strange girl. But I guess that's one reason why I love her. <3

EllieMusica: AHEM. I'm eccentric, if anything. My typing and excellent taste in anime suggest that if I'm retarded, you're ...Creationist-dumb!! =000

Identity: Don't be silly, they all rule. My gender is unimportant, good anime is good anime. You know you love a bit of Card Captor Sakura, it's so manly! xD

Calamity: Don't side with her! I'm totally normal. 8) And don't be dissing Gurren Lagann, I'll bet you're a closet fan. xD

How can I be a fan if I've never watched it? And if you're suggesting I have, but I'm pretending I haven't, then it doesn't say much for it if the fans love it so much, they pretend they don't. XD

I'd admit it if I liked it and I didn't side with anyone. I just found Kat's comment really funny. I wasn't expecting it. XD

ORIGHT , ORIGHT. 'NUFF FUCKING QUOTING!

Haha. As for my top five, I'm not sure if I can be bothered to add a massive reasons to each off them and I'm never EVER truly happy when I list of my tops.. So.. Yeah..

1) Planetes - I seriously <3 this, The characters are great, The concept is interesting and the animation and music are fantablous

2) BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad - I haven't even finished this series yet and I'm loving it. I will definitely be buying the manga once I'm finished with the animu.

3) Lovely Complex - I'm not too sure about this place for it; Its a fanstasticly brilliant show.. The animation wasn't the best but everything else was great. I'm currently reading the manga version as well and thats just as good.

4) ONE PIECE - YAYAYAYAY The best of the best. I love One Piece so much, All of Luffy's nakama are awesome with all distinct personalities and it has some of the best character designs ever! It looks especially kick ass in HD

5) Full Metal Alchemist - The Elric bros own and I love the story of them. I have nothing more to say on the matter...

Gunslinger Girls - If you haven't seen this series then you're officially missing out, beautiful art, superb characters, slick action and a thought-provoking premise, this series is anime done right.

Excel Saga - An undiluted shot of pure crazy randomness, one of the most bafflingly ridiculous things I've ever seen but enormousely entertaining for doing so.

Elfen Lied - If you can get past the somewhat gratuitous nudity and some of the most graphic violence ever to grace the anime world, EL is a moving piece of epic greatness, again, engaging characters, an intriguing storyline and good artwork however its the ability of the series to ruthlessly delve into the darkest side of human nature and emerge again without becoming pretentious or an angst ridden trainwreck that made this stand out for me.

Also, the OP is one of the most haunting songs I've heard.

Sailor Moon - This should fill me with shame, and I suspect people will be round to confiscate my Y Chromosome soon, however I love this series to bits, the arts dated and the sound qualitys rubbish, however its ability to make me care about its characters and draw me into what should be a silly magical girl show makes this better than a million Bleach's.

Neon Genesis Evangelion - A real rollercoaster of a series, comes SOO close to being an absolute masterpiece but falls apart under its own limited budget.
Enduring characters, a great post-apocalyptic theme and a hugely detailed and engrossing storyline - the end deserves all the controversy it receives however its still an immensely enjoyable series and one of the few series I find myself wanting to go back and rewatch.

Clannad - I don't mind addmiting that this series makes me cry both at happy and sad moments, and then there's Fuko-chan bless her little cotton socks she's so Kawaiiii~

Lucky Star - Love this series but i'm not sure why, it just puts me in a really good mood whenever i watch it.

School Rumble - Brilliant light hearted fun, Harima's a Legend XD

Monster - Excellent storyline & character development, This is one anime i think everyone should watch.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Sci-fi at its best, there wasn't one part of this series that i didn't enjoy. Motoko Kusanagi is one of the greatest female characters ever created IMO

Where to start.

1. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.

I think the Movies were great, first Gig was awesome, and 2nd Gig was exactly what I wanted from GitS, and anime as a whole. Fucking superb.

2. Cowboy Bebop.

An absolute classic, and an anime that'll never die. Real piece of genius, this one, perfect soundtrack and thoroughly entertaining from start to finish (movie included).

3. Neon Genesis Evangelion

NGE was the anime that started it all for me, and also was my first attempt at an all-night anime binge. Warning: Beer does not mix well with Pro-Plus, you pass out anyway, and wake up in agony.

4. Death Note

Makes it into the top 5 for being one of the most gripping anime I've seen, was always waiting for more episodes. Great watch.

5. Gunslinger Girl

Absolutely wonderful first season, focus on psychology of hander/girl relationships, how each handler and girl react differently to their scenario. Beautiful animation, beautiful soundtrack, great action sequences. Just a shame the second season looks like utter toss.

Honorable mentions for:

Ergo Proxy, Eureka 7, Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu, Blood+/Last Vampire, Elfen Lied & Black Lagoon. I hate choosing top 5s! <333

you're a fucking RIGHT triple O.G. mate. one of my best mates definitely. you're like a younger version of me, just more... sober.

cowboy bebop, black lagoon and gungrave are all quite similar in some aspects. i'm surprised black lagoon is in your top 5 since you've not seen it yet but i reckon once you have it'll rank higher.

understand you, yes? you got that, chinglish?!

top 5 for me. Well:

1. Full Metal Panic!(all series) - not everyone will agree with me, but i think its brilliant. In a way its because it was the series that really introduced me to anime(when i learnt what it was that is) and since then, i own all series, both novels, all the manga and i really just adore the story as a whole as well as Sagara and Kaname.
2. Code Geass - Again, absolutely amazing, story has been told brilliantly, enough action to keep you thinking wow, characters that are awesome(with the like of suzaku there for you to want to kill) And probably one of the highlights of 2007 for me. 24+25 being one hell of a cliffhanger, i just can't wait for the second series in April.
3. One Piece - Best Shonen Jump series you will probably find, Naruto and Bleach both pale in comparison to this series of epic win. It has this charm which just lures me back over and over again, and with the likes of Luffy and every other straw hat pirate, its one show i can't get enough of.
4. Kanon(2006) - I was unsure of this show at first glance of it, but after watching it through, it was one of the best shows i have ever seen. Its truly heart warming and all the characters are so real and believeable, all of which again have an undeniable charm to them, also Ayu and her "uguu" is brilliant.
5. Cowboy Bebop - This has to have a mention from me, it again is unbelieveably awesome. Brilliant Characters, brilliant story, but i think the main thing that it gets a mention from, and should be listened to even if you don't watch the series, is the music. Yoko Kanno truly shows why she is one of my favourite composers with this, this being undoubtedly the best soundtrack for a series i have ever heard, and can be listened to independantly as well. It just matches the show to the dot, and as jazz/blues are my favourite style of music, i listen to it daily really.

Other worthy mentions, Black Lagoon, Berserk, Clannad (ok its doing one heck of a job at the moment, i felt it doesn't match up to Kanon as well, but its undeniably a great show), Seirei no Moribito(guardian of the sacred spirit) and of course, not forgetting Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann(only seen 8 episodes, but still awesome)

In alphabetical order:

Ashita no Joe
The classic sports series. Any fan of sports or drama related anime must see this. It's certainly not the most inspirational story, and can sometimes get rather depressing, but it is great nonetheless and has inspired pretty much every sport manga since.

City Hunter
Ryo is the best character ever. Full stop.

Fullmetal Alchemist
I can't comment on the original manga, but this is one series I loved from start to finish. With a truly engaging story and cast of characters (even those who are only minor), FMA really made a huge impression on me as one of the all-time classics.

Lupin III
Everyone's favourite thief and friends have been a huge part of Japanese culture for years and years. Primarily known in Western culture for the Miyazaki film 'Castle of Cagliostro', the gang are still going strong after all these years, with ongoing manga series, and yearly OVA anime. Classic.

One Piece
With a great cast of characters, it's hard not to love One Piece. With constantly improving plotlines, it stands tall above all other shounen anime (I'm looking at you, Naruto). I may be a bit biased after fansubbing it for so long, though.

My own dubious attempt at ranking anime will no doubt be horrendous but alas, one must do what one must.*

1. Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu
No anime has ever made me laugh as much as FMP? Fumoffu has; by quite a long stretch to boot. Actually to put a finer point on it, FMP? Fumoffu is one of the funniest things, full stop, I have ever seen. The rugby episode and the hot baths episodes in particular still have me trembling with laughter just thinking about them. I love the unintended comedic genius of Sousuke and the interplay with Chidori.

2. Suzuka
Although not everyone's favourite romance/harem anime I thoroughly enjoyed it. I watched this as it was released by Lunar to be quite honest (one was a Lunar fanboy in a former life), although as I continued to watch me and my best chum Liam became utterly engrossed. We would discuss the latest episode on the bus to college, at the gym, anywhere really. I know we both came to tears at certain points in the series (him more than me, honest guv') as the plotline developed and Akitsuki made some piss poor decisions. I would be screaming at him for being a knob jockey one second and feeling sorry for him the very next. Very sad during the final episode. My first foray into the romantic anime world did not disappoint. Suzuka set me up for lifetime of ribbing by my mates for calling me a pansy. It was bloody worth it though.

P.s. when I discovered the manga I read all 170 odd chapters in one sitting... I think I have/had issues.

3.Gundam Seed
I have always had a dream of being a Gundam pilot. I often have irrational thoughts and dreams of discovering a Gundam and using it to fight crime or stop terrorism. It would be a tantalising offer, who could turn me down. Anyway, this series brought my dreams as close to reality as one can get... sitting in front of a computer... in the UK, Gundamless. I see a lot of myself in Kira, young, shy, devilishly handsome (fine, I'm a liar, just check the post your picture thread for the truth) and I thought the way the anime developed was top notch. I really enjoyed the animation and the look of the Gundam in particular. Overall a quality series which gave me a lot of pleasure. An honourable mention must go to Gundam Seed Destiny at this point. Although must people see it as some mutant bastard child of GS I couldnae give a monkey's. Gundam Seed had given me all the story I wanted, Destiny was just the cherry on the cake, bigger battles, more powerful mecha; basically more of the same just larger and flashier, "Look, my Gundam now has GOLD bits...". Aye the story wasn't much cop but one cannot have everything.

4. Yakitate!! Japan
Who would have thought bread could have been so interesting and funny? I wish I had solar hands! The story is enthralling, the reactions hilarious and the characters well defined. If you want a cheap, cheesy but genuinely funny anime; this is the kiddy.

5. Ouran High School Host Club
Funny as f00k. Ouran, to me, had the perfect blend of humour, style, drama, suspense, humour, cuteness and humour. Some episoders were bloody sad and had me in metaphorical floods of tears yet others had me on the floor laughing till the cows came home. Overall a very good watch.

Hmmm. Well I'll probably want to change this in the morning but as it stands. That's my five.

Edit: Corrected some glaring spelling mistakes

1 Rahxephon
While classed as a mecha show does a brilliant job of blending action, romance, humour and drama. Topped off with stunning visuals, beautiful music and a well put together plot. Could type for hours,

2 SDF Macross
Apart from the fact i wanted to be a Valkyrie pilot since i was 5 (saw it when it first came out), great characters, iconic mecha, and it shows love and war with warts and all.

3 Patlabor 2: The Movie
Nice to see that not all anime is mindless destruction. This is one of the best political thrillers in anime.

4 Cowboy Bebop - Knockin' on Heaven's Door
Condensed the essence of the series into 93 minutes of shear class

5 Dragon Half
WHY DIDN'T THEY MAKE MORE????? There is over 50 volumes of manga and only two episodes of one of the most whacked out anime i know.

Honourable mentions Macross Plus and Macross Zero for fluid mecha battles that are almost ballet. Moyashimon again why so short when there is so much to work with? and Twelve Kingdoms, why again can't they make the last chapter(s?).

1 Nodame Cantabile - She's uber-eccentric, she's a piano-playing prodigy, and she says gyabo all the time.
2 Blood+ - Just...WOW.
3 FullMetal Alchemist - See above.
4 One Piece - All the characters are stark raving bonkers and incredibly good at hitting things.
5 King of Bandit Jing - THE number one most laid back dude ever.

1 Kanon 06
I've never watched an anime that has made me cry for nearly almost episode. The art work is stunning, (it's by KyoAni duh.) and the story is just plain gorgeous. You get so attached to the characters straight from the off. I haven't watched an anime that has surpassed it as of yet.

2 Lucky Star
Konata is my double. It's ridiculous how much we're alike. Otakus FTW.
LS was just one big long LOOOOOL.

3 Cardcaptor Sakura
A classic and made by CLAMP, my idols. CCS has basically everything in it, it's a great series for EVERYONE. You've gotta love the characters, Syaoran <33 I rewatched this in Japanese and it totally owns it's english counterpart. Second movie made me 'Awww~' throughout.

4 Code Geass
Although I will admit, the main reason I love this show so much is because of Lulu/ Lelouch/Zero. What a hawt bishie. Anyway, this was like a mix between Gundam (which I hate) and Death Note (which I love). The characters are amazing, each episode left you gagging for me. Most episodes left me in shock or amazed by Lelouch's bishiness the fight scenes. Very clever, can't wait till season 2.

5 Air
My first sample of KyoAni and boy was it enough to get me hooked. Misuzu is moe to an extreme. Gorgeous and animations as always. Brilliant soundtrack also. Gao~

Hmmm...
1. Ouran High School Host Club
I'm not exactly a very girly girl, but this show is hilarious!!! I've watched it repeatedly and it always amuses me. I guess it's because the series only has a basic story line:

This means that the show can vary it's events. The wide range of characters helps as well. ^^
The only two let downs are probably the last few episodes...

2. Death Note
Amazingly well thought out. I love the portrayal of the characters, the plot and even the voices matched well with the characters! Hmmm, I guess the thing that let me down with this series was when
. This is one of the few series I have in my anime list that doesn't have an underlying touch of humour into it =D

3. Ghost Hunt
This anime seems to mix quite a few things with it... The humour in Mai's reactions to certain situations, the tension as each case takes unexpected twists, a nice amount of character development that helps you understand those important people and of course the fight over the man that most people seem to like *This being Shibuya*.

4. Gakuen Heaven
Not sure why this is one of my favuorites. It has quite abit of character development and reduced me and my friend to tears with it's humourous beginnings xD Although this seems to dwindle out as the anime progresses. Has a nice storyline to it as well. ^^

I can't think of which out of the anime I've watched is my fourth favourite so far... I'll add it in later and I'll probably make my reasons for choosing these better as well.

I can't see many Brits having the same taste as me though, most I've met seem to prefer dead seriousness to that sense of fun that I like. xD

thats coz your just plain retarded :P i sometimes doubt your even from earth

But I hate all the drama, sometimes I wish the whole anime could just be light heartyed and fum instead of serious =S BTW Ouran for life!!

There isn't a strict order to these. I don't have a definite number one.

1 - Hunter X Hunter - Everything that shounen should be but so seldom is. The action serves the plot rather than the reverse. Also, when the series finished I actually almost (*almost*) shed a single sorrowful tear because I was going to miss the characters. It's THAT good.

2 - Monster - One of those rare serious, gritty anime. No magic, no mechs, no psychic powers, no alternate dimensions. Intense, engrossing psychological thriller.

3 - Scrapped Princess - An interesting plot, a likable group of characters (except Raquel; she's completely bland), and just general winning charm. I actually liked it a lot more the second time I watched it.

4 - Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket - One of the few Gundams that is genuinely excellent. Unlike almost every other Gundam ever made, it's not about the mechs. It's more of a drama about the effects of war on people who aren't necessarily directly involved.

5 - Hmm, not sure. This spot is still open, I think. Once I finish it and see where it's all going, this slot might be taken by Higurashi no Naku Koro ni.
