Which branch did you do your time in and what did you do for the service. I was in the U.S. Navy and was a Mess Management Specialist.

--You guys always did eat good! Air Force always managed good field grub too. Prime rib in a mess tent. No kidding. One of my copter pilots snagged one still shrink wrapped and brought it home.

Well as they say, Ya can't spell wimp w/out mp...like you never heard that...Recommend you don't get out, yet. The civilian economy sucks. Do you have a PX/BX at Stewart? And do you utilize it? If so, go to a civilian supermarket. Sticker shock. We were spoiled living at Ft Dix w/ the PX/BX right next door at McGuire AB. We both retired, moved back to our house in Ohio, an HOLY CRAP BATMAN! our food bill tripled!!! If you can extend for a year, I would recommend it, at least wait until the next presidential election. If obama wins, I stay in, the economy will stay crappy, if he loses, the economy will get better. For the record, I have been looking for a job now going on 1.5 years. Lost my defense contractor job because of the stimulus bill. If you want further details, ask I'll tell you.

The good part of me being an mp is I have a few potential jobs already lined up. And tthe army is actually trying to cut back. They aren't letting people, at least mps re enlist. Unless I re class, which it would be nice to get holidays off (worked four out of five christmases in my army career) I'm just drained with being a soldier.

We get back from afghanistan and three months later we are working a 6-1 sometimes a 6-2 schedule. Its rough, but I like what I do.

Just don't see myself staying in the army.

USN Avionics Tech from 11/77 to 4/92. P-3 Orions and USS Constipation (CV-64 for the land-lubbers) for sea-duty. NAF El Centro and NAS NI for shore duty.

And we didn't always eat good. There was one time on the carrier I watched the MS's direct the hanger bay crew in pushing half a dozen pallets of potatoes over the side for being rotten. Skipper had been doing a tour of the hanger bay and caught a whiff of the closed boxes and on opening them nearly hurled. Seemed like it took forever to get that smell off the hanger bay. Even with the squadron paint shops using MEK, naphtha and half a dozen other toxic chemicals for the specialty paints they used on airplanes in the area.

You guys got to play with MEK, that's some good shit. Years ago, mixed that stuff with THF to make a sealer for the plastics industry. You didn't have to inhale much to get the high of a lifetime, oh, but the crash was hard!

MEK was the nice stuff. It was when they played around with the xylene and/or the thinner that was a mix of MEK, Xylene, and ethyl acetate (flashpoint of 24°F) that things got really fun during lunch hour since the aft mess deck line frequently looped up into Hanger Bay 2 where most of the airframes and paint shops were located since that had 2 elevator doors on opposite sides of the ship and provided a cross draft to keep the fumes down to a "tolerable" and "safe" level, when they were opened at the same time.
