THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Is anyone subbing this? I was reduced to watching this episode from the original series in order to get a feel for what was going on, but it looks to be a remake that is almost identical to the first series in terms of dialogue and plot.

Of course the major difference is the updated animation, although there is still a somewhat retro feel to it (but still light years ahead of the original 1970s version). This may be in part because of the importance of the Yamato itself to the story, but it was actually kind of neat to see spaceships as a cross between WW2 bombers and submarines. The one significant change appeared to be the death scene for the elder Kodai. I wonder if the singing would have brought up too many painful memories of war propaganda in 1974?

Hopefully there will be a sub out soon to see if it does indeed keep close to the original story (and to push up the MAL numbers on who is watching it).

Please don't feed the trolls!

I think it was somehow pretty different from the original, but I really liked it . And the new chara designs is pretty great ;) . But it seems it' considered as OAV ? So it is not realeased on a weekly basis ? too bad T_T it may be one of the most interesting anime for this season for me .

Finally subs!

Really good start for retelling of all time classic anime series. My only complaint would be certain excessive weighlessness with CG - the space ships lack presence, so to speak.

Apart from that: all great.

The attention to detail to the presentation values is pretty nice. Everything so fresh and clean. The laser fighting in the first battle to the explosions was stylish and cool. Its hard to describe. Only wonky thing was perhaps the way the ship maneuver and fly (way too smooth and such for reality, I think?). I also liked how suspenseful and dire everything seemed. That destruction.

I couldn't get enough of that space map though, something about its presentation or even just the detail makes me want more of it in the future.

Characters leave a bit to be desired but Susumo Kodai is quite cool. Im assuming he is the main character, though what role would he play on the Yamato, captain?

Will keep watching. It feels like there is a touch of some retro aspect to the anime, perhaps in just the model designs or the music, but it still feels captivating and fresh for some reason, and really stylish. I want to actually see

Even better now that we've got the subs. It doesn't look like I can find the original anywhere online right now, I wanted to do a fresh comparison with the dialogue between the versions. Certainly the animation has been updated considerably, and it looked to me like the dialogue might have been slightly improved as well. However the naval terminology used ("the coast {atmosphere?} of Pluto" for example), gives me a bit of a giggle at times. The signalling by electric lantern in (presumably) morse code between the flagship and the last destroyer was also a little anachronistic. However considering what the main vehicle is going to be, who am I to quibble at an out of place signal lantern, at least they weren't using flags or semaphore signalmen in spacesuits...

It feels a little overdone since Space Battleship Yamato the movie is still a little too fresh. Plus I really don't see why Yutaka Izubuchi feels the need to redo Leiji Matsumoto's work at this juncture. I also noticed that Anno got credit for storyboarding. They must really be hard up for fresh ideas. I suppose they could just be trying to capture a new generation of children's minds away from the ecchi/moe industry domination. Unfortunately they've continued to leave the original giant plot holes of which the movie did a little better at trying to fill in. At least they could try to improve or revamp the original story. At this point I have very little anticipation of what they'll do next with this classic. I suppose if did succeed in introducing some younger minds to Leiji Matsumoto's work it'd be worth it. But of course he's still alive and creating anime so...

Decent 1st episode! Yamato was one of my very 1st childhood series, I'm glad I got to see it remade in modern animation and CG. I love Kodai's new voice, Ono Daisuke will do just perfect I trust him. So sad to see Kodai's older brother death. I got teary eyes when his crew started singing good-bye. Also the visitor from outer space, she was so beautiful as Kodai found her. My most favorite part from the whole series is yet to happen next episode, when Yamato is launched to space. I can't contain all the feelings when I see that again and again!

This opening episode was pretty good. And pretty f*cking bleak, too. The best part was the outstanding animation, and seeing some old school character designs work in a modern production. I think I'm really going to enjoy this.

I just noticed whit new overhauled series and soundtrack at least one of them, sounds the soundtracks of U-96 Very much. In good way i think. Anyone else noticed the same?

U-96 Soundtrack example. On one episode whit subspace ship you will notice the similarity in soundtracks.

Well that was fun. I was interested in this show for awhile now and decided to start watching it finally. I heard there were some changes with the addition of new characters to this remake.

Action and OST seems fine so far and the characters too. I think it might take me awhile to get used to them. That last scene from this episode looks iconic.

Can you watch this series without any knowledge of the franchise or do you need to watch something else beforehand? I'm thinking of a Gundam situation here.

This was way more military oriented than I expected. There are too many characters, therefore no focus on characters. Those old dudes are really unneeded IMO. I haven't seen the originals but "Yamato" seems like a really stupid idea if it's really a damn ship or a ship shaped spaceship. Seems like a nostalgia element. And one of the most important part, music, is really terrible or nonexistent. I mean while I'm not a fan of military shows, I can like some of them if they're well developed, like Battlestar Galactica or Gundam. Those shows had some pretty great music and great characters which is not the case here. I really hoped to like this since I'm fan of "space opera"s but I'm not even sure I can call this a proper space opera.

I'll give it a few more eps, hopefully it'll change my mind. If anyone thinks otherwise feel free to PM me.

Oh boy, it's only been a couple months that I've finished the original series, but damn this already gives me a nostalgic feeling!

Great first episode following the story pretty much on the letter and together with the impressive added action combined with the updated visuals it sure makes this epic story even more epic!

Looking forward to see what the series as a whole will tell us of a story and if there will be any differences to the original! Either way I'm looking forward to see what's next.

Started talking about 2199 in the original series' episode 1 thread, so I'm transplanting that conversation to here.

Having watched the remake first, it certainly is a dramatic comparison. Yuki is rather ugly, Captain Okita's voice is much more plain and younger-sounding, and the opening song's vocals were atrocious (although this is at least in part a problem with audio quality). None-the-less, while it lacks in visuals and audio, it may trump in areas in which the remake was lacking.

I watched the original a year ago and absolutely loved it, haven't seen 2199 yet, except for a few bits, which got me mad hype. You're in a bad situation watching the original after 2199 :)

But really, I'm shocked that you dislike the OP's vocals. I actually cried the first time I watched the OP, it evokes primal, visceral emotions in a way not much else I've seen does. The opening of Star Trek (2009) was a similar experience, in terms of having great effect with very little buildup.

I love the look of Leiji's women (or woman), too. I like the way it was adapted for 2199, but maybe a bit of the charm was lost.

The Imperial Japanese element is not really mentioned in this thread, but it's often brought up elsewhere. Being Filipino-Chinese American, I was initially skeptical, but now I love the Space Battleship Yamato as a symbol of the hope of redemption. I have a model of it [2199 version] on my desk.

Rei366 said:
@nDroae The 201x remake kept a touch of Matsumoto's style? Since this version was made under the son of the old producer (the man who came up with the rough basis that Matsumoto transformed into a winning series), I thought that they would have tried to "purge" Leiji Matsumoto's traces.

nDroae said:
It may be only my perception, but when I look at 2199's Yuki and Starsha, I feel like a touch of it is there. They look like the same characters adapted into a modern anime style, and I still feel a sense of regal magical romance about them that I don't get from other modern anime women. Again, maybe it's just my attachment to the characters. But the eyes especially feel so right.

https://www.google.com/search?q=starsha+iscandar&tbm=isch

On the other hand if any old fans think I'm crazy, I wouldn't object. I just got into this a year ago and I'm glad I can enjoy all its forms. (Even the live action movie, ha!)

Rei366 said:
@nDroae I see what you mean art-wise. I recognize "the character" I just saw today in Yamato. Though they certainly brushed a good portion of the original style away because I don't recognize "Leiji Matsumoto's trademark woman" except in the hairs. length.
Too bad considering Zero or Gun Frontier proved that it could still look good in 2000s digital drawings with only a bit of softening.

nDroae: @Rei366 True, those retain the original style far more.

Maybe part of me likes the novelty in 2199's blend of old and new :)

In the 2199 episode 1 thread I find this:

Since the first time I saw this remake, I did not comment here on MAL, I decided to review this anime series, also because I liked it the first time and reviewing it I can take some aspects and make better reflections than in the past. That said, I would say that with the beginning of series, it is more than satisfactory, there are no such big flaws that I have to complain except a little bit.

So we write the year 2199, the earth has spaceships with lasercannons, but no planetary or oribtal defense to destroy comets? Really?

And lasercannons without elevation (design fail?) that shoot lasers that act like homing missiles that fly curves.

And the way the ships maneuver in space looks weird. It's super fast, no inertia at all?

And the fancy new fighter jet didn't last long, huh. If all their equipment it like that, no wonder they lost so far.

Finally I'm exposing myself to the classic (although in the remade version). I skimmed through the 1st episode of the original (it's up on youtube) and it's almost the exact copy, although with minor differences.
Also I finally understood the homage to Yamato in Nadia! Pretty cool. And those elevators, undergroung moving sities and trains look waaay too much like evangelion :D I wonder if Eva took it from the original 1974 anime or the remake took it from Eva. Either way, cool setting, and I love the detail on all the displays and that kind of stuff. I hope the characters are good too, since the story is already captivating. Some mysterious girl (dead?) with what looks like a "key" to on old-school battleship which somehow is the only hope of Earth haha. I can also see how Anno took some elements of this setting and brought them over to Gunbuster to Evangelion (apocalyptic setting, a war with aliens and so on). I also wonder whether the name of the ship with the dead(?) girl means something significant, since Amaterasu is the shinto goddess of sun and universe.

P.S. I also wonder if TTGL was inspired by Yamato with all this "people driven underground by aliens" thing

Great start, i thought it would be similar to Ginga Densetsu with 2 warring human factions, so feel things might not be as fleshed out if all the story and coverage will be coming from one side. Regardless it looks really promising and i'm surprised to see humanity already on such a back foot, let's see how it goes.
