Funny how there's nobody saying "It's not okay to sexualize either". Not that it's what I think, but saying that it's perfectly fine to sexualize both male and female is kinda pushing it. I believe what anime lacks in this respect is moderation. Anyway I think Free! is at the regular KyoAni level of fanservice, so I don't really mind it.

Of course not. It's pretty hypocritical to think that men can have all the fan service they want but women can't or vice versa.I don't have a problem with the sexulization of either gender especially in fiction. Not really seeing how Free! is gay.Because it's a show about half naked guys on a swim team that are good friends and hang out together?Well of course they're half naked most guys are when they're swimming, and it's not unusual for friends to hang out together.Really unless you're a fujoshi looking for shipping material there isn't anything gay about this show. The fan service in Free! isn't anywhere near as bad as some ecchi anime were the women have unrealistically large boobs and it's constantly butts and boobs in your face.

So far Free! is a pretty decent show,it's not a masterpiece but it's enjoyable. It's not pure fan service it's actually pretty tame, the people claiming it's nothing but fan service have probably never even watched the show.It has some really likeable characters,it's funny and has some drama mixed in there too.Really it's just K-on! with boys but with a swim club instead of a music club.

Yeah, no. I just finished watching Btooom! today and I'm pretty sure there was more fan service in it (with only one, single, female MC) than there has been in Free. Free's honestly not that bad. Yeah, there's been some visual appeal here and there but it was either used for comedic purposes (aka Kou fangirling or the funny swimsuits) or was delivered in small doses. People are just more reactive when it's men because it's less common for men to be sexualized than women, so the impact is greater to the general audience.

I'm not sure why this thread is still going on. The answer seems pretty simple to me (and most people in here). *shrug* It bothers me how when there's just a little bit of male fan service out there it gets negative reactions and threads started to discuss it, when there is a fucking EXCESS of anime out there with boobs and panties (and sometimes cameltoes) thrown in your face that close to no one ever complains about. Just let everyone enjoy what they're watching, seriously.

Why do you think that?

I don't have any problem with this series and I am a guy. I think, people are paying too much attention to the fanservice aspect of it. For God's sake, it has awesome character, hilarious scenes and a nice plot. Also, there is Gou. She is so adorable and one of the best anime characters forever. People tend to pay attention to the negative aspect of a certain thing and forger about the positive ones. Not that it is a negative one but for some males it might be. Anyways, either enjoy this show or make a post about how you feel about it and forget. No need to remind the watchers everyday about how GAY it is (when it actually isn't that much. Mostly fanservice) I mean, people enjoy yuri vibe in harem anime so why can't they just accept the yaoi vibes as well?

Theres about 5 million shows aimed at men, why can't the homophobes complaining just ignore the handful of shows aimed at women and move on? Nobody is forcing anyone to watch it last time i checked.

My thoughts exactly. I just don't understand why they can't do that.

They can't do that because they are homophobes? Do you not even know the definition of a homophobe? Its a person who fears or hates homosexuality. They find free gay, so they hate on it. o-o Let people think whatever they want. Its not your place to criticize other peoples ideals. If it actually bothers you that much, simply ignore it. And anyways, that point is invalid. Why would a homophobe hate a show aimed at women? Women like men (most of the time), and the show is encouraging women to like men. Those so called "homophobes" aren't homophobes at all, use the correct term. Maybe if it was explained in more detail it would've made sense.

Yes. I should ignore racism and sexism as well because it bothers me and affects me. It's not my place to criticize people who perpetuate a discriminatory mindset and participate in voting in laws that directly hurt my livelihood (but do not affect them) by not allowing me to get married, vote, or make choices about my own body. Thanks for yet again telling me it's not my place to do something! It's like the history of groups discriminated against has never had that happen before.

Why would a homophobe hate a show aimed at women when actually you're conflating two different things? 1. People who make posts saying, 'this show is too gay, horrible' = homophobe because they're being averse to homosexual material; there is no such thing as 'too gay'. 2. Men who feel entitled to having the complete KyoAni oeuvre devoted to their demographic and thus hate this show for existing = people who hate this show for being aimed at women. The original poster equated the two because these two groups HEAVILY overlap. You were being deliberately obtuse with your response, though.

This is what actual Olympic swimmers look like:

Is it really that far removed from this?

And did you notice one other thing? They're actually wearing MORE in this anime than the real life men do.
There is no way you can make an anime about swimming and having the people dressed all the time. But even so, they still cover up the guys more than they'd have to.
Which is certainly not happening in anime that sexualises girls.

And objectification is more than just showing some flesh.
Girls in anime quite often are dumb, have hardly any unique personality, don't drive the plot forward and wear ridiculous, physically impossible clothes in the most stupid situations (like battling; when covering up would be the sensible thing to do).
"Objectification is reduction of a human being to a thing, an item, a something to posess." (source: OBJECTIFICATION AND... MEN? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hR9UMgOFeLw)
This is not really happening to the guys in Free. While there certainly is some fanservice, they don't have distorted bodies, they're dressed more than necessary and they drive the plot forward.

Calling Free gay is just stupid because there's nothing homosexual about it. There are no homosexual acts in the anime itself.
If you're turned on by guys in swimwear and you're a girl - then you're heterosexual (or bi). If you're turned on by guys in swimwear and you're a guy - you're homosexual (or bi). But the guys in swimwear by themselves are neither. Just like girls in bikinis aren't lesbian.
Whether or not you find this anime "gay" lies within yourself and has nothing to do with the show.

Comments from anime blogs bother me. Is it really wrong to sexualize males (as in show their abs or something) when shows featuring females with big boobs/loli/etc are rather mainstream?
it's okay to sexualize females
it's not okay to sexualize males

If I had that kind of body, I wouldn't mind if females and males sexualised me xD
I would probably show off my body too :P

Hahah, I agree. :DD
And I wonder why some guys bitch about men being sexualized in this show. Okay it's not right to sexualize anyone, but there's too many ecchi etc shows showing girls breasts and so on, so maybe we can just adore the men in this show. Well I don't think they're sexualized, tho. Just handsome men.
