I have seen the 2011 version which I know covers up until the 13th Chairman Election arc. Is it necessary to watch the 1999 version, which doesn't seem to cover the Chimera Ant arc anyways.

I‘ve watched all of HunterxHunter and don’t think it’s necessary to watch this, but I absolutely recommend doing so, cause it’s pretty good

It's not necessary to understanding the story, but personally i prefere it to the 2011 version, it goes more indepth with those first arcs which i think helps develope the characters, i also really like the darker tone it has overall

It is made completely obsolete by the 2011 adaptation. But it is better.

There's a unique, darker atmosphere to this version compared to 2011, and there are also certain scenes that are a lot better paced and executed in this. The comedy is also top tier in this version, with many exclusive filler additions becoming iconic in the series till this day. You will also notice that the 2011 adaptation completely skips over an important canon scene about a young Gon with Kite in the first episode of this and is overall faster paced from the start.

If you really don't want to watch this old version of HxH, I highly recommend you just watch some YouTube clips to see comparisons after you finish the 2011 version. Otherwise, I highly recommend watching this at least once as I found it really enjoyable, and it is jarring, but it's really interesting to see the differences between both versions.

Yes, absolutely, it is one of the best anime I have ever seen, it is more mature than the 2011 version, the animation style is pretty good, it was on the 90s, not the simple cat-like character draw from the 00s animes, I think it feels more darker because of the ambience, the colors used, and the OST is also pretty good, the only one downside of this adaptation is because from all OVA's only the greed island is not done by the same animation studio, this made me feel a little because is my favorite arc and I was expecting that same quality, but it was also a good animation just different. I have watched both 2011 and 1999, I love both but the 2011 feels more shonen to me

Not necessary. But very recommended. The first couple of episodes showed some contents that were inexplicably cut from 2011 edition, which will help understanding Gon's actions during the Chimera ant arc. The hunter's exam is also way more enjoyable, fleshed out and more gruesome.

Super overrated! I’d suggest watching only if you really love hxh. Just look up on YouTube for the well animated fight scenes.

Although the 2011 anime is undoubtedly the best adaptation of Hunter x Hunter and by far the best option to watch for the first time, the 1999 version is still worth watching if you want to. I watched it to relive my nostalgia for the world of Hunter x Hunter a few years after seeing the 2011 version. The 1999 version is also an excellent anime and has its strengths.

Its better than the reboot for the material it adapted. Not because the reboot isn't good, but because 1999 just has more personality as a show.
