So, I think it's safe to say that the series finale was a bit... divisive. One needs only to read a few pages of the episode 12 discussion to grasp that. I am curious, however - on which exactly side does everyone fall, and with what reasoning?

Perhaps you would've been more in favor of a Kirie or Momoe path, or simply disliked Yuuko as a character. Maybe you just couldn't accept the idea of a human/ghost relationship, and wanted a more "realistic" ending.

Perhaps you were just looking for something well-written, regardless of the outcome, and don't feel as though you got it.

Then again, maybe you were happy when Yuuko returned, but, deep down, wish they'd done it with more dignity (they could've at least dedicated more than 30 seconds, right?).

Or, on the other hand, perhaps you're completely satisfied with the ending as it was, and wouldn't change a thing.

Thus, in the interest of science, a poll.

I think it was quite befitting. The comeback was expected due to the whimsical nature of Yuuko.

Every story does not have to be a Greek tragedy to be good. A good ending doesn't mean it has to be sad.
bla bla bla
The endless debate between fans and haters. At one point, after spending a lot of time on MAL, you just realize it's totally pointless.

1st choice for me

"Im someone who hates sad endings, they get me down and l just cant help but feel bad for the people on the receiving end.

BUT WHAT DO I HATE EVEN MORE? ENDINGS THAT MAKE ABSOLUTELY NO FUCKING SENSE! The sad ending atleast was good, and ended the show without some giant cliffhangers or making people wonder just how in the hell its gonna work out.

Even though it was sad, it was needed. She had to be gone, shes a ghost with nothing. What, is she just gonna haunt that place for the rest of eternity just cuz? Even worse is how she came back.

This isnt mentioning how Niiya plays out in all this also. I mean whats he gonna do for the rest of his life? live the life of a hobo in the old building to stay with her? what he gonna do when hes a grown man and she still looks the same, whats he gonna do when his parents ask about all this, im sure their gonna want grandchildren sooner or later, same goes for Niiya?

Oh also, wtf is he gonna do when he gets thrown in the Effin loony bin? people already think theres something wrong with him, seeing how he talks to himself in public 24/7."

to lazy to type out something new, its what i put in the episode 12 thread

Loved the ending myself as I really dislike sad endings and can do without bittersweet ones as well.

I didn't have a preference between a happy or sad ending, I just didn't like the way they handled it.

If she had disappeared it would have been an awkward closure to their relationship because their relationship was going very well so really there was no reason to end it. Hence Yuuko came back.

Even before episode 12, I was kind of wondering why unfulfilled love wouldn't continue to bind her to the mortal world - after all, it's not altogether different than the earthly regrets that made her a ghost in the first place.

Of course, with that in mind, one can't help but wonder why she was disappearing at all. Did she really reach the precipice of some afterlife before bouncing back, or was she just trolling?

Some have called it a "new haunting," although that was only loosely illustrated.

A possibility. Although, to be fair, Yuuko seems perfectly capable of interacting with any physical object or person (it's never quite explained why nobody notices when she's wearing real clothes), and is apparently visible to anyone who "believes in her."

If she can indeed leave the school at the end, I suppose there's not a whole lot else holding her back. Plus, Teiichi will never have to pay full price for date night at the movie theater.

This could be a reversed effect "you can't see something you believe could't be there". Events just slips behind them: "Cup moved? Oh, looks like i was asleep for a moment!"
Cons: in e12 Momoe totally aware on Yuuko-Teiichi relationships, yet she can't see her.

I think the handling was "OK" it felt quite drawn out, and really I think having yuuko come back was just a half-assed attempt of "happy ending", by having her come back... they've just rendered the entire plot of the show to "get yuuko and teiichi together forever" to do that they had to get the full yuuko, and etc. Just flat out stupid.

Honestly, that last 5 mins left a bad taste in my mouth.

Personally I liked the happy ending as it was a good change of pace since it feels like the last 5 shows I watched all had sad ending.

True. I don't recall if they ever gave a better explanation, but, in Momoe's case, they seemed to be eschewing consistency in favor of comedy.

Don't assume people who would prefer a sad ending prefers sad endings in general. I myself would not mind a happy end. If you watch Clannad, then you should know I loved their ending very much. The reason I didn't like this happy end because it was forced. It wasn't good writing. They just decided to put the final 2 minutes there just to create a "love forever" ending. No I do not hate TeichiiXYuuko pairing. In fact I love them.

The final 2 minutes threw away all the emotional impact of the farewell scene. That scene was so perfectly bittersweet and the background music made me love it even more. It reminded me of Sweet November's ending.

True, a good ending doesn't mean it has to be sad. I can also say a good ending doesn't need to be a happy one either which is what the writers were thinking when they forced the last 2 minutes. It in fact has to be well developed and not just throw a scene out there just to make it into a happy end. The story was developing for an ending where Yuuko rests in peace. Therefore I was very disappointed when I hear Yuuko's voice after Keichii opened the box. But still, a great anime overall.

Considering that the last episode was wonderfully done. The whole last date preparing for her to disappear was reminiscent of a Key anime and as such was well implemented. Manly tears wanted to come out as she vanished, they didnt and it's just as well as the whole point of the episode got turned on it's head when all of a sudden Yuuko is back.

Personally I would have preferred her to have disappeared, it would have been a good ending for me in the regard that Teiichi could finally let go and move on like she wished him to do. A potential future romance with the very real Kirie got thrown completely out of the window.

The last episode was pretty shitty and cliche overall which is kind of shame because up to that point the second half of the anime had been very good at capturing the proper bittersweet emotions of this type of love story. I was really bored with the anime up to the point where Yuuko disappeared which made me think a little higher, even if I still think that scene could have had so much more emotional impact, of course that was all ruined when she came back and it solidified my hate for this episode.

Yuuko's murder has been solved, her two halves have been reconciled and she finally had someone love her for her to disappear after all of that would have been bittersweet not really sad. She was a ghost that got a bit of true happiness before going to her final rest, that ain't a greek tragedy that is actually pretty sweet and little sad. However, the anime had to pull a bitch move and ruin a lot of what was good about the second half of the series. So for me this ending was nothing short of a disaster.

However, in the end I still think the anime was decent just deeply flawed. The anime started terribly but improved with each episode until by the second half it had gotten to be very good but sadly that horrible ending had to come along and leave a very bitter taste on my tongue. Overall because of the terrible beginning and horrible last episode I can't call this anime good but I can say it's decent. And it was certainly more capable of getting it's emotions across than the completely boring Sankarea.

Personally guys I am a sucker for happy endings especially when there's romance involved. Although the ending couldve been handled better you have to note that the series has not ended so the animators had to do something to just make an ending. Im sure the ending the author makes will be perfect. Also don't overthink it about how they can live together its an anime and it really doesn't matter; heck in anime rules of life don't apply for all I know the dude could become a shaman and bring her back to life...point is WHO CARES? If you're looking for realistic watch a autobiography or live action.

I was thinking since she haunts him, she could go wherever he goes. What if, like Yukariko, Asa is still alive?

Yeah, the sad ending would be more realistic. At least Teiichi could start a real family in the future. However, the happy ending was also good. Just like what 'linchpin' mentioned: they can go to heaven together. They both wont have any heavy regrets of leaving one behind. I guess I have mixed feelings for the ending. All I know is, I hope there's a season 2 since she's back and all that. lol

From the very start it felt extremely obvious and cliche if she would disappear. But this anime approached it in a good way and then ofc, the moment when she disappeared. But then she unexpectedly(for me) came back. Though it was good.

Some may think that my reasoning is retarded.. But it feel good for me.
I guess that's what's important. :3

This.

I felt betrayed when Yuuko returned. Shit, I've even cried when she disappeared(and I'm male so I'm not usually cry :)). She's disappeared for me and this is mine canonic ending, since what author made in the end is unbelievable bullshit that was introduced for fanservice. I felt I'll give anime 10/10, but that bullshit ending made me change my mind and it was 9/10. They really should made an OVA and call it something like 'Yuuko return' so people who wanted positive ending just watched this and felt good. That way people who wanted negative ending doesn't felt like they've just ended another Mass Effect 3.

P.S. This is my first post on forums, i just felt that I needed to share with someone how I feel about that.

Nope, positive ending was there just because there would be 2nd season. They couldn't cut the ties just because of that. Maybe what they want is actually create another Bakemonogatari? I hope no.

Ok, so i need to vent.

This anime was the ONLY one to ever make me cry. And not just sobbing either, i fully broke down into tears and cried at multiple points during the story.

The ending turning out happy, was amazing. In my eyes, it was done flawlessly.

I hated the ending.

She had to disappear. As she said, ghosts aren't supposed to be in the world of the living. She reunited with her other side and accepted the fact she ended up being a sacrifice. Now, there's nothing to hold her back.

Loving Teiichi isn't a reason to come back. So all other people who died and moved on didn't love anyone?

Poor guy... Even if he stops loving her, he will be hauted for the rest of his life...
