Hey there! Jammer here! Hajime mashite!
I don't actually speak Japanese, but I know a few words.
Anyway, I've been watching ever since I was a kid.
I think my first anime would technically be Speed Racer. My Dad had watched it when he was a kid, and introduced it to me when I was 6 years old, back in 1994.
However, I feel like I didn't really get into things until I started watching DBZ in 1998.
Or, perhaps I really really got into things with Ghost in the Shell, which was my first anime film, back when I watched it in 1999. (Note: I was probably far too young at the time to be watching it, but I also didn't care, lol)
Or, perhaps you could say I really delved into the subculture and became a true otaku when I discovered fansubs on the internet. Before fansubs, I would watch everything English dubbed, yet, after fansubs now I watch almost everything in Japanese.
Unfortunately, I believe the first fansubbed show that I watched was Naruto, which I started back in 2003, about a year after it had started airing.
I don't actually like it very much, but still... because it was one of my first, it has a somewhat memorable place in my heart, even if everything starts to go downhill after the Chuunin Exams...
My favorite genre is probably either action or comedy. Or even shows which combine the two.
When it comes to action, particularly, seinen shows really tend to appeal to me, stuff like Gantz or JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
Also, I love classic action films and OVAs such as Akira or Cyber City OEDO 808. I've always thought they just ooze with a ton of style.
When it comes to comedy, I tend to think something like Crayon Shin Chan is fucking hilarious, but I can also go for stuff like Golden Boy or Lupin the Third.
I also tend to like classic shounen a lot more than modern shounen. Stuff with a comedic edge tends to be my favorite. Stuff like Tenchi Muyo, Yu Yu Hakusho, or Dragon Ball...
That's not to say they don't get serious from time to time, as well, but I typically don't like any shounen that takes itself completely serious.
However, I do like entirely serious stuff as well, especially if it's got a lot of production value.
Psychological stuff can be interesting, but I'm also pretty picky when it comes to them. I tend to prefer the Perfect Blue or Paranoia Agent flavor over of the End of Evangelion or Serial Experiments Lain flavor. However, I still enjoyed the latter two, just not as much as the former two. Maybe I'm not that into psychological stuff after all, and I'm just a big Satoshi Kon fan, haha. XD
In any case, my tastes tend to vary, and I enjoy a lot of different genres for different reasons. However, no matter the genre, I put a lot of stake in the quality of the art & animation. If a show has poor art, it gets a lot of points off from me. More-so than all of it's other aspects, to be honest.
Now, this introduction has went on for far too long, but... I hope this has allowed you all to understand my tastes a little better. :) |
