What are some good anime series or Japanese live action films you've watched that many people might not have heard of?

I'd recommend Linda Linda Linda and Departures as far as live action goes. 'Linda' is about a high school band trying to get started and 'Departures' follows a married man who finds a new job ceremonially preparing dead bodies for cremation. Both are slightly strange as many Japanese films are, but thoroughly enjoyable, though in very different ways. The Taste of Tea is also fantastic and completely weird.

probably anime stuff from the 1990s that's out of print like:
Adventures of Mini-Goddess - glad I caught this on Netflix, volumes are really hard to track down
Magical Project S (Pretty Sammy TV series, not the OVAs or Sasami Club which are still available) - not on Netflix though
