Because I think it wouldn't hurt for the public to know this. I've already sent these to the group scanlating as well (in result, got scolded by my own group leader...>.<"), but since they decided to put it under moderation for who-knows-what-reason, I'll just post this around in other places as well then, since I think it's more important that people know what mistakes are there in the scanlation.
It's up to you guys if you want to believe me on these or not, but...just a note though, I'm the translator of both Eternal and WoaA. If you follow Tales series manga, you should be aware of both of those groups. Also, I've cleared both Milla and Jude side of the game, while no one in that group has ever played it as far as I've heard. The reason I'm saying this is because a couple of errors they made are actually error due to the context being in Jude side, but not Milla, so the manga doesn't portray it. For example, Jude only mentions of one professor, Prof. Faust, throughout the entire game. In that first chapter, I'm very sure that he only mentions that professor alone as well, but if you read the scanlation, the scanlator made it seems as though there are multiple professors, with "one of the professors" and "professors" and such. It's as though he's talking about different professor every time he mentioned it.
These are not all the mistakes I picked out. In fact, I let more than half of them slide because they're nothing that big and I'm lazy. There are many problems with the English as well, but I don't think I have the right to say that, taken that my English isn't all that good either. I won't say about the naming inconsistency as well.
Pg. 12
イフリートあまり張り切らぬように
バレてしまう
Heh, a bit too excited aren’t we, Ifrit?
You annihilated the gate.
>> First line is fine, but second one isn’t. A point is, they’re sneaking into the facility here. Milla is telling Efreet to keep it down “or else they (the soldiers) will find them”. ばれる means to “be exposed, as in letting the secret out”. In this case, it means that the soldiers might notice them.
Pg. 13
静かにして欲しいと頼んだつもりだったのだけど…
I’m trying to help you, but I need you to keep it down.
>> Milla help Jude? With what? She doesn’t help him with anything though. ~と頼んだつもり means she “intends to ask him to” very literally, which points back to the previous page where she said she won’t do any harm to him as long as he keeps quiet. She never says she’ll help him with anything. She’s just asking him that he keeps his voice down.
Pg. 14
咳は…
まあ大目にみよう
Well…
Let’s get this one slide.
>> Get what slide? All she’s saying is that she also wants him to keep down with his “coughing”, but she’ll just let him cough on for this time though. She wants him to keep quiet after all.
君は用が済んだなら早く帰るといい
You’ve exhausted your usefulness. It’d be best if you hurried home now.
>> I don’t get the first sentence. What do you mean by “exhausted your usefulness”? What usefulness? 君は用が済んだなら means something like “If you’re done with your business”, business in this case being coming down to pick up his paper, though.
Pg. 15
何故人は世界を破滅に向かわせる力を求めるのか…
黒匣(ジン)がなくとも生きていけるというのに
Humans can’t live without Jin…
Why then would they seek out a power that could send the world to ruin?
>> Your first sentence sends the context to the completely opposite direction though. なくとも means “even without”. I don’t know how you manage to jump to the sentence “Human can’t live without Jin”, when the Japanese is somewhere along the line of “People can still live their lives even without Jin, and yet” (putting it very literally) though.
Pg. 16
四大精霊(お前たち〕を従えた私に恐れるものはないだろう
So long as you’re all with me, you’ve got nothing to be afraid off.
>> While Undine was the one who told Milla not to be careless? You messed up the subject of the sentence though. The one who “got nothing to be afraid off” is actually Milla, not the spirits, and that’s because she’s in control of those four.
Pg. 18
やる気ならば仕方がない
I have no choice. I must press on.
>> The one who’s “pressing on” in this case is Agria though, not Milla. I mean, she’s the one intending to charge at Milla first. Milla is barely saying that if Agria wants to fight, then guess she has no choice but to fight her back.
Pg. 23
ここに本体はないようでし
黒匣(ジン)は…どこか別の場所か
Could be because this isn’t the main half of the facility.
Is the Jin located here or somewhere else?
>> 本体 in this case is actually referring to Jin though, not the facility. Just a note to you though, but よう in this case means “seems like”, not “because”. And you should take out “here or”, btw. It’s not here. Gnome already said it.
Pg. 24
あてがないんだ
教授が一緒ならここから出られたかもしれないけど
You don’t have a guide.
I’ve been here with my professor before, so I can probably figure the way out, so…
>> How did you know that he has been here before, when all he said is “if I’m with the professor, I might’ve been able to get out of here”? It’s true that Milla doesn’t have any real clue as to where she’s heading, but the same goes to Jude though, since I don’t think he has been in that facility before, consider the fact that the facility is a military facility, so it’s off-limit to civilians on normal circumstance.
Pg. 25
それにしても精霊の主と同じ名前なんて変わってるね
Wow. You even changed your name to match spirit lord’s, huh?
>> Don’t tell me that you can’t tell that 変わってる in this context actually means “weird, strange”, not “change”.
Pg. 26
教授 オルダ宮直々の依頼だって張り切ってたのにこんな…
I was pretty excited at first, what with this being a direct request from the order. But then this happened…
>> I don’t know how can you not see that the subject of this sentence is 教授 (professor), not Jude. Also, how come you can’t tell that オルダ宮 is actually a place’s name? I don’t think one needs to play the game to know that this is the name of a place, not “the order” as in katakana word though.
Pg. 27
聞こえないからって言いたい放題だな
Hey, the kid can’t hear us, might as well just say your fill now.
>> からって has this nuance of something like “Just because” though. Also, Efreet is saying this to Sylph as he’s talking all he wants right now because Jude can’t hear him.
Pg. 30
これが教授たちを…
This is what the professors were working on…
>> Take note of the を. While the verb is omitted, but I don’t think what he means is that they were working on it though (not to mention, since you haven’t played the game, so I won’t blame you on this, but Jude only mention one professor throughout the whole game iirc, so “professors”…is a no. Go figure out yourself what たち is supposed to mean then).
Pg. 34
お前もただでは済まないぞ!
You won’t get away! I will have my revenge!
>> LOL WHUT? What revenge? Agria’s mana is also being drained though. Also, don't retort Milla's character. IIRC, she never once wants revenge on anyone for real through the entire game. She's seriously all about her mission, so as far as I can tell, from playing both sides of the games already, she never even has that mind to think about taking revenge on anyone. It's always "whether it's blocking her from fulfilling her mission". The actual translation of that line is actually somewhere along the line of "You'll die as well!" (or so I translated) though.
Pg. 35
まさかこの状況で止める気…?
Could it be able to stop this energy?
>> 気 in this context means “intention” though. There’s no energy. Milla is trying to stop the spear even while her mana is being drained out of her.
Pg. 40
もしかして…この装置を止める気?
Is it possible that this energy can stop the machine?
>> Like above…and seriously, what energy are you talking about? -_-“
I won't say my translation is absolute, since I too made mistakes all the time. I piled up on mistakes myself in order to get to where I am now. Worst recently is probably the one in ToGf, which got Rena really angry at me for them as well, since they're stupid mistakes. It's perfectly up to you if you want to agree with me on anything...or even if you want to question anything to begin with. IMO, I have to say, I think the translator of this chapter is actually an amateur translator, looking from the mistakes he made, which tbh, is perfectly fine, seriously. Every translator starts off as that as well, so there's nothing wrong with it, but I think it's equally as important that the translator knows where he still needs to improve, and that the readers are aware of those mistakes.
And, to get back to the topic, I actually played the game already though, so if you want any specific spoiler, I can give you those. If you just want to know what will happen next, and don't mind if it's only the translation, my chapter 2 translation was already posted in MangaHelpers, so if you want to, you can read from there as well, and if there's any questions or criticism that you want me to clarify, just tell me.
PS. Sorry if I sound offensive sometimes though. I got too used to saying things in the mean way. -_-" |
