Well, nobody's perfect :D. She quits it, eventually, anyways. Although, she does seem to regain the habit in the second movie.
Anyway, I'm going to bed soon, so I can't just make a half-assed post about the most perfect woman in anime history. Tomorrow, I'll post something worthy of her.
Fine, I'm a day too late, so sue me. Let me tell you why I love Ayukawa. Be aware that there are anime/manga spoilers in my post, so if you haven't finished either, don't read it:
First of all, obviously, Ayukawa is a good looking and intelligent girl, the best combination you can possibly have. Ayukawa is also pretty mature for her age. In the beginning, she's 14/15, I believe, but she already has an adult allure to her, so people assume that she's 18/19 and that Kyosuke is her kid brother or something(this happened in the manga). Ayukawa isn't the typical annoying airhead immature anime girl. Also, she has that mystery aura around her. As the series goes on, Kyosuke tries to discover something new about her, mostly her past. Although, they could have revealed more of it. And, on a final note, gotta love her fashion sense. Not only she's naturally good looking, but she also knows how to dress.
Ayukawa certainly carries this series, for some reason, it's titled Kimagure Orange Road. She makes the show watchable. If the lead female was some generic female, then I don't think I'd even have bothered to watch this until the end.
I can't help but see her as a big fish in a small pond, though. Since the show is a light hearted episodic 80s romcom, a lot of potential gets untapped. From what we know, Ayukawa seems to be borderline perfect, not only she's good looking, mature and intelligent, but she's also musically inclined(understandable, since her parents are world famous classical musicians) and knows martial arts. Eh, as for the latter, I don't really understand why the author made her that way. I mean, sure apparently used to be a delinquent in her younger teens, but giving her the ability to kick the ass of guys bigger than her and being able to use guitar picks as shurikens is kinda pushing it, but whatever. I mean, we have a family of ESPers in this show, for crying out loud, so I don't think it's that fair to knock down Ayukawa for knowing martial arts.
I think the series kinda holds her down a bit. I would have liked to have known more about her delinquent past in a 5 episode OVA, a prequel movie or something like that. Sure, one of the novels deals with her past and a guy she was interested in, but they could've given us so much more, imo. And speaking of that, it' strange how there are no male suitors for Ayukawa other than Kyosuke. I'm not saying he should have had a rival like YGodai had in Maison Ikkoku, per example, but surely Kyosuke wasn't the only guy that didn't fear her, right? I mean, a girl like Ayukawa, despite her reputation, would always have several guys aiming for her. The only challenges to Kyosuke are Ayukawa's whimsical nature and his indecisiveness when it comes to
breaking up with Hikaru.
But anyway, Ayukawa is a great character, and it's a shame they don't make tsunderes like her anymore. Tsunderes nowadays are mostly annoying unsympathetic bitches that physically abuse their male interest every chance they get.
