Today was a double feature, both of my choosing. The first film watched was Toward the Terra. I originally picked this film because I loved the television series that came out in 2007 and that's probably what ruined it. Unfortunately for me, I couldn't get myself to quite enjoy the film. I kept drawing mental comparisons to the TV series whenever similar scenes would come up. I know it's unfair to compare 2 hours vs. 24 full episodes but I just couldn't help it. The story of Toward The Terra spans over many years so while the television series has the opportunity to give plenty of background, the movie can only glance over many details that would explain just what was going on. Chaosemperor and moose7100 seemed to like it somewhat though. cav9 on the other hand continued tradition and gave his audible sigh™ to the movie.

The second film presented was Mars of Destruction. Everytime I would read worst anime threads on MAL this OVA would often pop up. At only 20 minutes I figured what the hell, I'd give it a shot. So after watching and seeing how bad it was I had to bring it in for everyone else to see and critique. As expected this OVA got a thumbs down all around however there was some contention as to some other anime that may be even worse.

...even a saint needs a soldier to do the dirty work.

Thanks to Tainted Donut for Towards the Terra and to a lesser extent Mars of Destruction. For a movie released in 1980, remastered or not, the animimation was fantastic for the time. Released only a year after STAR WARS (meaning the anime was in post-production before anyone had seen Star Wars) taking this into account this was a true sci-fi spectacular. The story overtones which to me seemed to touch on Racism (Mu vs Human), controlled population (both in child replication and after the age of 14 childern must be forced to become a useful part of society, no waste or slackers), and Planet protection (only the most eligible / useful people are allowed on Earth which is in the process of recovery due to humans destructive tendacys hundreds of years ago). This story being told three decades before the Matrix movies showed a humanity so intent on survival they let go of free will and blindly follow a computer program and the rebels that rage against the machine to see the planet of their birth. I have not seen the 2007 tv anime and I most likely won't, because the true appeal of this movie (to me) vs the tv anime is a classic story that was told in decent detail more than three decades ago, not three years ago.
Mars of Destruction came out in 2005 and was based on Japan PS2 games called Hametsu no Marusu by Idea Factory. To me it wasn't the worst anime I've seen, because it was only 20 minutes and it didn't take it self seriously, I would consider this at the most a senior high school student's attempt at making an anime.
That's it from me....cue the free Beethoven music out of nowhere and dim the lights as I make my exit.
