I had a thought today that i wanted to dicuss with all of you guys. I made a separate thread for it so it won't be buried in the general discussion thread and everyone can see it and share their opinion on the matter.

Alright, let's get right down to it.

After having thought about it for some time now, I began to think that the BDs came out the way they did because they didn't contain the normal amount of episodes a normal BD set would. They contained the runtime of the equivalent to 16 episodes (3 Double length episodes + 10 Normal length episodes).

Maybe Aniplex and ufotable thought that this much content is more than enough for a single cour BD?

I mean just look at F/Z's first BDs Box. It had the total runtime of 14 episodes (Double length Pilot + 12 Normal length episodes) , so they added the Einzbern Consultation Room Specials (34 minutes) which makes it, in total, still lower than UBW's BDs (actual episodes) total runtime.

If that was the case, then i can't help but feel optimistic about the second cour's BD Box.

It'll have the equivalent to 13 episodes (11 + The finale), so they'll have more time and money for extras.

What do you guys think?

Edit: I'll copy that thread in the UBW sub-forum so i can get others view on it too.

i see you paid a visit to my apartment building. welcome.

i have some mild confidence in the second cour bd's becaue there is less hour long episodes and the OST is gotten out of the way. but still i'm gonna hold my skepticism. there is not too much reason to put any real confidence into the second cour.

And i expect it to happen when HF and (hopefully) HA happen too.

Maybe you're right, and you probably are. But as long as there is a logical explanation, i won't just be pessimistic because... well, there hasn't been anything like this from ufo before.

I'd honestly say that being pessimistic is actually quite irrational in this case.

By that logic, if we're measuring value of BD by it's flat runtime instead of relative runtime compared to TV version, if there's a case where TV runtime is too long BD could have SHORTER runtime as long as it's close to the flat value and it would make it a good BD.

Miura is sticking true to his reputation(noob director whose only previous work was a complete trainwreck), there's nothing pessimistic about that.

I don't understand what you're trying to say TBH.

If you're saying that the BDs lack value because of Miura, then i think you're confusing value of the show with value of BD.

Those who paid money for it got their money's worth in runtime. That's a fact.

If I've missed your point then please make it clearer for me.

Your entire point is based in as long as BD gives X minutes of runtime it's k.

My point is that if there's a show with TV runtime longer than X it would make it ok to trim it down to X and call it a good BD.

Miura part... Eh, I'm too lazy to write all that on phone, I'll do it later.

It's not less content though, it's still more. It's a set of BDs with some gimmicks thrown in that's what a Box Set is.

Just because it's not something you can download for free doesn't mean it has less worth in the eyes of someone who bought the box set. Personally I'd be happier with something physical like a book.

It isn't. That's the point. One could release a BD with less content than on TV and argue that it's good with same argument you're using now (as long as BD runtime is same or longer as our previous BD, it's fair game). Which makes it less of a "proof it is good" argument and more of an "excuse" argument. No, it hasn't happened yet, but allowing an argument like that to pass would give it a precedent it needed to be an valid option in the first place.

Now, Miura.

But the director is the one calling the shots. Even if you could say that ufo hasn't done anything like this before, the fact is that Miura never gave us any reason to be optimistic. Let's see what we know about him.

1. He's a noob director
2. So far everything he does ends up as crap
3. He shows no signs of improving (this was supposed to be shown in BD, but as he made absolutely no fixes to it, we know that he considers it perfect)

To top it all he has this insane ability to make things ALMOST RIGHT, but with such precise small changes that then turn it into an abomination. Man's got talent, that's for sure.

I just don't see any reason why I'd be optimistic about anything with this guy on board.

Depending on what you'd define as "bad", it isn't. It's a decent battle royale with pretty light and good music (once you can hear it). What else could one ask in an anime? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Writing the first part of that sentence physically hurt me...

No, that's not what I'm claiming.

I'm saying that content costs money, and you got the maximum amount of content (=money spent on that content) that a BD Box can have.

I'm sure ufo would be happy to get more content in there, but that would cost them more money, jacking up the price of the set.

Please people, make your demands more reasonable.

@Hungry That never happened before for a reason, and it'll NEVER happen. That much is guaranteed.

If you're arguing that Miura should've used the time dedicated to the unnecessary scenes for more important ones, then that's a train I'm totally on board.

If you're arguing that he should've added more scenes by extending the runtime, then see above.

Miura is an amateur director, that much has been made obvious, and that's something he and ufo could and SHOULD be blamed on, but saying it automatically diminishes the value of the BDs is just... wrong. BDs value is a subjective thing, with the actual content amount being the only objective part about it.

From content amount POV(regardless of the quality of that content), they passed with flying colors.

Don't confuse the show's value with the BD's value.

To be more precise, it's about Saber, her spear (the literal one) and how if the spear breaks, the world breaks, and we all fall into Avalon.

No it is literally Merlin talking how Saber is the strongest person ever who has a sword that can kill PLANETARY threats(basically if planetary threat, excalibur goes supermode).

Oh and her lance is holding back reality from collapsing...The spear can unveil the world of men apart

Precisely. Cars run on dragons ^_^

Garden of Avalon, on one hand, finally gives a small reference to Angel Notes, which is always appreciated. On the other hand, we now have a spear that holds the world as we know it in place, and a immensely upgraded Excalibur.

Also, regarding the spear, Saber used it to stab Mordred in the middle of a bloody battlefield. And now it's with this Grey person, if I'm not wrong.
