How closely are they related? I plan on watching genesis first then move to EVOL but I am wondering if they are sequels or standalone in the same universe.

EVOL is listed as the sequel, so that's a hint. While they aren't the closest related sequel, some things at the end are connected together. It's best to watch this first and then EVOL.
This "new era" they talk about is a load of shit. The age where pirates dream is over!? THE DREAMS OF MEN... NEVER END! AM I RIGHT?! — Marshall D. Teach

I can read so I know it's a sequel. However sequels with an entirely separate cast and plot just made me wonder.
