this week we decided to have a Double feature, both movies are boarder line short. "Kakurenbo" ranges 25 minutes and "La Maison En Petits Cubes" at 12 minutes. "Kakurenbo" is a short movie about a town called O- to -k - yo where 7 kids meet to play hide and seek with Demons. Some believe the legend, others claim its a lie, and go there to prove people wrong. "kakurenbo," was just to obvious from the get go what was going to happen, i still like the ending of the movie, and the animation was excellent, other than that. it was an ok movie being that they couldnt enclose to much in a matter of 25 minutes. "La Maison En Petits Cubes" is a quite short film on a old man living in a water submerged town, interesting film with no dialog. Out of the two movies we watched I proffered "La Maison En Petits Cubes" because of its you unique look and attention to detail creative story telling. When a film has no dialog, you only have the visual aspects to rely on to tell the story. and for a 12 minute movie it did wonders. I nice calm moving piece about an old man who just seems to not want to let go. who could blame him, everything he loved, and lived for was in that town.

Wait a sec, weren't you saying before the film that it was confusing? I saw through it early on because of the beginning setup similar to the movie They Were 11. The ending wasn't surprising at all either given the way hide and go seek is played. Overall it wasn't a horrible show but there wasn't much there either. Just a plain game of hide and go seek except with a bunch of demons doing the chasing.

I agree with Les Maison En Petit Cubes. It was a much shorter film but still excellent in its presentation. Watching it on Sunday was actually my third time watching it and it was just as good as the first.

I stated that the film was confusing the first time i watched, but watching it again was good idea cause i notice it was just a chase film, might as well called it apocalypto and the reason i liked the ending was cause, they actually showed what happened to the kids, how they were using them as energy, reminded me of the matrix

Well while you both have vaild points on the movie Kakurenbo, I'll just put in what I think. It was a short story same as La Maison En Petits Cubes, both did win awards some more presitigous than others, but awards nonetheless. Kakurenbo won the following (from a source) "Kakurenbo premiered in March 2005 at the Tokyo International Anime Fair, where it won the award for Notable Entry in the General Category. In Korea, it received a Best Film Nomination at the Seoul Comics and Animation Festival. It then went on to win Best Short film at the Fantasia Festival in Montreal." I also thought the animation was top-notch, but while watching it for the third time with others, yeah the plot was preditible but give the movie some credit it was only 25 minutes and while Maison Cubes was only 12 minutes and had a much deeper meaning either movie in my opinion was not HORRIBLE as the creators of both movies had gotten their points across to the audience and that to me is the best part of any creative endeavor.

For CG, the animation was good but I couldn't help but think that they stuck with keeping fox masks on the characters the entire time so they could avoid having to draw faces and lips moving for the dialog.

Having an awards pedigree is nice but sometimes I do wonder like with Sky Crawlers we mentioned last week. I won't take away props for Kakurenbo's awards achievements but I guess what it really breaks down to in the end is how the movie made me feel by the time the credits roll. Usually with a film I'll feel an emotion. Even if it's horrible I'll at least feel something like anger or boredom. With Kakurenbo I started and left the film basically unchanged.

well said, i agree about everyting said, didnt think about the mask, but now that you mention it, it does seem a bit cheap. even tho it was a 25 minute movie, maybe they were limiting the cost of the overall production and foicused on what would make eye candy for the audience. I had no emotional attachment to this movie as well, i was taken on a ride where the jouney and the destination lead emotionally nowhere.

Alright Tainted, you have a point with the fox mask, but weren't the streampunk wooden cog demon designs pretty cool. But as in the case of awards and Sky Crawlers, I would rather watch 10 - 12 to 25 badly awarded anime than one 2 hour anime. With this statement I am in no way saying that Petites Cubes was bad just using the the length of the movie as an example and soon we will go Toward the Terra.

I've got no problems with the designs. When I mentioned Sky Crawlers I was meaning to point out just having awards can be a dubious distinction since it might not speak for the actual quality of the movie. In Kakurenbo's case I can see where a Best Picture award may come from since it's in a short film category. For Sky Crawlers having the same, not so much but hey, everyone has a different opinion.

You must have a high threshold for pain if you're willing to go through up to 25 bad short movies rather than one 2 hour film. By the time you make it through 25 you would have already surpassed the 2 hour mark by a long shot, even if all the films had the same run time as Petit Cubes.

Why mention Toward the Terra at the end there?
