| You're right. It is a portmanteau and shortening of tonari (next to / neighbor / adjacent) and kurashi (live / occupy / inhabit), the latter of which is often found as "gurashi" in compound words like hitorigurashi (living alone). I did offer a loose translation of "Adjacent Living" in my first release post of the series. |

Hmm, I have checked the link, and I never knew there were websites dedicated to re-releasing (or "re-[re-]releasing;" not sure how many "re-s" are in the site's description) fansubs by editing existing ones; that is a good idea for having more options in subtitled anime. I wonder what are "softsubs" and "hardsubs," though. Also, is "tonagura" a word used in normal speech, in special situations, or just in this series? |

Usually found in .avi and .mp4 files, although they certainly can be in .mkv or .ogm as well. Softsubs = subtitles included as a text stream, or as a sequence of images in the case of DVD/BD subs. They're mainly found in .ogm/.mkv files, and can be turned off, restyled (except for DVD/BD imagesubs), and easily extracted. First appeared in fansubs in 2005, and in R1DVD-rips in ~2002-03. Yeah, there are various re-release groups out there, as can be seen in the sidebar links on my site. Most of them just take subtitles from TV-rip releases (or old DVD-rips) and put them on better DVD/BD encodes. Relatively few of them actively edit existing subtitles beyond correcting minor spelling/grammar errors, if that. Most of them don't have Japanese abilities at their disposal, so they can't correct TL errors from the original subs. In the case of Tonagura!, I highly recommend my release over the old Ryoumi TV-rips you may have seen. Of course I'm biased in this, but I corrected numerous mistranslations, typos, and timing glitches, in addition to fixing up the awkward and overliteral editing job that Ryoumi did. Not to mention DVD-quality video, full softsub instead of full hardsub, and more readable styling. Technically it's only one re-, as I haven't done any re-re-releases by editing the subs of somebody else's re-release. At least not yet. |
| This is off-topic but I can't help but feel that this anime bares striking resemblences with Toradora!. First of, the name. となグラ！(Tonagura) and とらドラ！(Toradora) Then, the characters. Arisaka Hatsune and Aisaka Taiga (almost similar family names). Kagura Yuuji and Takasu Ryuuji (almost similar given names). Last of all, I'm not really sure about this, but doesn't Yuuji have similar EYES as Ryuuji? Tonagura's manga came before Toradora's light novel, and Tonagura's anime came before Toradora's anime. Could it be that Toradora's writer had references to this manga/anime? |

Hmm, I have actually seen only one episode of Toradora! before dropping it a long time ago, so I cannot really comment on the similarities. Loli high-schooler paired with a slanted-eyed son of an alcoholic did not exactly attract me back then. However, I was for a while confused between the two because of the titles that are extremely alike. I have recently watched an AMV of Toradora!, and I think it showed scenes from the final episode; it seemed cute as the protagonist was looking hard for the heroine, only to find her in a closet in school, about to cry. I think I might give it another shot some day. As for Tonagura!, it was good, but I wish there were a real two-girls-one-guy love triangle, like with Chihaya and Yuuji, instead of making it a lame "we-are-just-friends" kind of relationship. |
