This weeks anime pick was from myself, because I totally stole Cav9's turn and we watched Memories that according to this site counts as 3 movies....JACKPOT, bonus credits for one movie. The trilogy is split into 3 little movies, Magnetic Rose, Stink Bomb, and Cannon Fodder.
Magnetic Rose: Directed by Kōji Morimoto. Script by Satoshi Kon, based on a story by Katsuhiro Otomo. Music by Yoko Kanno. Yup, thats right Tainted, your guy Kon did the script and your gal Kanno did the music. This mini movie as almost everyone picked up on was slightly like the movie Event Horizon in plot subtext. The animation was top rate, great music, and character/ships/equipment/enviroment designs were very pleasing to the eye. The story based in sci-fi/ horror gave good nessasary character backstory/development in a great presentation with excellent direction for the lengh of time this mini movie ran for. It ended solidly, so I really have no problems with Magnetic Rose in a whole.
Stink Bomb: Directed by Tensai Okamura. Script by Katsuhiro Otomo. Music by Jun Miyake. A more funny or comedic mini movie as opposed by the other two. Stink Bomb stole the show at this week's anime showing and I could see why. It was a good blend of comedy and action that keep the singular gag (guy not knowing he was the cause of everything) running fluidly through out the whole mini movie. Again I personally have no qualms with this mini movie.
Cannon Fodder: Written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo. Music by Hiroyuki Nagashima. The shortest of the mini movies was also worst, due to the fact I believe in my opinion that this entire short was an anti-war demonstration by Otomo. I mean I sat through a great sci-fi movie, a great action/comedy, and we end it off with a meaningful message of the redundacies of war...WHATEVER! The art design was pleasently different and of high animation standards, but the redundacies of war....Otomo I didn't come to watch this movie for your views, I came to be entertained.
All in all Otomo Katsuhiro's Memories, good stuff, watch it.

I'll start from best to worst

Stink Bomb - I loved this one the most mainly because it was so funny. Usually a lead character who is completely oblivious to the situation around him/her would annoy me but this time around it was a hilarious combination. You have to give the guy props for his dedication in getting that briefcase to Tokyo.

Magnetic Rose - I would've never known Kon or Kanno had a hand in this if it wasn't told to me. None of their trademarks stood out enough. I honestly don't remember the music much and the setup didn't strike me as Kon's. Then again, it's an adaptation so there's only so much influence he can have on the final product. Nonetheless it was good. I liked the almost Hollywood horror film presentation of it.

Cannon Fodder - I liked this one the least. They literally took up half the animation just loading the cannon and firing it once. Then when it ended I sat there wondering what was the point. I could see the intent when we discussed it afterwards but it doesn't excuse the tedium.

...even a saint needs a soldier to do the dirty work.

Insane is doing the same thing over and over the same way and expecting the outcome to change.
Lucky is doing so and it actually changing.
I'm not insane, I'm lucky.
