Is it just me or does the relationship that nanoha and fate have by the end of this season seem a bit forced, i mean the the few interactions they had in the anime were of nanoha having a mostly one sided convo, trying to get fate to talk to her while fate is trying beat the magic out of her

they work together once before the mother starts throwing things at the both of them, thats before nanaoha overkills fate to sleep

when they get on the ship nanoha defends fate while the mother abuses her to the point fish eyes, a state the fate stays in until nanoha leaves to fight, fate wakes up and briefly meet up in the mothership where they share a overly but pleasing heartfelt moment then part ways, nanoha later saves her and takes her back to the ship where fate spends the whole time in jail without a visit from nanoha.

then the final meeting before it ends that can only be summed up by
Fate reluctantly calls out her name: "nanoha..... Nanoha...... NANOHA...... NANOHA!"
Nano replies as she cries tears of joy: "yes.... Yes..... YES..... YES!"
they exchange gifts and I now pronounce you long lost sisters (the type of relationship that makes you forget that you have other friends).

Either im not understanding something, im missing something or this is completly normal and im a silly person. Either way, it feels ever so strange.

Also nanoha says some shit about them being the same and fate having pretty eyes, but thats just headproblems. And why do I get the tiniest feeling that nanoha unconsciously thinks that fate is beneath her and they are not equals.

I had that feeling to buy I'm for the most part a cynical person. While I do think that Nanoha finally broke through to Fate, at least at the end, with her conviction, I wouldn't call them all an out friends.

But that's just me.

I watched the movie first and just finished season one for the first time today, so comparing the two, I think the series does well with developing their relationship.
It seems strange by normal standards, because we're used to the idea that a strong emotional connection is proportionate to the amount of time spent together. But I think the intense encounters and mutual understanding between the two more than make up for the lack of communication. It's a kind of subtle sentimentality which would work very well in a light/visual novel where emotions can be described in fine detail.

At first, it just seems that Nanoha is being a nice kid and trying to consider the circumstance of another girl her age. But then she takes on a personal interest in Fate as the girl with "kind eyes" who seems to be "lonely" (like she once was) and wants to reach out to her.

The so called fish eyes moment is an important characterization point for Fate since this is when she realizes that even if she loses her mother (which represents everything to her), there are still things that she might be able to live for. It's clearer in the movie version, but Nanoha is the one who gave her that hope, since Nanoha recognized her as an individual and human being.

If we think how little human interaction Fate has had (since she never had a friend), and that Alph is her familiar who owes her a debt of gratitude for being alive, then the unconditional kindness from a stranger like Nanoha might seem somewhat miraculous and special.

At the final showdown, Fate tells Precia that she is still willing to go against the world for her because she loves her as a mother. If Fate did not have that emotional support that was Nanoha, she might never have had the courage for that resolution to be decimated for the last time, or to even continue living after the inevitable rejection ;_;

Nanoha reached out to Fate many times, picking her up time and again, giving her a reason to fight, and move on throughout the entire season. Almost acting as an emotional crutch. In the end, I think Fate just wanted to reciprocate Nanoha's feelings and make up for how bad she was treating her. It's safe to say that they mean a lot to each other. And I hate to sound cheesy but they were truly able to touch each others souls. At least, that's how I see it.

You have convinced me that the state of the relationship between Fate and Nanoha by the end of end of the first season is just.... barely-
mostly with the two points about lack of human interaction and Nanoha pretty much being "on her side" all the time (strong emphasis on the "on her side")

On the other hand, if youre not counting the movie, Fates backstory is pretty weak because the TV version focuses more on Nanohas stalking tendencies and I personally think that ending was rather lukewarm..... without the movie.

But anyway, im convinced, not a good ending, but a good start to a beautiful relationship.

Please, the thought of two girls touching each others souls makes me feel all tingly inside.

Nice read. That's pretty much how I see it too.

It's pretty straightforward and honestly not too deep, but I think it works.

For both sides they saw another magical girl that were the same age as each other about, and there's probably some curiosity on how diffrently they ended up. They fought and eventually worked together against some rather life threatening situations together.

But the main thing is that the situations in the anime, especially on Nanoha's part, are naturally situations that they could have never foresaw due to their own lack of experience and age. If we look at Nanoha, she spends time blasting away at fairly generic enemies and that was straightforward, but when she encountered someone like Fate that actually had thoughts and feelings and stuff like, it seemed like something else. And as for the whole friends stuff, that's just really the only way Nanoha knew how to interact with people, as shown by her brief flashback with Alisa.

Fate on the other hand is worse off, because she really doesn't know how to interact with anyone besides her pet, and her mother. That really screws things up because the only interaction she has with anyone else is beating the crap out of them. With her mother rejecting her and eventually falling off, Fate's entire world is now gone, and now having to face reality, it's only natural its emotionally overwhelming.

Out of context, it looks really cheesy. But in context, I think it really goes along with young warriors facing a huge new world together and going through experiences far more intense then they've ever encountered, and often relationships develop faster in these cases.
