Ok I was playing COD MW2 And i took a look at all my games and noticed about 90% (Excluding my Wii Games) have some form of violence in them. I own almost no rated E (for everyone) games. Does Violence in video games make them good?

Example:
Gears of War
Gears of War 2
CoD 4
CoD MW2
Bioshock
Bioshock 2
Resident Evil
Dead Space
Halo
Grand Theft Auto
Battlefield Bad Company
AND THE LIST GOES ON.........

I think that violent video games are just something we want to see because we could never act the scenarios out in real life. Out of my games, about 95% are M with violence and the only one excluded is madden(if you dont count tackling as violence). Personally, I love them, watching a head pop in gears to doing a grab move in AvP. If they decided to take violence out, we'd end up with a sport game or at the very least a puzzle game.

Do they need it to be good? No. Do most games (and especially the popular ones) have violence? Yes.

FPS are huge. RPGs generally have violence. Fighters obviously are about fighting.

But then you have musical games, puzzle games, racing games, sports games, etc. Plenty that are good.

Playing a FPS that uses paintball guns has never had the same appeal or success that all the ones with guns/lasers do.

Vilonce doesn't always equal good.

Manhunt had LOTS of it and it still sucked really.

While Harvest Moon has none and ti is great.

I dont think violence determines anything about how good a game is...

OK in my opinion a good game needs 2 things to become a top game.

1.Violence

Ok I know not all games need violence but the fact of the matters is if it has blood/violence chances are it will sell more than a game without blood/violence. I guess its because it lets us live our inner fastasy of being able to do stuff we couldnt do in real life without the psychological and emotional barriers.

2.Gameplay (including storyline)

Lets face it a game can be rated game N (no one should be allowed to play this game) and still fail completely. Gameplay is always half of the equation. Of course I still believe a game can still can make it off of gameplay alone. Take Kingdom Hearts for example. Not much violence there but its still surpasses Modern Warfare any day.

Violence doesn't make a game good nor bad.
A game doesn't need violence to be good, and vice versa.

I don't think they do. Take, for example, Tetris. One of the best selling games of all time, not a shread of violence.

Unless you consider making lines disappear a form of discrimination and violence towards shapes and lines, then yes, its a hate crime. >_>

Initially I thought "no surely they don't need violence " but after looking up at my game stack for the Xbox, every single one of them includes some form of violence... which made me think for awhile...

About the only non-violent games I have played on my 360 is UNO and Texas Hold-em. However I still stand by my initial thoughts, as I have played good games that do not include violence, just not on the 360. Good games such as Portal and Wii Sports :)

To the original poster, violence is in just about every game but it comes down to how it is incorporated into the gameplay mechanics which make the game good, not the simple fact that violence is included.
